Running a car with no catalytics...?

God of the

So my question is plain and simple: what would come of cutting the cats off a car to improve exhaust flow (along with new headers, H-pipe, cherry bomb mufflers, etc...)? I know this would take environmentally friendly to a whole new low, but what could happen to the engine? Thanks in advance!
What about on more modern cars? Wouldn't not having cats mess with the computer control system? The O2 sensors would be off the charts.

Answer
Depending on the year of your car, your check engine light will come on...if you don't fool it.

**additional info** The check engine light will come on with 1996 and newer vehicles (some before). There is a O2 sensor before and after the catalysts to measure the efficiency of the emissions device. If you remove it, it will think its not working properly and turn the light on.

1990 model car needs emissions test?

Tony

I'm located in Houston, TX and i have a 1990 Toyota Corolla that needs an inspection. It was just given to me by my aunt, title and all. How much should I expect the inspection to run? The car is also still insured until June.

the Audi TTRS is also quite fast.
modified Subaru Impreza WRX STIs can also be extremely fast and you can go that with less than $100,000. depending on your modifications, an STI with adjustable coilovers, different springs and tires can go from a street racer to an offroad rally beast in no time at all.

the Caterham Super 7 is also crazy fast for less than $100,000.

How did the man really drive the car blindfolded?

thickbk-th

This morning (June 08, 2011) Fox 5 news in San Diego, CA, featured a "magician" driving a car blindfolded. The report stated that the man was truly blindfolded as well as hooded as he drove the car around what seemed like a parking lot full of cars. Who can come up with the method this man used to pull off this stunt?

Answer
He could see through the blindfold. Probably under it by looking down. The only real way to make sure someone can't actually see is to tape their eyelids shut. Looking around a blindfold and/or hood is one of the first tricks magicians learn.

How hard is it to engine swap? Honda CRX?

Q. I want to swap a my 91 CRX HF D15B6 engine to a larger/faster Honda engine? Is it complicated and hard? What do you need to make them fit?

Answer
Well its not hard at all. First do you know how to work a engine hoist? 2nd do you know how do a timing belt. 3rd do you feel comfortable about remove an engine?

Simple remove your D motor and replace it. SOHC/DOHC ZC or what they are D motors are direct bolt in no wiring needed unless its a Vtec. For more info on that.

THEZCR.com

B-serious need motor mounts, axles, shiftlinkage same as above. I belive you need a different brake hub. LS motors 1.8L B20 2.0L non vtec need no wiring but you need to convert to OBD1 Vtec motors need more wiring
Hasport.com
rywire.com

K-serious lets just say if you ask this question you can do it on your own that goes H motors.

What I suggest?
I done many ZC motors before simple cheap the SOHC ZC has about 130HP in a car that weighs 2000 you should be 15.0-15.5 in the 1/4 with a decent tire and traction lower 15's. Boost on this motors a safe 7-8psi tune your 13's friend will show.
SOHC long block $400
ZC non lsd tranny $150 LSD $400

B-serious are great you can get a B16 swap down for less then $2000 if you do it yourself. 14.7-15.2 1/4 GSR take another .20-.30 off ITR motor is a monster .40-.50 off. All these times should be on your stock street tires. 200whp in this car will net you high 13's range.

Answer
Well it isnt as simple as you make it seem, first you dont slap them on and woot HP.

You need fuel upgrade, fuel pump since its a 17yr old car, larger injectors, you need to place the map sensor and brake booster somewhere and must important tune!!!!

Still want to do it link below:
http://homemadeturbo.com/tech_projects/itb/index.html

Look into OBD-0 ZC SOHC motor and trans ecu it net you 130 crank HP with a good intake header and exhaust 140-145 crank HP since the D15B2 isnt taht good, look at hmotorsonline.com for the motor

Car recommendation; info inside?

Tox

So...I'm considering trading in my expensive bimmer and getting a sport bike for my speed addiction and a secondary car for when I need to go grocery shopping/need the room of a regular car to carry stuff/people around.

