Is there a neighborhood Cat Lady near you?

zeebya

It seems that several of the neighborhoods I grew up in had a cat lady. Y'know the kind: their house reeks, their shhets look like a collection of old bath towels, and their bath towels look like cleaning rags from H e l l. They were usually friendly, definately crazy. I want to hear about your "cat lady" or are you one of them yourself?

I have raised about 35 cats in my life.
I think you probably need to have at least 5 cats before you qualify as a "cat lady." Even if you're a guy...

Answer
Maybe I'm one, although my house doesn't reek and my bath towels are just fine (why are you so hung up on towels??hmmmm) My oldest brother is not an animal lover and he thinks I'm going to die from a mountain of old newspapers and magazines falling on me while my 99 cats look on! So, when he calls and asks me "So, how many cats do you have now?" I give him a bigger and bigger number (last time I told him 24 (In truth I have 6) hahahahahahaha. When our humane society recently confiscated 35 cats from a real collector (that's what they call them - or a "hoarder") I sent my brother the news article with "It's NOT me!" written over it.
What about dog people?? I've known of people who have 'packs' of dogs. Talk about stink and noise! Don't make us cat people (well, we have a big dog and horses too) out to be the only eccentrics!

What is the difference between crazy cat ladies and crazy pig ladies?

daisy

This lady, and she's young, keeps 40 pigs in her house. Isn't there a law or something?
I would provide a news video of this, but it would be deleted.

* Yahoo mail is completely scrapped for me tonight, so I may as well ask a question.
Anyone else having email problems?
.
It is not my computer. Go into Answers- Mail category and see the endless complaint questions. Like all their other efforts, not all are being worked on at the same time.

Answer
I've had no problems at all with my email.

As for the crazy ladies, it might interest you to know that pigs given half a chance, are one of the cleanest animals in the world. That is a fact. While cats on the other hand carry more diseases than the majority. Therefore my answer would have to be that the pig lady is the smarter of the two.

Abandoned Cats in Complex Management wont let us feed them anymore & its cold out. PLease help!?

| Roxy

A couple months ago we started seeing a few cats around the complex, then the disappeared for awhile. We found out the management of the complex had captured them and had them all fixed then brought them back and released them in the complex. Instead of sending them to a shelter they just left them to roam free. Well One cat in particular kept coming up to our place then we started feeding her a couple times til she started inviting some other cats with her. So we decided to feed them as well. They weren't too much they'd come and visit once in awhile. Well this one cat we fed seemed to have started to let all the other cats know. She'd let all the other cats eat before she got any .. One day she brought a baby with her and they have been close ever since. She mothers this baby cat makes sure it eats before she does.. etc. Well everything was going well no trouble or anything not mess no problem we put food out in the morning & at night before bed. Well now the weather is getting colder. Today my sister got a phone call from management saying one of the neighbors called and complained that the cats scare her kids and we are feeding them.

So I caught one of the cats which is a very loving cat must have been a pet before then abandoned. He is staying at my mothers right now. But the main cat and the baby are still out there and I had to sneak food real quick but I couldnt leave it out there and I dont think she got much. I am so sick to my stomache because of this news because I dont understand how any human being could believe that we could stop feeding these cats especially with winter coming when they will not be able to hunt. I am going to try to catch the Main cat and the baby and my mother is going to take them but the cats will still be out there and it will kill me to see them roaming around looking for food I cannot turn away from them.

I need some advice??

These cats had no interference with this lady and her kids. She is just plain rude, her husband is a very nice man who has never complained.

I cannot sleep. I am staying at my mothers house with the other cat to get her comfortable with the place or until I find a home for it but I cannot tell you how terrible I feel. What can I do about this???

It is their fault these cats are back in the complex.

