most fan clutches have a a fluid in them. If this fluid leaks out, it no longer works properly. This site should explain the system very well. Also fan clutches are not an expensive or hard to change part.

What is considered "High Mileage"?

I have a 91' Honda Accord Lx 4 speed Automatic and I am wondered what is considered "High Mileage" for this particular car? It has 177,xxx miles, Just bought a couple weeks ago with a clear title and clear carfax report. Thanks!

Opinions vary very little- any vehicle with over 75,000 miles would be considered high mileage - it's not a matter of year per se but total miles so any year vehicle with 177000 miles would be a car that has very high mileage. The lifespan of most vehicle engines averages around 200,000 miles, but there are many vehicles that go well beyond that - it requires special attention with that kind of mileage, use synthetic or semi-synthetic motor oil for oil changes. I have a Mazda that I'm having a hard time giving up that has 226,000 miles on it and she's still going strong. However, through special permission you can drive under that age. Its quite different from the United States laws on driving. Also, sometimes you get your hands cut off for speeding, especially if you are on a motorcycle (haven't heard about that lately though). The laws are strict. You must obey the speed limit and all road rules otherwise severe penalties can be put into place. It is actually scary to drive in Mexico because of all the uncertainty and drugs going on there.

Which uses less energy- Car air conditioning or rolling down the windows?

I'm curious if it is cheaper on gas to roll the windows down, or to run the air conditioner in the car. I know the air conditioning uses energy, but with rolling your window down, a lot of air that usually goes around your car, goes in it. What do you think? Are than any studies that prove this either way?

That means that for trips to the grocery store, post offices, and visiting ma and pa, drive with the windows down...In cases where the vehicle is running at speeds closer to 55 mph, gas inefficiency reaches the 20% mark. Very simply put, both sides of the debate are correct depending on the kind of driving in question. When town driving, leave the windows open, when highway or higher speeds driving, the AC is definitely the way to go."

Edited: I was pretty sure I remembered this in a "Straight Dope" column as well. Thanks to the previous answer for the link. Notice that Cecil agrees with my source that it's less efficient at 60 mph to open the windows, but it doesn't make nearly as much difference for his car as my source suggested.