Also...I like to go skiing, so I would like to get 4wd with it and room to carry skis and my gear.

So...I'm looking for recommendations on getting a used car that is cheap to maintain that I can use around town when I need it and take it into the snow during winter.

Opinions?

Answer
You are better off selling the car out right & buying what you want.
Without knowing a budget, taste in cars or region that you live in there is no way to give you an educated guess on what you are looking for.
You'll have to see what's available & how bad a car lot will screw you on a trade.

Lincoln Town Car Buyer Info?

Adam

I've been in the market for a first car for a little bit now, having been driving around my dad's dear departed Buick since I was 16 and am in the need of a car for college. My attention immediately went to the town car because I am apparently the reincarnation of a sun city retirement community member and have a love for this type of car. I've saved up about 4000 but my price range is 4-5k. My hope was to find a great deal in the coming months for a TC between the years of 98-03 (preferably 03 because I'm a sucker for a pretty face). If there's any info from Lincoln owners or just car owners in general about issues, maintenance schedule, when to do whatever, leather care, really anything you can think of that could help me at all I would really appreciate it. Or if you don't lincolns or TCs or Ford or America in general, you can point me in the right direction. Thanks guys!
Fuel economy won't be my main concern. I don't live far from my college and I'm try to secure a job very near to it. So any commute I make (if my plans work out) won't be very far. That's why I ruled out low mpg as a deal breaker
Also, my hope was to buy from owner with around 100,000 miles and looking on craigslist that seems to be quite possible.Would that be a bad idea? My father came up with the idea and I did not question it.

Answer
Poor fuel mileage,
---

Damn...someone got some serious standards. I wouldn't call 25 MPGs on the highway, "poor" by any stretch with a v8 car.

Anyway, OP, I love the Town Car look from that era, but getting one for $4000 or so will be quite difficult. Get a Grand Marquis or Crown Vic, instead. Bill got one thing right, for once. The airbag suspension can be troublesome. Town Cars have that standard. The other panther cars only have it as an option, so you can find one of them without it.

Small town info.?

T

I am in my 30s, single, no children. I would like to move somewhere else in the future. For people living in small towns, tell me why your town is a great place to live and why. I am looking for info that you don't get in books.

Answer
Lawrence, KS

http://www.lawrence.com/

http://www.city-data.com/city/Lawrence-Kansas.html

The "Midwest Oasis." It's between Kansas City & Topeka, home to Haskell Indian Nations University & the University of Kansas.

Population 80,000, including 30,000 KU students (the town dramatically shrinks in the summer when all the students & professors are out-of-town). But there is an amazing sense of community here & feels a lot smaller. Everyone knows everyone.

Downtown, East Lawrence, & Old West Lawrence have the small town feel. West Lawrence is suburbia from hell. It is very possible to never, ever cross over to that side of town because we have a vibrant downtown with retail shops, restaurants (down home & exotic), bars (something for everyone, including Free State Brewery), & small grocery stores (local, organic, & specialty). And there is a great Farmers' Market 9 months of the year. Local food--everything from greens & tofu to elk & buffalo--is big here.

There is an okay bus system and a lot of people walk or bike everywhere. It's a progressive, open minded community. There is a no smoking ban (excluding the Hookah House), gay partner registry, & the city uses hybrid cars.

Because Lawrence was settled by people from Boston (in a successful effort to stop the spread of slavery west) it looks completely different from the rest of the state. There are trees everywhere, a river, a lake, and the town is centered around a giant hill (Mt. Oread) with KU at the top.

Lawrence is the 2nd most educated city in the country (after Boston). That means there are a lot of coffee shops & book stores.

The best jobs to be found are in education (public, Montessori, & Catholic schools), KU, the service industry, & self-employed. Other big employers here are Hallmark cards, the city government, & in-bound call centers (pay great, lousy atmosphere).

It's a magnet here. People move here from little Kansas towns for the quality of living. Or for school. Or for a job. And never leave. Or they do move away. Usually to Portland, OR, or Denver--then move back.