Answer
You specified "abandoned cats" Leading me to believe someone owned them and left them. The manager of the buildiong is concerned enough to spay and neuter. I have to give him kudos for that. But you cannot spay and neuter cats and leave them to starve. These cats are not feral and while they may hunt to survive the winter, are accustomed to being fed and will keep coming back. Some cats are skittish of humans, rightfully so. Animal Control in many counties automatically euthanize cats when they pick them up as they do not have holding facilities for them. In some of the areas where feral cats are a problem, the Humane Society can offer little help. People will go to adopt a dog, but there never seems to be anyone going there for cats. That is why people who have cats tend to have a lot.
I personally have six cats and I am only approved to house 12 in my kennel. Feral cats are becoming a huge problem and people like the management of this building are not helping. Unfortunately, once he had the cats "fixed," they became his cats. You can report him for not feeding them but with the situation as dire as it is, they may well be euthanized if taken.
You can call the ASPCA anonymously and ask what the laws in your county dictate concerning the care of cats and that would lead you to your next step.
I admire your tenacity. I could use someone like you in my rescue. Most people give up far too easily on cats.
Now...all that said... if it were me: I would set up a crate large enough for the cats and put the food in it, just off the property as soon as the cats walk in, shut the crate and take them to your mother. This is how I spay and neuter feral cats around my house. Make sure you feed away from the building where the neighbor will not get scared again. GOOD LORD. The cats scare her children? I am sorry. I guess I should not say that. She should be teaching her children not to be afraid of animals. I suppose she is afraid if they like cats they will want one. I have seen too many parents do this to their children and they end up with all kinds of phobias. But that is beside the point I suppose.
Just feed the cats away from the building. Find a safe spot and you should be able to get them to your mother's fairly quickly. But do call the ASPCA first and ask them what you can legally do. In some areas, they may even help you. But PLEASE do it anonymously first because when our rescue group first became active there was such a problem in this county with feral cats, if I got a call about a cat the laws said I had to call animal control. We have corrected that. But there are many counties that still do this.
Good Luck.

Opinions on me vs. cat lady.?

Ecofreako

There is a cat lady in my home town that feeds all of the strays at the grain elevator. Everyday she comes and dumps half a bag of cat food on the ground (fortunately she does it at the same time every day). As soon as she leaves, I go out and sweep up all the cat food and put it in a tight container to be discarded.

A friend told me I shouldn't do this, but I don't want 1000 cats running around, and the food will also be providing for vermin. Fewer cats living and breeding now will mean fewer cats starving and dying in the future. Utilitarianism?

What do you think... am I a meanie or in the moral right (I know I'm in the legal right and the guy that operates the elevator thanked me for doing it)
actually it is illegal to leave food outdoors for strays here. Because it attracts vermin. The cats also do alot of damage to the natural animals in this ecosystem.
In addition to this I'm trapping cats and taking them to the authorities. The problem is she is providing for a large wild cat population. If you saw these cats you'd want to shoot most of them to put them out of their misery (honestly).
I don't want "survival wise" kittens... I want NO cats here... and I will do anything within my legal rights to eliminate as many stray cats as possible.

Answer
You might contact the local humane society and the local news reporters and see if they will do a story on it . Public awareness might help with a solution . She is not helping the cats, just adding to the problem .The humane society can set live traps and capture the cats . If they are adoptable they could find homes for them but if they are diseased, then they need to be put down . That is the kind thing to do .

A group of scientists want to release an insect found in Japan to deal with Japanese knotweed.

Do not get me wrong, I think it is a good idea to get rid of it, but I get the feeling that introducing another 'alien' to the UK will not be a good thing. Anyone agree or disagree?

Answer
Oh my gosh.. They did that in Australia with toads from south America to kill the sugarcane beetle.. which it did but the blasted toad multiplied so quickly . They kill our native animals, who eat it and die from the poison itn the toads glands, dogs and cats etc, now it is legal here to kill the dam things with a wallop with a cricket bat..

What are the little orange ladybug looking things?

lilylady20

Are they ladybugs, or some other sort of bug? I know ladybugs are bright red, but these are orange. Any tips to keep them out? Also, are they poisonous (like being eaten)? If my cats see ANYTHING moving their first thought is "it must be food!", so how diligent to I need to be?
Yikes. I really don't like bugs.
To the person who said to keep my cats inside - well I don't really have much choice but to keep them inside as I'm in an apartment, the problem would be the bugs INSIDE the apartment! I really hate bugs.

