Want to start learning about cars?

Guroo

Im buying my first car tomorrow.(A 2000 mustang v6) And I've been wanting to start learning about cars. Problem is i have no clue where to start. Any advice?

Answer
No1 Buy yourself a book called the Lemonade Book on cars bec it really is a great vehicle owners and car buyers eye opener and has vital info on many vehicles out there, plus always do a check on the Vin number so you know what the vehicles history is and in fact the seller at times will offer it to you or if you ask will supply or purchase one for you even.In fact in my area of Canada it's the sellers duty to buyer to buy the package for the seller and it's the law.

No2 Be sure to keep in mind that it takes at least 5 yrs for any vehicle manufactures to get the bugs out of any vehicles they make therefore don't buy models that haven't been on the market for at least 5 yrs.

No3 Be aware of vehicles that just seem to look too good on the outside or inside or the deal sounds too good bec sometimes sellers will shine a car right up or clean the inside so nice and when you go to open the hood the car looks terribly not kept up and 10 yrs older.
In fact the sellers is trying to make the rest of the vehicle look so nice that you don't pay attention to the things that they don't want you to notice.
But do keep in mind that some ppl only take care of thier vehicle's interior and outside bec all they care about is the appearance.Plus it goes the other way too some take great care in how the over all vehixcle runs and don't care much about the inside or outside of the car much therefore you've got crappy or mid class looking vehicles that maybe running 10 times better then the all dulled up vehicles on the roads too.

No4 Once you've found a vehicle you're interested in then research the yr , model and make , find out what are it's common faults via that book and even place a inquiry online here directed at the people who own and repair them , plus look online at the dealerships sites and look up factory recalls or customer news bulletins etc.Keep in mind that usaully if you see all shiny metals or bolts etc that means work has been done on that part of the vehicle so it be a good idea to have a under the hood pictorial or diagram outlining parts etc so you can compare your notes etc.

No5 When approaching the vehicle glance walk around the vehicle and try to see if you smell any gas etc and look under the car for any possible leaks , once you've test drived it try to park on a dry clean surface and do the check again.Once engine is running again go around the vehhicle to check for leaks or any gas scents , also check the color of the exhaust and it's smell lol.

If the exhaust fumes smell like gas or seem quite thick or dark or black or white get the vehicle fully checked by a mechanic and ask the sellers why the exhaust is like that too.Basically if the fumes smell like gas or smells funny or is all white or black exhaust fumes you could be looking at a basic full tune up or anything from basic to major exhaust work like catalytic converter or o2 sensor or even something as major as a blown gasket or a combination of them etc.

Dress accordinly if possible even bring a blanket with you so you can actually kneel or lay down to look under the vehicle or ask to see it up on a hoist but do this so you can look for rust and leaks etc.

No6 Check the list you made up while looking at the vehicle and don't be shy to ask questions of the seller , like why thier selling it or what did they repair on it , what should be repaired and do they keep any type of service records or history.

No7 Be sure that the major problems you've reasearched have already been repaired and keep a mental and written note on the things that haven't been done too.

No8 Look at the vehicle head to toe and check under the hood for any dark wet or moist marks, almost sometimes looking like muck bec they can be clean signs that oil etc has indeed been leaking or still is leaking.
Once the vehicle is cold started place you hand on the engine and feel for any heavy vibrations , if it has a bit mileage on the engine or needs a basic tune up then it vibtrating is very normal but if you hear any ticking sounds when knowing the oil level is right up especially then that could be the camshaft is worn and engine needs major work. Also keep in mind that dirty or low oil can cause these tapping noises but if knocking sounds then engine is more then likely no good.
Check the oil to see if it's too dark or mucky looking and rub it onto your fingers to see if any particles are in it, do the same with the transmission fluid once the engine is running and you've already shifted the gears once through too.If the oil is thick or mucky or really dark that could mean the vehicle wasn't well maintained , plus if the oil has any roughness in it as you rubbed it , walk away from the vehicle and don't buy a car from that seller ever.If the transmission fluid isn't redish pink or pink or is smelling like cigars be careful bec the transmission might be fried, but keep in mind that it might just need a new filter and transmission fluid .
Check the hoses over to see if any are really soft or look puffy and look for leaks while car is off, plus check the antifreeze for any discolourizations such as having oil in it bec it should be either greenishish or if it uses the new antifreeze it can even be pinkish.
Check the belts with the engine off visaully and also look at the pulleys when the vehicle is off and suddenly started to see if the belts are frayed or jump or wobble, also check the pulleys to see if they wobble or have any leaks along their shafts etc.Later start it up and look again visually , plus once you've given a good test drive look again too.