There are a broad spectrum of churches, a synagogue, a Buddhist center, a mosque, & agnostic & atheists groups.

The Downfalls

Spring & Fall are great. Winter is cold (although not like, say, Chicago). Summer is hot.

Cost-of-living is high for midwest towns. (California transplants laugh at this, though.)

It's in the middle of the country. Great for a lot of people. Not so great if want to live close to the ocean.

College kids are a mixed blessing. The annoying ones stick to places you'll never go.

The town is obsessed with basketball. (But also with Barrack Obama.)

The sprawling Westside. Again, easy to pretend it doesn't exist.

Not diverse compared to huge cities. (BUT exceptionally diverse for a town.)

Answer
Wynonna, Girls with Guitars. I'll look for the lyrics and post if I can find them.

She turned fifteen with great expectations
Her older brother knew somethin? was up
He caught her going through his record collection
Lookin? at hendricks like a love sick pup
She begged and she pleaded till dad finally listened
He drove her in the car down to sears roebuck
He bought her that guitar and that was the beginning
Now shes down in the cellar with the amp turned up

Girls with guitars
Daddys little angel
Girls with guitars
Whats the world coming to?
Girls with guitars
Mothers tend to worry about
Girls with guitars

Well, saturday nights she followed her brother
It was socks and stockings on the old gym floor
While everybody danced to garage band covers
She was checking out riffs and memorizing chords
She didnt care at all for the football heroes
She didnt even notice the basketball stars
Boys as a species were all a bunch of zeroes
Except for the ones that played that guitar

Girls with guitars
She wasnt any debutante
Girls with guitars
She didnt go out for cheerleading
Girls with guitars
Boys are kinda nervous round
Girls with guitars

She went off to college, she got her degree
Her parents breathed a sigh of great relief
Daddys thinking law school, mothers thinking medicine
Daughters thinking how shes gonna break the news to them

Now theres an old chevy van just sitting in the driveway
Filled to the gills with all her stuff
She cut a deal with her brother to drive up the highway
Figures new york city is close enough
She gets the audition through a friend of a friend
Whos checking out her legs saying, this will never work!
She flips on her boogie and turns to the band
Gives a little grin and blows away the jerk

Girls with guitars
Now everybodys rockin? br> girls with guitars
There ought to be a song about
Girls with guitars
Theres just no stopping those
Girls with guitars

How effective is Yahoo Answers as a training ground for denial of climate science?

Hey Dook

The cheaters have vaporized this question of mine, for the laughable reason of "personal site promotion." The only links I have in it, are to the (widely acknowledge) DEFINITIVE history of the climate change science by Spencer Weart. There are lots of additional details, in it, more than there normally ought to be, and I hope Marissa Mayer reads them. Evidently, after years of neglect, Yahoo has started to invest in upgrading Answers, and the next step is to stop it from becoming a major platform for systematic attacks on scientific knowledge and scientific truth.

Herewith the prior two answers (and then as much of the additional detail as will fit):
[Well, one of the prior two answers; yours, Gary, is gone, I'm afraid. I thought I copied it, but somehow it wasn't picked up].

From Chem Flunky:

The problem is... 1. I suspect there are a lot more denialists than there are Holocaust deniers.
2. A lot of the people coming to Y!A are actually, legitimately confused or on the fence, and 3. there are some skeptics who *aren't* completely irrational.

So, responding to denialists as though they were at least vaguely sensible people makes sense to me, on the grounds that, even though it likely won't get into their thick skulls, responding intelligently and politely might shine some light into less thick skulls reading the same question.

Basically, what I'm saying is... I think it pays to respond politely and coherently to the denialists, so that any uninformed people *reading* the question later don't get the impression that realists don't have any sensible responses to denialists. Of course, I think it also pays to save and copypaste any good answers, so you don't have to rewrite them the thousanth time the same denialist lie or idiocy comes up...

