I'm living in Singapore and thinking of moving to Johor bahru?

Rick E

I hear such terrible things from Singaporeans about Johor, but some Malaysia who live there say its not that bad. What is the real story. I'm American so a little crime doesn't bother me to much but I have two small kids and a wife to worry about. Singapore is EXPENSIVE!! and its killing me slowly. I need to move somewhere cheaper but close to Singapore as my wife is a Singaporean. I don't want to take her to far from her family because they're really close. So.... how bad is Johor Bahru????

Answer
Singapore is EXPENSIVE depending how you live...
A 2+1 HDB flat rental will cost around/min SGD1.3k (depending on area)
Local dinner at local coffee shop for a family of 4 will cost around SGD12 to SGD15
Electricity and water cost around SGD200 a month
Transportation is good as long you have good money... T.T
Minimum spending is around 4k per month for normal local family

Option 01:
Considering JB
Your wife a Singaporean, It be over her dead body if you wanna get her to live in JB.
Transportation is always good in JB as long as you have a car.
Food are cheap and nice, sometimes too nice, you will spend more than in SG

Option 02:
Ask you wife to get a JOB and have her FAMILY look after your children.
Singapore girl always think that they don't need to work as long as they married an Caucasian.
With 2 income per family and minimal your spending, at least you will die slower...try to get used to local life style and act like an local "Uncle"...you'll survive

Crime rate in SG are no better than JB. They just go "unreported" in the news...and later selected few to be documented in "Crime Watch" and broad cast on CH5. Singaporean always say JB danger cannot go la...but every weekend Singapore cars jammed the Causeway. Singapore "Auntie"s flocked the checkpoints and bazaars and Singapore guys sleep in JB hotels.

p.s RM240k is lesser than SGD100k. You can easily buy a nice Bungalow or 2 condo near JB with the price of a 3 room flat. Single storey terrace house around Gelang Patah cost around RM90k - RM110k. JB house are cheap even if you compare it within the State of Johor itself.

Why doesn't anybody in this forum ask for information about immigrating to Japan, South Korea or Hong Kong?

Sniper of

I mean, everybody from 3rd world countries is always asking questions on how to get into countries like France, Brittain, Germany, Australia, US and Canada, while Hong kong, Japan and South Korea are also all fine examples of advanced nations. Yet, no-one seems willing to take up residence there. Why do they always ask about the same places?

Answer
BRAVO to YOU, Topsail Mayhem! An excellent question, indeed! I've lived in Taiwan and loved every smokin' minute of it. I have so many friends from Japan, Korea, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, etcetera, that I speak Chinese better than English (almost...hehe)

There are only a few reasons people would not be so quick to immigrate there and LANGUAGE is NOT one of them. Or, at least it shouldn't be. Chinese has no plural or singular, no verb tenses or conjugations of any kind, no masculine or feminine.

Just learn the tones and the words, some grammar - common sentence structure - and you're off like a herd of Pekingfish.

But China is a long way from most nations of any deeper poverty than their own rural poor. No jobs they won't have already filled. So why go? Many immigrants from our south come for freebies. In China? Forget it! Birthright citizenship? BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHAHA... ... hehehe.. hehe... mmmMMMBWAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!

Oh... oh my... that hurt! Get real!

Japan is an Island with no natural resources. And their government is peculiarly quick to hear the people. When labor shortages were answered by "returning" ethnic Japanese from Brazil to Japan, the jobs were quickly filled but the newcomers acted terribly unreserved in the eyes of locals. Complaints were constant: they play their music loud in their cars and homes, the bass is deafening, they urinate outside, on Saturday and Sunday night, they get drunk and drive up and down main street, honking their horns, they butcher animals outside where children can see and... worst of all... they DON'T SPEAK JAPANESE!!!!

I guess that must be uh... "racist"? to some people?

Korea? Don't know much about Korea. They're different. All I know from my Korean friends is that the ladies seem to have a mean-streak (not always, but best not take any chances), they all get along with Japanese and become their college roommates but, in textbooks and news stories, Japan is the Devil. Go figure.

Hong Kong is now in the same situation as China. By which I mean, they ARE China.

So, all that said, the best thing for impoverished countries to do is NOT go where they are but DO WHAT THEY DID!!!!!

...

Why don't the Japanese whaling vessels simply ram these bunny huggers and send them to the bottom?

NONAME

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/as_antarctica_whaling

Interfering with a merchant vessel in international waters borders on piracy. Why do the Japanese continue to show such restraint? It would be very simple to "accidentally" harpoon the smelly hippie protesters and sink their vessel.
r1: Outrage would be only on the left. Most normal people would welcome it.

What caused the major economic recession in America?

Ryan R

Can you list the 3 biggest factors of the recession?

And a side question...when one looks at a stock chart...the graph is not a straight line, rather a "spiked line". Why is that?

Answer
I copied this from http://www.millionaireacts.com/432/what-caused-the-recession.html.

What i got out of it was, that peoples eyes were bigger that their pocketbooks, they bought a bunch of stuff they couldn't afford. Then they got into major debt that they couldn't pay off. so they stopped spending money. As for the side question i think its because the stock doesnt receive a constant stream of info. it just updated every couple of hours. Its like connect the dots. Hope this helps.

