How to find registered owner of a car with a VIN number?

askquestio

I sold my car years ago to a dealer and now I would like to buy it back. How do I find the name of owner and his address with a VIN number of the car? Can I find this info from DMV?

Answer
I used to sell cars in America. in OHIO.
NOT THE DMV.....At the county courthouse, a record is kept of EVERY owner, in sequence, of the same car. They would have the records of each title transfer, from owner to owner.
However, this may be a matter of public privacy... and only the police or a private detective could intervene.

If the last owner in your county moved to another state... I think you will be lost forever...gooood luck.

can i buy software that GIVES ME INFORMATION FOR CARS BY USING VIN NUMBER?

autopartsp

Answer
I seriously doubt it. To get an accurate answer go to a new dealer's parts counter and ask your question. The VIN # has very secure information on it. #1. With a VIN # You could walk into any dealership that sells that vehicle they could supply every bit of info on the car including key codes. You have to prove your the owner of a VIN before you get anything. The info is stored on a Ford, Chevrolet computer program. You don't find these dealer factory programs at Staples or Tiger Direct.

How do i get a license plate for my bicycle with an 80cc engine on it?

I live in California and I put an 80cc engine on my bike and I'm trying to make it street legal. All I need is a license plate and I have the receipts for the bike and the engine but I don't have a vin number so how do i register it? I called the dmv this morning and they were not taking calls and im impatient so dont tell me to call the dmv please. Thanks for any info you can give me.

Answer
You might not be able to register your bike because it is not in compliance with state and federal rules for safety and emissions. The was a time time when you could get a "special construction" designation for one off cars and bikes, but DMV stopped that practice in the 80's.

If the engine was smaller and you can still use the pedals as an alternative to the engine then it would come under the classification of "motorized bicycle" and "Are exempt from the motor vehicle financial responsibility, driver license, and moped plate requirements (VC §12804.9)." This is from the DMV.

i bought a car from a private seller. and now it wont start?

bo

i bought a car from a private seller yesterday. woke up this morning and it wont start. it will crank over but wont start. when i bought the car he told me that there was nothing wrong with it at all. well i called a repair shop they asked for the VIN number and they said that they checked the car the previous week for the same problem. is there anything i can do?

Answer
To clear the mud on some of the answers... used vehicle sales (especially private party) are ALWAYS deemed "as-is" unless noted in writing. Even if "as-is" is not written on the bill of sale, it's still as-is.

You "could" take the seller to court, but you would lose. You have to prove that they knew of an issue and withheld that info, and the vehicle having the issue earlier is not proof.

I used to have a 2001 mustang and wrecked it and it was given a salvage title. I have been trying to locate it. I know it is back on the road and I am sure it is still in NC just wondering if there was any way to find it without knowing the VIN number? Thanks for all the help

Answer

What type research should I carry before buying a new car or a second hand car?

I want to buy a car - old or new it doesn't matter at all. All I want to know that how should I judge the right vehicle which could rather be a value for money to me. Please share tips related to what kind of things I should do a due diligence on before buying a car.

Answer
Read Consumers Report Car Buying issue, excellent info on new and used cars. If u r going for a used car, subscribe to Carfax, there u get info on where the car came from, if ever in a reported collision, mileage, how many owners.etc. Cost is reasonable for 30 days of unlimited usage, all u need is the vin number of the vehicle u r interested in. A new car is ur decision in taste and preference, but Consumers Report test drives all vehicles and u get their data. They also have the frequency of repairs and problems with used cars. Good luck shopping.