No9 Look for rusty areas under the hood and corruded wires or battery connectors etc bec those can be signs that the vehicle wasn't well maintained but also they can give you price bargaining chips too.

No10 When you start the vehicle up place your foot hard on the brake and shift from park through the gears see if anything is acting funny or strange , especially funny noises and see if the vehicle jumps or jerks once it's being shifted.Oviouslly if strange metalic grinding noises or noises like that that could be a sign the transmission is faulty , and if the vehicle jerks or jumps sort of that means the transmission mount is faulty.

No11 Have someone start it up and shift through the gears watch to see if the engine rocks or sways back and forth too much bec that is a sign engine mounts need replacing.

No12 Take any vehicle you've decided that you're very interested in to a reliable mechanic and pay the 60.00 or so bucks to give yourself a good solid piece of mind and again another bargaining chip.Plus if the seller won't let you do this especially a car sales agent , or they seem to be pushy or try to rush you as you rightfully check the vehicle over , then my advice be weary , cautious of the seller and walk away.

Hope that helps and best of luck.Oh by the way you know how they always say buyer be aware but if you do your homework it becomes seller be very aware of this smart , wise buyer lol
You know that it's sadly true that certain shops or sellers etc will try to take advantage over women or people that they think don't know anything about whatever their trying to sell them.My sister use to really get upset over that issue bec dealerships even tried to take advantage of her by selling her lemons and she protested against them until they finally came out and agreed to settle the complaints. Then over the yrs she got so frustrated that she learned about vehicles and now she really knows how to spot con artists or rip off shops or the incompitentso called professionals.

In fact it's kind of funny how some shops or vehicle sales people don't like her now lol all bec she's a women and knows what she is talking about when it comes to her vehicles etc.I too have noticed that even though I'm a man some shops etc don't like me bec of me knowing so much about vehicles. But then of course people that are knowledgeable about what their buying etc do piss some people off bec they can't scam them or try to pull wool over their eyes, hence the phrase" buyers be aware" .
Anyways best of luck in finding your vehicle and please keep in mind don't ever be in any rush to buy any vehicle always take your time , be patient and do your homework too lol

Need Help, Exhaust Info Anyone?

Cole

I have a '98 ford Escort ZX2 Sport/Turbo model and I was wondering how much would it cost to put a straight pipe on it to make it really loud. And if anyone knows what kind of engine chip could increase hp and for how much?

Answer
there is a web site that will sell you a chip, just enter performance chips for?as far as the exhaust, you still need a muffler and a cat.but if they make one,you want flow masters for exhaust, and K.&.N.for cold air intake.to help performance by increasing the exhaust, you must also in crease the intake side,as in the cold air.i don't know if they offer these products for your car.go to their web sites and get the information you need.

Anyone know for what car model and year this manifold belongs to? Limited info.?

L. P.

Only information I have is what is printed on the "manfold" itself.
Firing Order 18436572
#3832472 GM
Someone told me its a manifold and it matches pictures, but What car model and year is it? All i know it is really old... possibly in the 1960s?

I recieved this part from an old friend who rebuilds corvettes, so maybe a corvette manifold?

Answer
It sounds like an intake manifold for a Chevy 350. The manifold should work on any pre fuel injected 350's and some fuel injected models. They were all made the same until the late 80's.

I did a search of Ebay for pictures and found these...