Answer
These are asian beetles, they won't harm you. Occansionaly they bite and when squished they stink. I live in MN and we get them bad in the fall, I spray my house outside with bleach/water mixture. I use a hose with one of them bottles you can attach. It helps the most. The other thing is vacuum, vacuum, vacuum. Wish there was more but not alot you can do.

here is an article of interest ~ also google Asian Beetles

Those Nasty Asian Lady Beetles!
What can I do about the hundreds of Asian lady beetles that invaded my home last fall? This is a question many Minnesotans have posed and the answer is remove them with a vacuum cleaner. Unfortunately, as they are being sucked up and crushed, they emit an unpleasant odor that may linger inside the vacuum. To prevent this odor problem place a cup-shaped gauze or nylon trap near the end of the vacuum hose, then clean out the gauze traps and dispose of the trapped beetles. Composting is a good idea.

Asian lady beetle populations are increasing in Minnesota because this species presently has no known natural enemies to control its numbers. The worst news is that they are replacing other species of lady beetles that are native to Minnesota.

Will these beetles invade my house next fall? The answer is possibly. To reduce the possibility of another invasion this fall, seal cracks and openings around windows, doors, siding and utility pipes with caulk. Install door sweeps on thresholds at the base of entry doors and repair damaged window and door screens. Installing a screen behind the attic vent will keep the bats out, too.

Hope that helps

Breeding pure bred cats and dogs whats your opinion?

Meow

I have found that for some reason people think that breeding purebred cats , for the purpose of showing and enhancing the breed is almost a crime but breeding dogs for the same purpose is ok , I am curious about the ratio please post your opnions = ) .
darla only bad breeders can live off of an income from breeding animals. Breeding animals that are healthy happy and conform to breed standards is very expensive and in my experiance costs way more then any income you might make from selling a kitten, vet care, registry fees, show fees , travel , good quality food etc make for an expensive hobby

Answer
Many of the answers, so far, include valid points.

As a breeder of pedigreed cats myself, I have never had anyone challenge me on my motives or ethics. However, a few people have assumed that all of this work that I do with and for my cats and my breed is a "business". It isn't. I don't profit. It is a VERY expensive hobby.

Unfortunately there are a very few people out there who's actions as breeders ruin the reputation of the fancy for all of us. They are either motivated by money, cut corners and care very little about the health or well-being of their animals, or they have too many cats in comparison with the time, money and other resources available to them.

Raising cats, unlike dogs, has two challenges.

First, some cats need to be bred more than once a year; they are prolific producers and a cat's health may be at stake if she has too many unbred heats. Therefore, its very easy to have too many cats at a time if you don't have a waiting list of forever homes. If those cats get sick, a breeder often must treat every cat in the house/cattery at tremendous cost. It can get out of hand if one is not prepared physically and financially to care for many cats at once.

Second, raising cats can be very isolating. Dogs spend a lot of time outside. Pedigreed cats, typically, are indoor-only animals. For me, as someone who also has a job outside of the home, I do little more than work at my job and then work at home to do either housework or care for the animals. I don't get out much. I can't just meet up with a friend and take our pets for a walk. I don't see my friends and family who don't like my cats. The fancy seems to attract introverted people and often people who are loners stick with it; the extroverts don't, in my experience. Not that there is anything wrong with being quiet, shy or introverted, however these people and what they do are often misunderstood. Unfortunately the fancy also attracts what seems to be a number of self-isolating people with mental health problems; they prefer cats to people.

I think these two reasons contribute to the image of "crazy cat ladies". I am a self-declared sane and ethical cat lady... but there are some days I do come close to the edge. LOL I am an extrovert and I do think you MUST be crazy to go through what we do for the cats and not profit. Crazy for cats or crazy for... ? LOL

The one thing I promise to myself, my family and my cats is that we'll never end up on the news for being dirty or over-run. I think its upto the breeders in the fancy to educate others about what we do and why and how it should be done propperly.

