How much does it cost to start car insurance?

I am 19 and a new driver. I want to buy a car but have to have insurance to even get the car off the lot. I got my quote from progressive. Do I have to pay for anything else besides that quote to start off or just the quote every month and that is it?

Answer
The good news is that you got a quote. Did you get more than one, because each car insurance company charges different rates based on the type of driver you are. Young drivers always end up paying a lot of money. The next step once you've picked a company is to talk to them about what type of insurance you need and then how you'll pay for it. Some insurance can be paid monthly but it is more common to pay it every 6 months or 1 year. If ever in doubt get in contact with your insurance company.

What is the best car insurance company in North Carolina?

Eric

Hi. So I recently moved from New England to North Carolina. I have my 2002 Toyota Camry. It was my Dad's and is still under his name. However, I want to get the title in my name hopefully by early 2014. That means paying for insurance too. I figure I'm going to have to do this soon, might as well do it now and learn more responsibility.

My parents are paying for my car and their cars under MetLife. (Yes, the one with the Snoopy logo). They are paying about the same plan they did in Massachusetts. I know North Carolina has more competition in pricing and I want to shop around for a decent plan that gives me what I need but for a better price. My Mom is hysterical and doesn't want me to go anywhere else because she think NC insurance is crap.

I like that MetLife gives me what I need but I'm not paying more than I have to in insurance. Sorry Mom.

So my question is. What is the best car insurance company in North Carolina? Any suggestions. I would like a company that offers affordable plans but also is a reliable company when I need them. Please NO cheapo discount insurance.

Here are my only two liabilities in my driving history:
1. Got into a minor car accident in October of 2011. Just a paint smear with another car. Nobody was hurt and neither car got in worse performance condition.
2. Got a seatbelt violation ticket in January 2013. (It was actually for speeding but the cop went easy probably because he saw I was wearing a suit. I was on my way to a family memorial service near the South Boston area.)

Any experiences?

I mean, what is my Mom worried about? I never hear in the news about people dying because they have NC car insurance. I know there is cut rate (bad) insurance out there because of competition. But there's got to be something better in NC than paying a Taxachuetts MetLife plan. (Sorry BayStaters, but you know it's true)

Thank you!

Answer
There is no such company. The best insurance company for one person may be the worst for the next person. Simply get several quotes and then choose the best quote for you.
You are just wasting your time asking this question. It cannot be answered.

Happy shopping

Why do people act like they do when they get hit in a car accident?

I can understand frustration over someone hitting your brand new car, etc. But recently my friend had his mother hospitalized due to mitral valve dysfunction, it is getting harder for her to breathe and the doctor told him he considered it the most painful way to die. Anyways I was visiting his mother and my friend and his brother were staying the night at the hospital because she doesn't have much time, we decided to get dinner and return, we picked it up and right as he was backing up, he hit some guys car. The man walked out yelling, cursing, saying it was a $4,000 paint job, etc. When we got out to see the damage, it was literally a scuff you could buff out. He was being EXTREMELY rude, cursing, and taking pictures like mad. He got my friends insurance and said that he was going to pay big time for it. A few days later, some body shop quoted the damage at $1,800.

The insurance company covers up to $1000 of the damage, he has to pay the rest out of pocket. Since his mom is dying, he's paying more on health insurance to keep her alive a little longer. He can't afford $800. I simply gave him the money. And that was that. But the amount of stress that it put on him was so much on top of his mother dying he had to deal with a total asshat.

My question is, honestly, why do people value these possessions so much? I'm not trying to be a hippie or philosopher, but it's not like they're going to be buried in the damn car. Why is it such a big deal if someone simply "tapped" a bumper? I don't care how much your paint job cost, or how much the metallic flakes cost. But when someone is going through something and explain it to you with tears in their eyes, the car is still worth more than compassion? Is a car really that effing important? It was truly one of the saddest things I saw the way that man tread my friend. I only hope karma doesn't bite him back, as all drivers who complain about very minor things. After seeing this, If anyone ever does minor damage on my car (2012 Mustang) I wont give a rat's ass and let them go. Because it's just a damn car. Unless your that desperate to need a nice looking car to impress people, it really doesn't matter much.

Anyways I simply wanted to hear peoples opinions on this. I can almost guarantee that no one here would tolerate minor damage on their car (not a major collision, that's something else). True that people can make up stories and stuff, but sometimes you just see it in them you know, that they're truthful. I guess though people value a car more than a humble person these days.

Answer
Well, since you've provided the perspective of your friend's mom's situation, and from what I can tell this was in a hospital parking lot, isn't it also possible that the guy also had some terrible medical news and your friend hitting his car was the last thing he needed that day?
If you don't know then you can't judge.
Of course, it's also entirely possible that the guy was just a shallow materialistic jerk as you say.
What actually happened there was indeed some karma...and now you have learned something ("in the grand scheme of things material things don't matter) and can act accordingly should this happen to you.
If it makes any difference, I've been rear ended three times (and caused my own share of accidents on icy roads) and I wouldn't say I reacted well any time because it's scary as hell (if you're in the car as I was) and annoying when that happens. However, I do understand that accidents happen so twice I just let it go as there was minor damage, but the one time I was rear ended so hard the other vehicle was totalled, well, I ended up feeling sorry for the guy. Stuff happens.

Is it lawful for Obama to tax health insurance benefits unless employees are union?

Seem to me that Obama is paying back the Unions for GM
Correct, but it is still a benefit and has a monetary value. There are many other union benfits that cost companies a fortune.

Unionsâ Health Benefits May Avoid Tax Under Obama Proposal

There's a reason the Obama health care plan is being rushed through Congress this summer -- because the American people would likely never support it if given time to absorb and understand such fine print," as the unions being exempt from any tax increase on any health care benefits provided by their boss. "If the union carve-out isn't sufficient to excite public anger, wait till you hear about the version of the Obama plan prepared by Senator Edward Kennedy, which would specifically exempt Members of Congress from many of its provisions. As the US Office of Personnel Management notes, Members of Congress 'enjoy the widest selection of health plans in the country.' According to page 114 of the Kennedy bill, a similar array of choices would not be available to other Americans in the future. Instead, they would be shunted into health insurance plans under the straightjacket of whatever the government decides is a 'basic' plan."
Union workers would be exempt from the Democrat health care tax. So guess what that says to people? Hey, buddy, if you join our union, your health care won't be taxed like everybody else's. "Critics of the Baucus proposal to exempt unions from a health care benefits tax said the exclusion could be used to lure into unions employees who are anxious to avoid the benefits tax." Yes, exactly right. So you continue to throw a bone to the unions of the workers' paradise. Obama is right out of Das Kapital? Obama looks at profit as just surplus revenue that he can grab. The private sector is just an endless pile of money. He can go get it, use it for whatever he wants. I have also said that if you want to understand Obama's economic policy, understand just one thing, and that is he considers his mission to be to return the nation's wealth to its, quote, unquote, rightful owners.

Now, if you're familiar with Marx and Das Kapital, the rightful owners of the nation's wealth are the poor and workers, the middle class who are exploited and used and taken advantage of and on whose backs other people get rich. Profit is considered evil. Profit is considered something that's unequal. It's unfair to have a profit and to make one.

Look where Unions got G.M. Labor unions are disastrous for American car companies. Labor unions, along with the government regulations, will destroy this country's free capitalism, or what is left of free capitalism. When you restrict what a company can do, and couple that with labor unions demanding outrageous amounts of money for little to no work, you get a bankrupt business. When you bite the hand that feeds you enough, you stop getting fed!