Does your's look like these?

car needs ECU after tune up/oil change/fuel filter change?

keruptcorr

I keep reading that ECUs are not interchangable but how do I found out which one I need (95 mitsu eclipse 2.0 DOHC) I am having MORE work done to my car, but I am still deciding if it is worth doing for I am already in for $443 for work done w/towing and would rather not shell out another $200 (estimated)

From the little info I have seen there are three choices for my engine but I havent a clue if all three will plug in but have a 33% chance of having it be the correct one. I am trying to become informed on the repairs and want more knowledge before I tell the mechanic to proceed with the repairs. I would hate to find out he replaced the ECU with one that will do the job for a small amount of time.

I am hoping for reassurance that ONLY the correct ECU will fit and start my car. Thanks in advance to any and all the take the time to reply

Answer
It's true ECUs are not interchangeable, but that should not mean you'll have trouble finding it, because there should be only one choice for your car, model and engine. It might depend on which Eclipse you have, i.e. GS, GST, GSX, or RS. I suggest going to www.rockauto.com. Then just select your car, etc..., and under the electrical category, go to the engine control module (computer). They list the choices there, as well as the OEM model #. Look at the number on yours, and the one that matches is the correct one.

On another note... Some details of your story seem to be missing, but it sounds like a typical sheisty mechanic to me... You bring it in, have some work done, and with your car at the mercy of being towed, they tell you you need this and that expensive crap too or your car's gonna blow, etc...

Some important information is missing here though... Like why was the car being brought in for a tune-up? Tune up stuff like plugs, wires, filters, etc... are good to do when needed, but they are not the cause of stranding you, just poor performance/efficiency. I'm assuming that somehow it's been explained to you that the ECU is what stranded you...and yeah that could be, but I'd wonder how that was determined...and if the problem was the ECU, then why was the tune up stuff done?

Another thing...you are trying to figure out which ECU is usable, but you're afraid of the mechanic putting in one which won't last? I don't know if you plan on doing just that part yourself....but either way, if the mechanic doesn't know which ECU to get, then he/she's sure out to lunch, and someone who would never see my car again. If you're thinking of perusing the salvage yards, then again, there should be a model # on the ECU itself, and if that's the same, it's the same unit. But again, you said your main purpose is reassurance that only the correct ECU will fit and start your car... That's true, but it shouldn't be relevant. There is no benefit to trying to find a different-than-original ECU, unless you found a cheap one on ebay or something.

Must I flash a used ECU to put in my car?

froggerz29

I have an 06 Chevy Cobalt with a used engine from another 06 Chevy Cobalt. i got an ECU from a third Cobalt same make and model and engine. Do i have to have it flashed for it to work? or will it run without it being flashed? will there be anything wonky if it does run without being flashed?

Answer
per manual, it needs to be programed. for maint intervals at least.

for info on R&R procedures,
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/repairinfo/repairguide/repairGuideContent.jsp?pageId=0996b43f80cb164a#hd1-1-2

couple things though, after it's programmed.
the computer would, on it's own, after a given amount of start/stop cycles, use that info to establish a new base line for best monitoring engine functions.
those first few start/stop cycles, usually need hwy speeds included in that processs. also no aggressive driving during that time as well.

not a chevy guy, but two to three start/stop cycles at most should do it.

Spiritually speaking is there any Sunami Warnings anywhere near Cochin.. ?

jayakrishn

The reason for me asking this is something like here in Palluruthy in Cochin, Kerala, there seems to be some peculiarity within the Atmosphere with some kind of a dry feeling .. Motor no more pumping water from underground today .. Local Kerala Vision Channel says, Ocean going back about 30 meters today in TV .. Toilets sucking in the Water that usually do not happen during rainy times like this .. When I was thinking about in which route I should try taking the car if some calamity happens, then immediately Maruthi Car Service people from Edappally simply calling just to confirm the address that they already have, not for any Service Call or any other reason .. My Brother in law calling and telling to hold, going out on a deal .. Few other ones devotted to some Organised Structures leaving the Place Palluruthy today morning .. When all things associated together along with the 30 meter withdrawel news of Arabian Sea, could there be some Gudha Samkhyam aspects of Nature for some kind of planned Sunami .. especially since I wrote a caption on this pic in Yahoo Caption Contest ..

http://in.news.yahoo.com/caption-this--35.html

Not for any panicking or something .. Spiritually speaking, Could there be some planned agenda of Nature in all these things .. specially this water being sucked in by some force and a special kind of dry feeling with weather that seems to be prevailing now in Palluruthy ..