Now to my PRIOR additional details:

Exhibit A: Sagebrush, whose posts, shall we say, are not distinguished by their intellectual brilliance, figured out how to get enough best answers to get into the top 10 list.

Exhibit B: Kano, after sounding when he first showed up here about as informed and sensible as Sagebrush, now approaches the clever trickery of JimZ or even Ottawa Mike.

What will it take until non-deniers here finally learn to stop "feeding" the Exxon-Mobil & Koch Bros, Marshall Institute & Heartland and Wattsup "trolls"?

Do Jewish historians waste tons of hours "debating," with "revisionists" (who have their "legitimate," differing "point of view"), over and over and over, point by point by point, the historical evidence for deliberate and systematic mass murder of millions of Jews and other minorities at the hands of the Nazis in World War II?

Why do you suppose that the much more usual response in that case is instead to name, shame, avoid and ban?

Would you spend a half hour every day trying to talk sense into a homeless street bum village idiot who rambles on and on in muddled gibberish about 9-11 conspiracies or channeling Elvis?
Chem: You seem to be conflating "denialists" with "the uninformed." Actually, it does not take much time spent here for the difference to become pretty darn obvious 95% of the time. And, you evidently remain still sadly unaware that GENUINE scientific skepticism about AGW in fact WAS the mainstream scientific consensus from about 1906 to 1956. Pretending "skeptics" of the last 20 years are in reality anything BUT.
Please read Spencer Weart's book or at least look at his website or article.
[For the book and website: google Weart Discovery of Global warming; for the article
Changing the climate of public opinion].

Chem: Can we agree (politely) to disagree? While you finally read Weart? Okay, his book is not light, creamy and easily digestible, but you can at least absorb key bite-sized points from his related website.

I think it is a mistake to respond at all to hard-core deniers of climate science. That is quite analogous to the position of most Je
[cont.]...most Jewish groups towards hard-core Holocaust deniers and I basically agree with it. (By the way, I am not sure there are many more climate science deniers than Holocaust deniers in large sections of the Mideast - not that politeness depends on the size of the audience, anyway ). I do not approve of laws in European countries making Holocaust denial a crime, but under the American 1st Amendment which I do fully endorse, allowing dangerous village idiots the right to free speech, does not require giving them a soap box. The internet itself is a huge soap box, there can be no justification for adding a listening board to it. Under the warped rules of this site, the only way to communicate with non-deniers is often by responding to what deniers post, but it should be borne in mind that scientific and historical facts are important, and I believe it is very demonstrable that on the order of 97% of what the hard-core deniers here say about climate science comes directly or indire
...indirectly from anti-science concocted by hired deceivers paid by Marshall Institute and the like in the late 1980s and 1990s. This is VERY similar, in terms of the basic process, to the recycling by Holocaust deniers of old anti-semitic canards and historical sleights of hand.

I agree with you about making it clear that there are sensible responses to denial. The problem is that those sensible responses (collected on places such as skepticalscience.org) have been around for decades (!), just like the denier myths those sensible responses demolish. At some point, after decades of endless recycling deliberate deception, as with the Holocaust, and evolution, and other such targets of systematic lying, one has to say: "Enough."

Unfortunately, the globally HUGE DIFFERENCE between climate change, on the one hand, and the Holocaust, evolution, etc. on the other hand, is that we and 50 generations to come CANNOT afford the luxury of ADDITIONAL decades of polite waiting. THAT, m
...more than any of the new findings sometimes obliquely touched upon in the many pitiful attempts to discredit the IPCC here, is the biggest message from the scientific experts today. The non-trolls have to get busy addressing the real problem and that (among a great many other things, of course,) means stop feeding the trolls, with politeness or anything else.