We are now living in one of the worst global financial crisis. This is proven by the fact that a lot of economies are going into recession and trillions of stock values were wiped out. Aside from these, a lot of companies have reduced their earnings with a lot of plant closures and job lay offs.
We often hear the word recession. Weâve watched news that Singapore, Germany, Japan, and New Zealand officially declared recession in their economies. But what is recession? And what caused it?
Recession, in economics, is defined as the contraction of an economyâs Gross Domestic Product for at least two consecutive quarters. That means the economy shrank.
We all know that the worldâs largest economy is that of the United States. A lot of countries depend on them most especially countries which depend on export products. Thereâs this popular saying that âwhen United States sneezes, everybody catches a coldâ. This is so true nowadays which is evident in the domino effect of the global financial crisis with a lot of economies caught colds.
What caused the recession? The problem started in the United States with the so-called Subprime Mortgage Crisis. The crisis was triggered by the rise in mortgage delinquencies leading to foreclosure of houses and ultimately a credit crunch leading to a freeze in liquidity.
Subprime Mortgage are mortgages given to high default risk credit borrowers. A lot of mortgages issued in US are called subprime which means that little or no downpayment was made by the borrowers to buy houses, cars, etc. Some credit were even given to low income families or with bad credit history. Because of the nature of these mortgages, a lot of borrowers defaulted on their loans which led to banks foreclosing securities of these loans including houses, cars, etc.
All these accumulated and led to the âcredit squeezeâ. There were no more cash available to other borrowers as all these cash were frozen to foreclosed houses with no willing buyers. The tightening of credit led to a slow down of the economy as there were no more loans available to other borrowers which they can probably use as capital in their businesses. Now, this led to a series of events:

Low Demand. Because of the tightening of credit, there was a slow demand of products of these businesses.

Decrease of Profits. Because of low demand, then there was a decrease in profits for these businesses.
Plant Closures. Because of decrease of profits, then companies need to shut down some of their plants to reduce costs. There was also a notable increase in bankruptcy filings.
Job Lay Offs. Because of plant closures and bankruptcy filings, then companies laid off a lot of their employees and unemployment rate rose.
Stock Market Decline. All these series of events led to the rampant fear of stock investors dumping their stocks which led to tremendous wipe outs of stock values.
The United States and other countries are all doing their best to combat this financial crisis by using different strategies including the recent US$700 Billion bail out plan to increase liquidity in the economy. US Treasury is providing millions and billions of loans to ailing companies to sustain this financial crisis and prevent further recessionof other economies.
The current recession have caused some companies to succumb and declare bankruptcy. Two of these companies include Six Flags, the worldâs largest theme park and CIT Group, the American commercial and finance company.

why is the Singapore dollar so strong?

bazbsg

When I look at what it costs to buy things in Singapore (SG) in SG dollars and compare that to what it costs to buy similar things in the USA with US dollars, I wonder why the exchange rate of the SG dollar is so strong. Housing, cars, groceries, restaurants, hotels, electronics all cost more in SG. I would have thought the exchange rate was basically a matter of the cost of goods in the different currencies. What other factors affect the exchange rate between currencies in general and what factors are making the SG dollar so strong in general?

Answer
Housing and cars are two things in Singapore you cannot compare to other countries. Because of its extremely small size, Singapore is very short of land, but the population is growing, so the property prices keep rising, which means that as time goes by, only the rich can afford private housing. About 75% of the population live in government subsidised housing. Also due to the lack of land space coupled with a dense population, the roads are clogged with traffic jams, so the govt slaps a very heavy charge to own a car, trying to drive down the car population. It costs a lot less to buy the same house or car in the US.

However other things are relatively cheap, like electronic goods and food (apart from expensive restaurants).

As to the exchange rate, perhaps this article would help:

Which country's economy been least affected by downturn?

Katya

Do you know which major country has survived virtually unscathed and do you know why?

(Please don't use this for political podium)

Answer
Regardless of what political speech of India Prime minister praised about his ruled country, I think every one in this world thinks China is being least affected by the economy downturn.
New Delhi, Feb 26 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Thursday said India would emerge 'the least affected' country in the world from the current global economic meltdown.
First of all, Chinese are working hard for very little money. Why the US GM sucked? Can you afford to pay US $75/hr to produce one car for the estimated loss of more than US $ 2,000. I read Yahoo answers that Chinese workers in southern China are making equivalent to less than US$ 10/hr for Honda's. Furthermore, those US executives' paid bonus and compensations have evoked the majority American economic wise personnel accepted Obama who passed the bill of Executive Caps about a few months ago. They took the big chunk of money and then screwed up their companies then for sale, awaiting bail out, declared bankruptcy, being merged. However, Richard Fuh of the notorious Lehman Brothers took 75 millions US dollars bonus after he turned his bank or financial institution go bankrupt. Likewise, Joseph Yam, the chief of Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HMKA) did take HK $ 10.3 millions in 2007 and made HKMA lost HK $1008 billions at the same year.
The twin evil of too heavy in stock market investment and too much property development and real estate transaction, coupled with highest paid Hong Kong civil servants and top officials in Hong Kong, sooner or later Doomsday will come in scene in this small polluted city. Hong Kong is being affected the most by the global economic downturn due to the highest budget in civil services and public expenditure. Hong Kong has turned into the highest young peoples suicide rate in this world and many under aged teens are involved in the sex trade, both boys and girls. Two group of teens aged 14 to 16 were caught for robbed two taxi drivers in the past two weeks. Many Hong Kong citizens are being affected by the economic downturn such as killing persons from the back lanes of the side streets, and the shocking news of throwing drainge cleaning acid to the same crowdy spot for three times in the past six months.
I think the following articles provide a clear indication why the many Asian countries are being less affected by the global economic downturn, particularly China, Singapore, and South Korea. I think it has to do with life style of the Americans, Canadians, and Europeans. The living standards are much lower in the Asia is the key word for being least affected by the economic downturn. Hong Kong is the worst in terms of economic stability, crime and suicide rate, fair wage practices for all kinds of workers, the wage disparity among the public and private sectors, local and foreign owned firms.
