Why don't they make afordable cars for lower income people?

Why doesn't the big 3 do this? I asked this question a month ago and got a lot of hate replies saying how it's impossible (and I know it isn't) and boom India does it first!

So my question stands why does the big 3 feel they need to sell something that cost half the price of an average home and loses values every year and has a lot of maintenance. Why would anyone buy an overpriced new car just to get them from point A to B?
Answer
Well we do have some cheaper cars here (like smart cars).

BUT...while smart cars are similar to the ones made in India (only more expensive) people have stopped buying them. Since gas prices have dropped no one wants them anymore and a lot of people are canceling their orders (on that $99 reservation thing on the website).

Basically, unless a ton of people are going to buy these cars, no one is going to make them, and the poorest families probably can't afford ANY type of new car. So until we make super cheap cars like those in India, it isn't going to work, and even if we did that I'm not sure they would be too popular in this country. Those types of cars just don't appeal to most Americans.
