I'm very sorry about your loss. It's made even tougher when you just can't learn anything about the circumstances.

Can you find websites/phone numbers for local police stations? Do you know the name of anyone your friend was visiting with--can you get information through them? What about local (in Sydney) American (or whatever nationality you are) consulates/embassies--even if they have no information, perhaps they can direct you to someone who may.

Or...what about your friend's family? If they don't want to talk about it just now, simply thank them and let it be.

Ive always thought it was cool when i saw that one car every 3 years that someone brought overseas from britain (or japan). So sometime in my life, hopefully the near future, i want to get a car shipped over to america.

But, first off, i know there are laws concerning safety that i need to sort out first. I live in missouri. where can i find these laws? i heard that its not legal to have certain cars even shipped over here, i dont know if that's true or not...

secondly, I am assuming that a car from britain has similar safety features as a car from america, especially if they are of the same brand. what safety standards do i need to adhere to? i have heard about airbags and thicker windows, so far, but i dont know what else is necessary.

Thirdly, what would this limit me from doing? For example, i wouldnt be able to go through a drive thru anymore (some people might consider that a good thing though...) what else would i miss out on?

Lastly, what car should i import over? I want something that typically isn't seen in America. I thought about an older Nissan Skyline, but im not into the "tuner" scene, and they are expensive as it is.

I have some promising news :) ... and I have some disheartening news :(

First, the stuff that'll benefit you the most.

This website lists every car currently allowed to be imported to the USA from other car markets. What you NEED to know about this list is that simply being on the list does NOT mean you can legally drive it in the USA. This list includes every foreign-market car that has been shown to be modifiable to meet US standards. The modification process is long, slow, and rediculously expensive :( To the tune of tens of thousands fo dollars. And that's AFTER you buy the car and ship it. I was assigned in to an airbase in Japan for 4 years..I found a Porsche 968 I wanted to buy and bring back with me. They sold the 968 in the US as well but that wasn't good enough to make it importable. You'll notice it's not on the list. Simply being a similar car, even if they're built exactly the same, isn't good enough. you need to prove to Uncle Sam that it's acceptable...

The good news is that cars over 25 years old don't fall under these guidelines and are MUCH easier to import.

If you want something that will REALLY turn some heads and you don't mind muscle cars, ship a Chrysler Valiant from Australia. Chrysler's parent company, GM, made certain hot muscle cars in Australia that weren't sold here but are now old enough to be legally importable. They never fail to turn heads and in most cases, there may only be one or two of them in the entire country, yet they're still GM cars so working on them isn't that big a deal! Also, the old european luxury cars are always an amusing alternative!

You won't be missing out on ANYTHING by switching to right-hand-drive. It's easy to mix the turn-signal lever and windshield wiper lever up as they're backwards on right-hand-drive cars, but aside from shifting gears with your other hand, everything else is the same :) If you want a right-hand-drive car to practice in, buy an old mail car here in the USA. Those are all right-hand-drive because the driver needs to be able to reach mailboxes.

How is the flood situation in Australia?

Q. Hi guys, I'm not Australian, I'm from Toronto, but I am wondering how things are going in the flood-affected region of Australia, Is the water level going down yet? Has the clean up process begun yet, or is it still in the rescue and relocate people stage? I tried googling it, but i think most of the information is out of date. Do you know if any donations are needed, or are the expenses mostly going to be covered by the Australian government?

I'm in Brisbane, but thankfully got out of it with nothing more than a few things that are / were an annoyance - it was raining, quite often in copious which meant constantly wet clothes and just yucky weather which makes people grumpy. I'm quite some way from the river and on higher ground so grumpy on occasion yes, but in the grand scheme of things I've lost nothing, still got a home and Ã'm a heck of a lot luckier than a lot of people.

The water level is going down gradually. In some places it is gone totally or almost entirely. But it is a HUGE area that is affected - the size of Texas or New South Wales, or at least 4 times the area affected by Hurricane Katrina...

Depends on where you are... In Grantham, west of Brisbane, which was hit with extreme flash flooding (they had no warning whereas Brisbane had some warning, if you have seen the footage of cars flying down the muddy rivers, that's probably taken in Toowoomba but they got the same deal...) it is very much search and rescue, relocation. Relocation still is for a lot of suburbs, although for many suburbs / towns people are having to stay elsewhere and are now starting to clean up. The probably won't be able to return for some time...

Donations are always welcome. The government will be able to do a lot of stuff, they're supplying "skip" (the industrial bins) to remove rubbish for example, the army is out and about helping with searching and clean ups and whatever else, plus of course all the infrastructure like roads and all that stuff... But they aren't going to be able to supply everything. People still need personal items - there are people who have lost everything toothbrushes and toothpaste, business that need help (and insurance here may or may not include floods so many businesses lose everything and can't get insurance pay outs...) so donations are well needed...

I don't think there would be any or at least extremely rare. If it ever happens it is most likely to be big news all over every TV station. All my time in Australia, I have never heard of one case.

IF...you also count people dying in car accident because their cars hit a roo or swerve to avoid them and crashed, then there may be a few.

You can always try the Australian Bureau of statistics website. They might have something.

(if you are from overseas... some explanation: roos can be inflict horrible injuries but they are not "dangerous" creatures. They don't go around attacking and killing people. They would normally run away when approached. They become dangerous if cornered or provoked.)