This website, it seems to me, is becoming a bigger and bigger anti-science troll-feeding trough. I am not sure exactly how to best respond to that, but I am sure that denying it is a mistake.
Walaka: Thanks for your thoughtful remarks, albeit mostly going beyond rather than addressing the question. I don't however agree with their overall implication. I think you need to do the carbon math on the IPCC ""carbon budget, and the various policy steps actually taken so far, and bring into better account the intergenerational and international "free-rider" problem which seriously limit motives for action regardless of anti-science denial. The examples you give of countries "doing what they can" amount to what I well imagine will add up to a few drops in the bucket (especially since we are already paying for decades of non-action) and sounds like a recipe for the world going way beyond the 2 degree increase threshold recommend by IPCC.

Answer
One positive to take home is that the number of denier trolls on this site is not actually increasing by very much. Probably less even than it seems even given that some clearly are the same old with new names. The other positive is that they seem unable to learn fast, so they keep repeating the sale old easily dispatched crap. Only occasionally coming up with new ideas. The only 'new' idea I have seen recently [and admittedly I haven't been on for a long while] is the idea that GHG's actually cause cooling not warming. This new absurdity seems to be getting around several forums including YAs. It comes in various guises, the concept of 'back radiation violates the laws of thermodynamics', 'GHGs insulate the earth from solar radiation' etc. Apart from this newish nonsense the rest seems to be same old same old, no fresh lies to be found.

Both of these should tell us that deniers are not the brightest people on the web and that their backers aren't hiring the worlds greatest spin doctors. This is all good news.

I suggest that the denialist camp is loosing some momentum as the real world moves on. The majority of the world is taking warming seriously. Both governments and corporations. The denialists are more and more looking like the nutters that they are.

As an example, I have this year relocated to a new country, from a 'least developed' one that took CC very seriously, to a 'developing' one that is also doing its best. It has introduced tax incentives [cash rebates] for people choosing to buy 'eco cars' [small efficient engines] vs up to 300% tax on bigger less eco cars. I can now get a guaranteed feed in tariff of about US$0.23 [depending on exchange rate] per kWh of solar that I sell to the grid [guaranteed for 25yrs]. Solar farms are all over the place and Hydro is being exploited where ever it makes sense too. The nearby ridges have wind turbines on them because of the good winds in this area.
A massive US$63 billion has just been set massive for upgrading rail building the start of a HSR network and some additional highways [although they will be tollways so should eventually return funds] [actually the country has a fantastic set of highways already]
Coal fired power stations are being converted/replaced by natural gas fired ones, all gasoline/petrol is at least 20% ethanol mix, over 50% of heavy trucks use CNG as do many buses vans and cars [it is less than a third the price of liquid fuels] Many cars also use LPG again much cheaper, and less CO2 per km traveled.
Several major car manufacturers have been invited to produce their electric vehicles here. Nissan already does.

This is not a rich country, nor does it have things like freedom of speech [although not totalitarian] nor is it corruption free [which country is?]. But they are doing what they can. They recognized some 20+ years ago that they had serious ecological problems from over zealous logging and careless attitudes to waste disposal. Now you can not cut a tree without permission, many areas have been re-afforested and the rivers no longer stink. They learned their lesson. Still have problems, serious ones, of course, but at least they are working to address them.

Most important this country is not an exception, it is the norm, so CC is being taken seriously. any country silly enough to isolate itself from taking action will eventually make itself an outcast and probably be sanctioned. The deniers are irrelevant. To a large extent even the significant minority of the 'public' who deny or don't understand are irrelevant. The big decisions that matter are being made by governments and industry. There is serious money in the renewable sector, those who get in early will make the most. Many big corporations see this and are taking action to get a slice. The sheep will follow.

How to get a fair sentencing in the drunk driving accident that killed brother and childhood friend!?