Anyway I just mentioned some of the symptoms that I am feeling at Home today .. Maybe the Authorities in Control needs to analyse better if they want to give out some warnings ..

By the way, this is another profile of mine .. that I made in my Father's care off .. since I thought revealing some of the extra profiles that I created myself .. I don't know whether the New IT laws allow creating such multiple ids by the same person, perhaps in different care-offs ..

http://answers.yahoo.com/activity?show=hJHrcaL9aa

These are just some rands, need not be connected with Actual happenings, but then some caution with an Udgitha seems okay especially with the water withdrawel symptoms ..

But I would really like to know Spiritually whether there are some Sunami Warnings .. Off late, I have some strange feelings that sometimes, some of these calamities could be Man Made too, sometimes even using some kind of powerful Vacuuming methods ..

What are your thoughts .. ?? ..
I was just pondering about the Spiritual aspects of Water Withdrawels that's happening at my place along with the news on a local channel about the withdrawel of Sea for about 30 meters .. just added some of the coincidences too .. I know Scientific Post - Mortems mostly happen after the incidents, but I was just wondering about, whether there are some pro-active Spiritual aspects regarding this withdrawel of Sea .. maybe I just tried to observe some Samkhyam aspects too along with the some of the coincidents too ..

.. need not mean some Sunami, but just observing how might things turn out to be in the next few days or so with the peculiarities of Nature .. I was thinking whether there could be some lighter aspects happening in the coming up few days, perhaps like Car Break Downs or Deal Break Downs or Some other Break Downs or something else .. Otherwise why should Sea be withdrawing .. ?? .. I don't know whether Science might be able to give some answers on this Sea Withdrawel Effect .. but then it could be interesting to observe some of these coincidences ..

Some say, the Sea Withdrawel is happening from Chettuva to Kodungalloor .. maybe the borewell at our home also might have got sucked in because of this Sea Withdrawel.. perhaps more findings and news once the plumbing technician arrives ..

Answer
You are merely telling your own story or are you asking question ?

If you are asking some Sunami warning ? normally it will be preceded by an earth quake of high reading on the scale (more than 6 or 7). But still there is no guarantee of this.

Teaching in the UAE - pros and cons?

launcue

I am looking to teach English in the UAE and trying to find some information about life there. I have listed some info about me and then my questions below. Thanks for any information you can provide!

My info: I am an American currently living in Seoul, South Korea. I have a Masters in Education with distinction - TESOL. 6 years teaching experience. 2 - Elementary teacher, 2 - curriculum developer, 2 - Teacher Trainer - In Seoul, South Korea. I have no dependents (but I do have a dog). I am NOT a drinker so I know that it is a dry country so no worries there.

questions:

1. What are the pros and cons of living in the UAE? besides alcohol

2. Do you know anything about having pets there?

3. What is the standard pay for a university professor of English language?

4. What are the standard vacations? 2 months? and when?

5. Any areas to avoid or aim for?

6. Do I need a car?

7. Do most teachers live in "compounds"? If so, what does that mean exactly?

8. How much do you need to live on? I am not really a cook so I eat out a lot.

9. Any tips for finding good jobs or questions to ask at the interview?

10. LAST QUESTION - Is travel cheap?

Thanks again for your time and answers!

Answer
I've tried to answer some of your questions, because I know answers to those.