That's part of the reason why I post here. I also love talking about cats and learning, too.

Leopard spots on body long curly tail with black rings. Not a bobcat, cougar. Similar cat on Leno last night called serval but they live in Africa. Came in my apt and tried to attack my cat.
It looks just like the serval only smaller. Not a lynx or leopard. Twice the size of a house cat.

Why is Cindy McCain not covered by the news?

ObaMoose

People call Obama an elitist, but Cindy McCain is worth over a hundred million dollars. They say they leave her alone since she doesn't campaign, but isn't being First Lady an important job nowadays?

Her eyes creep me out.
Good to hear she helps Operation Smile. I support something a lot like it.

Answer
Yes, Mrs. McCain is the perfectly coifed blonde standing dutifully behind the senator during his speeches. And yes, she wears stylish clothing and carries a Prada purse. And it's true she doesn't say much. But feminist critics who write her off as a "stand-by-your-man" shrinking violet are selling her short. In many ways, Cindy McCain stacks up sturdier than Hillary Clinton or Michelle Obama. And she'd make a more impressive first lady.

Mrs. McCain: More than meets the eye.

While Obama's wife has been hating America, complaining about the war and undermining our troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, McCain's wife has been worrying about her sons who actually are fighting or planning to fight in the war on terror. One, in fact, was until a few months ago deployed in Iraq during some of the worst violence.

You don't hear the McCains talk about it, but their 19-year-old Marine, Jimmy, is preparing for his second tour of duty. Their 21-year-old son, Jack, is poised to graduate from Annapolis and also could join the Marines as a second lieutenant. The couple made the decision not to draw attention to their sons out of respect for other families with sons and daughters in harm's way.

Cindy also says she doesn't want to risk falling apart on the campaign trail talking about Jimmy who was so young when he enlisted she had to sign consent forms for his medical tests before he could report for duty and potentially upsetting parents of soldiers who are serving or have been killed.

The McCains want to make sure their boys get no special treatment. Same goes for their five other children, including a daughter they adopted from Bangladesh. During a visit to Mother Teresa's orphanage there, Cindy noticed a dying baby. The orphanage could not provide the medical care needed to save her life. So she brought the child home to
America for the surgery she desperately needed. The baby is now their healthy, 16-year-old daughter, Bridget.

Though all seven McCain children including two Sen. McCain adopted from his first marriage are supportive of their father, they prefer their privacy to the glare of the campaign trail. Another daughter, Meghan, 23, helps him behind the scenes.

Cindy McCain not only cherishes her children, but also her country, which in an election year filled with America-bashing, is a refreshing novelty. She seethed when she heard Michelle Obama's unpatriotic remarks that she only recently grew proud of America. "I am very proud of my country," Mrs. McCain asserted.

She also may be tougher than the other women in the race. While Hillary thinks she's come under sniper fire on mission trips abroad, Cindy has actually seen violence. She witnessed a boy get blown up by a mine in Kuwait during a trip with an international group that removes land mines from war-torn countries.

Mrs. McCain also is a hands-on philanthropist. She sits on the board of Operation Smile, which arranges for plastic surgeons to fix cleft palates and other birth defects. She also has helped organize relief missions to Micronesia.

During a scuba-diving vacation to the islands, Mrs. McCain took a friend to a local hospital to have a cut treated. She was shocked, and saddened, by what she saw.

"They opened the door to the OR, where the supplies were, and there were two cats and a whole bunch of rats climbing out of the sterile supplies," she recalled. "They had no X-ray machine, no beds. To me, it was devastating because it was a U.S. trust territory."

As soon as she returned home, she arranged for medical equipment and teams of doctors to be sent to treat the island children.

Michelle Obama may contribute to CARE, which fights global poverty and works to empower poor women. Cindy sits on its board.

While the Democrat women talk about helping the poor and needy, Cindy McCain actually rolls up her sleeves and does it. Who's the out-of-touch elitist?