BBallisLif

About a year and a half ago, my brother and a childhood friend were killed in a drunk driving accident by a man whose blood alcohol level was .222. Almost 3 times the legal limit, he also hurt two other people that were in the car with my brother and friend. Well, this man who killed them, has a connection in the courthouse where this happened because his girlfriends step dad is the prosecutor or something, and they appointed the attourney general to be the prosecutor, but we think his connection is still working for him because the probation and parole lady, which we believe must know him because she called and spoke to me and my mother and asked how we felt about it, and she was very forgiving of him, and especially nice about his girlfriend. Also the probation and parole lady recommended 6-8 years? WTF? Anyways, we have until tuesday for the actual sentencing and I was just wondering if there was anything we could do to bring some heat on this. This was a white man who killed my brother and friend who were black, and we know if it was the other way around my brother friend would be up the river by now! He started out pleading not guilty, and had absolutely no remorse, and then he changed lawyers, partially because I think that other lawyer said "youre screwed" and now hes pleading guilty and he tried to say sorry after wards. Well were not going for this. We're going to contact the NAACP, and were trying to think of anyone else we can contact. Hes looking at 44 years altogether and she recommends 6-8? Wow...gotta be atleast 20 years, I mean come on now. Any body have any other ideas...I thought about calling some local news channels.
I know that, however, does that mean he shouldnt spend a significant time in prison, his life should atleast be delayed a little, thrown off, my brother and friends lives are over for good. He should atleast have to put his on hold to go to prison.
I guess you guys are right about the race thing, but I feel like things are just skewed in his favor because it happened where he lives and he has connections there. Also, I get to write a victim impact statement, and I plan to show some pictures of me and my brother, and my friend, and my friend also had 2 kids, so I plan to speak on their behalf also, Im so scared hes gonna walk out on this.
Also who would be going after in the civil suit? The court?

Answer
If I were you, I would enlist as much help from the media in publicizing this as possible. Contact tv stations, newspapers, local media websites, MADD, etc. You should be emphasizing the "good ole boy" contacts in the prosecutors office. I agree with you. The guy deserves at least twenty years. Even then, he's getting a "two-for-one deal" (sorry, not trying to be crass, you know what I mean....)

I agree with the other posters about not playing the race card. That isn't going to help your cause and you don't need to do it. Do not call Al and Jesse....that won't help either. Make sure you write the very best victim impact statement that you are capable of. Get help if need be. Good luck to you and I hope you get justice.

Would you be okay with a TSA checkpoint at the end of your street?

lil' autar

To keep you safe. REALLY REALLY safe.

After all, terrorists can be lurking anywhere?
Hey Ing Soc .... not sure you're getting the point of the question. Would you be okay with it, or not? If you're afraid to think about it, I understand.
So Colonel .... you didn't answer the question either. Would you be okay with a checkpoint at the end of your family's street, or not?
Ok Colonel, thanks for answering.

Answer
Hell no!

WTF is all this, "if you have nothing to hide then what's the problem"...

What's the problem? It's a direct violation of our rights, that's the problem...

Do you have kids, and if you do, how can you not have a problem with them getting groped by some sicko in the name of national security?

Oh no, you must think that any asshole with a badge is automatically a good guy, right?

Do you really think the TSA isn't employing pedophiles and rapists? Given what being a TSA screener entails, I'd imagine that they attract an even higher percentage of sickos than that of local police...

And guess what, TSA screening stations are coming to a highway near you soon...

Is there a technology to run automobiles (cars, trucks etc) on Compressed Air?

Police Off

Answer
" BBC News is reporting that a French company has developed a pollution-free car which runs on compressed air. India's Tata Motors has the car under production and it may be on sale in Europe and India by the end of the year.

The air car, also known as the Mini-CAT or City Cat, can be refueled in minutes from an air compressor at specially equipped gas stations and can go 200 km on a 1.5 euro fill-up -- roughly 125 miles for $3. The top speed will be almost 70 mph and the cost of the vehicle as low as $7000.

The car features a fibreglass body and a revolutionary electrical system and is completely computer-controlled. It is powered by the expansion of compressed air, using no combustion at all, and the exhaust is entirely clean and cool enough for use in the internal air conditioning system. "

What do you think of the cheapest car in the world - $2,500?

Sri

Tata Motors today revealed the cheapest car in the world; it will cost exactly $2,500. Here is the link to the car:

Answer
Would be great for coutries where the cars were generally smaller and traffic moves at a slower pace.

Much to small for the US, tho. Too bad.