1. What are the pros and cons of living in the UAE?
The biggest plus is "No Income Tax". Other pros are: Almost zero crime rate; Modern excellent infrastructure like the Metro and expressways; cosmopolitan city, since there are nationals from over 200 countries here (like New York); International cuisine available to suit every taste. In my opinion, the only con is the temperature (phew!)...

2. Do you know anything about having pets there?
You can have a pet, but you need to get the pet registered, with a government authority alongwith proof of all vaccinations and stuff, and probably they give a collar to be placed around the dog's neck, for identification. (choke!)

3. What is the standard pay for a university professor of English language?
I've gone through your profile, and as a rough estimate, you could earn in the region of AED 30K - 40K a month.

4. What are the standard vacations? 2 months? and when?
NA

5. Any areas to avoid or aim for?
NA

6. Do I need a car?
Fuel is really cheap, so it depends upon the distance you have to travel everyday. However, now there is the Metro too. So you can dump the car for public transport.

7. Do most teachers live in "compounds"? If so, what does that mean exactly?
NA

8. How much do you need to live on? I am not really a cook so I eat out a lot.
If your package includes rent, or atleast partial rent, then food should not cost a bomb. You'll end up saving a good amount.

9. Any tips for finding good jobs or questions to ask at the interview?
http://dubai-forever.com/jobs-in-dubai.html

10. LAST QUESTION - Is travel cheap?
The Metro, the bus transport, and the taxi cabs are pretty cheap.

Hope this answers some of your queries.

Info about temprory license in Dubai and is it for ages 17+?

Steevo

is it true there's something called permenent license for ahges 17+ and what makes it diffrent from the normal license and where can i get it????

Answer
IT"S POSSIBLE THE ISSUANCE OF TEMPORARY DRIVING LICENSES IN DUBAI HAS BEEN SUSPENDED. UNCONFIRMED REPORTS SURFACED IN DEC. 2006. UNKNOWN IF CORRECT OR FOR HOW LONG!

A temporary driving license is issued if you want to drive a private car in Dubai but don't have a residency visa to be able to obtain a full UAE driving license eg. visitors on visit visas, expats waiting for residence visa processing. You obtain it from the police station and it's valid for 6 months.

Bring:
Your home country passport, driving license and copies, copy of whatever visa you have for the UAE (or passport if it's stamped, or e-gate card if not)
Intl. Driving permit from the same country as your license (if you don't have one, try and obtain a temporary license anyway, unknown how essential this is)

Note that if you want to drive a rental car, you don't need to apply for a temporary license. Just go to the rental car agency with your home country driving license.

what would win in a race around circle track? porsche vs BMW?

mma=life

so my dad owns a 1987 porsche carrera that at stock with new axel and a redone engine runs 205hp and weighs 2400 pounds curb weight.it has proformance tires on it. my friend who owns a 2008 BMWm3 thinks he can demolish my dads porsche in a circular track race. who is right?
are you joking the m3 weighs 3500 pounds curb weight and the porsche has a tighter suspension for faster corners....i say it would be close at the strait away but bmw would be ahead by a bit but back to the corners the porsche would dominate it

Answer
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news: The M3 would enjoy a massive advantage over the older Porsche. A Stock 3.2L Carrera is about the same or slightly faster than an E36 M3, and the M3s since then are much faster than that. And I think you are underestimating how much the Porsche weighs (should be closer to 2800 pounds for a 3.2L Coupe with the G50... more for a Targa or Cabriolet - I race in older 911s and regularly instruct for PCA and am very familar with the 3.2s)... but regardless, it wouldn't be close.

Given a good enough driver, on a road course like Laguna Seca, the Porsche on street tires could be capable of nudging under 2:00 per lap. The newer M3 would be ~15 seconds a lap quicker (it'd lap the Porsche even in a 20 lap sprint race with ease)... ,maybe even a little more. Even in the corners, the M3 will be better - while heavier, the suspension is 20+ years newer, and not based on what was a compromised design that originates in 1963 (as does the basic torsion bar design of the '87 911).

Around an oval, it would be even bleaker, because the one advantage the Porsche would have on the M3 would be related to the lighter weight. Taking transient handling and braking out of the equation (both of which would be highly effected by the M3's greater weight), the M3 would run away.

On a road course, the Porsche could compete with the stock M3 under the following conditions: moving up to 7" and 9" lightweight race rims, front brake ducts, adjustable anti-roll bars and dampers that are at least as stiff as the optional sports package of that era, and Hoosiers or similar R-comp tires; early 911 headers and something similar to the early factory sports exhaust would help the engine breath better, and a brake bias valve to put more to the rear (and an LSD if the car is not already so equipped). And then just get a couple hundred pounds of weight off the car! This would help the 911 regain what it would be losing in the corners, and regain it's straightline losses under braking (especially as the laps added up). That would make it close... at least until the M3 put on sticky tires and again ran away into the distance.

And around an oval, given the difference in top speed between the two cars, there wouldn't be anything short of an engine swap and change of gearing you could do to the older Porsche to get it on pace with the newer M3.

The only likely scenario where the Porsche is faster is if the skill levels of the drivers are vastly different... a fast, skilled driver in the Porsche would easily lap faster than a novice in the BMW (then again, a skilled driver in an old Miata will lap faster than a novice in a race prepped Ferrari).

where may i get a car salvage site in india?

ajy_tripat

Answer
Demolition, Scrap Metal and Salvage News provides info on car salvage prices in india

Why don't they make afordable cars for lower income people?

Zenkai

Why doesn't the big 3 do this? I asked this question a month ago and got a lot of hate replies saying how it's impossible (and I know it isn't) and boom India does it first!

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20090323/ts_afp/indiacompanyautotata_20090323144905

So my question stands why does the big 3 feel they need to sell something that cost half the price of an average home and loses values every year and has a lot of maintenance. Why would anyone buy an overpriced new car just to get them from point A to B?

Answer
Well we do have some cheaper cars here (like smart cars).

http://www.smartusa.com/

BUT...while smart cars are similar to the ones made in India (only more expensive) people have stopped buying them. Since gas prices have dropped no one wants them anymore and a lot of people are canceling their orders (on that $99 reservation thing on the website).

http://www.myfoxchicago.com/dpp/news/dpgo_Economy_Gas_Prices_Orphaning_Smart_Cars_SAB_032420092310329

Basically, unless a ton of people are going to buy these cars, no one is going to make them, and the poorest families probably can't afford ANY type of new car. So until we make super cheap cars like those in India, it isn't going to work, and even if we did that I'm not sure they would be too popular in this country. Those types of cars just don't appeal to most Americans.

Are my thoughts on buying a 1 or 2 year old car wrong?

Ryan

Everyone says don't buy new. The joke is you buy and new car, drive it round the block to sell it 5 minutes later and it will be worth $5,000 less.

Cause that $5,000 is in owner profits, dealer commissions, and fees a new car dealership adds on. Like delivery fee, keys fee ($120 now-a-days) inspection fees, ect

Instead buy a 1 or 2 year old car to avoid all the fees and dealer costs.

But my thoughts have always been a new car has to be broken in in the first 3 to 12 months. And you just don't know if the previous owner did that.

Was the owner hard on the breaks? Was he drag racing the car the first night? Did he ride it hard and put it away wet??? You just don't know.

I say if a guy knows he is going to buy a new car every two years he is not going to break the car in properly.

Yes you can go to Show me the car facts and stuff like that.

But should I just stop thinking this way and buy a 1 or 2 year old car???

Answer

===

Hate to break the news to you, but car dealers make MORE on used cars than new cars. They can add the same fees, for the most part, to used cars.

Profit margins are really slim on new cars, so if that is the rationale, then it's wrong.

If you don't trade in often to where you need to make up some negative equity, get a new car.

The used car market is so jacked up pricewise, that it's not always better to buy used.

I certainly like the '08 F150 I went birthday shopping for over the summer, but two more years of the same payment to get a warranty and 105 more horsepower from a 5.0L may not have been such a bad idea by buying a '13 model F150. Besides, F150s hold their value, so depreciation would be nearly irrelevant even if I was the type to trade in often.

I'm not really complaining because I like my truck over some of the things I can pick on the newer ones about, but it is worth doodling over in the free time...especially when I hear deals on the radio for $18k 2013 F150 XLT 5.0L SuperCabs. Just something to think about, though the need for a second SCab wasn't there. Deprecation on a deal like that? Whatever.

What is the best car insurance company in North Carolina?

Eric

Hi. So I recently moved from New England to North Carolina. I have my 2002 Toyota Camry. It was my Dad's and is still under his name. However, I want to get the title in my name hopefully by early 2014. That means paying for insurance too. I figure I'm going to have to do this soon, might as well do it now and learn more responsibility.

My parents are paying for my car and their cars under MetLife. (Yes, the one with the Snoopy logo). They are paying about the same plan they did in Massachusetts. I know North Carolina has more competition in pricing and I want to shop around for a decent plan that gives me what I need but for a better price. My Mom is hysterical and doesn't want me to go anywhere else because she think NC insurance is crap.

I like that MetLife gives me what I need but I'm not paying more than I have to in insurance. Sorry Mom.

So my question is. What is the best car insurance company in North Carolina? Any suggestions. I would like a company that offers affordable plans but also is a reliable company when I need them. Please NO cheapo discount insurance.

Here are my only two liabilities in my driving history:
1. Got into a minor car accident in October of 2011. Just a paint smear with another car. Nobody was hurt and neither car got in worse performance condition.
2. Got a seatbelt violation ticket in January 2013. (It was actually for speeding but the cop went easy probably because he saw I was wearing a suit. I was on my way to a family memorial service near the South Boston area.)

Any experiences?

I mean, what is my Mom worried about? I never hear in the news about people dying because they have NC car insurance. I know there is cut rate (bad) insurance out there because of competition. But there's got to be something better in NC than paying a Taxachuetts MetLife plan. (Sorry BayStaters, but you know it's true)

Thank you!

Answer
There is no such company. The best insurance company for one person may be the worst for the next person. Simply get several quotes and then choose the best quote for you.
You are just wasting your time asking this question. It cannot be answered.

Happy shopping

Buying a First Car?

Q. Hry my friend is buying her first car and she can't decide what to get. Frankly I'm getting quite annoyed because she never stops talking about it. So I thought I'd help her out.
She's 16, her parents won't let her get a coupe or sports car because they are too much on insurance, and her price limit is $8,100.
She lives in Missouri.

Any suggestions? Thanks
Sorry misspelled the first word.
Hey*

Answer
Go to autotrader.com and put in your maximum purchase amount, a zipcode and how many miles away from that zipcode you're willing to look for a car and voila... your search begins.

From what I've seen on there, for $8,000 you may be able to get a 3-5 year old vehicle but it's probably going to have 70,000-100,000 miles on it.

I also have news for her...at 16 if she isn't able to get secondary car insurance under her parents' car insurance policy (and instead has to go it on her own) no matter what car she gets (sports car or not)... her car insurance won't be cheap.

When I was 20 I was driving around a 1-year old 4-door Cavalier and I was paying $3,000.00/year for car insurance with a clean record (more then the car payment itself). Now that was when I was younger and lived in Canada and I have noticed since moving here to the U.S. that car insurance seems to be a bit cheaper... however... the reality is that young drivers pay high(er) car insurance rates. Get a ticket or get in an accident and the situation goes from bad to even worse.

What tragic F1 accident shaped your life?

carpediem6

Given the fact that the last fatality in F1 is Ayrton Senna back in 1994, I already assume Senna's crash will probably lead the way in the answers. But I would like to see if anyone is "old enough" to go back in time and reflect on what shocked them in the years prior to Senna's death.

Among the ones I witnessed live on TV during the years, I can say Tom Pryce's freak accident in 1977 was the one that is still embedded in my memory, more than others.
ADD: Julian, that thing is like professional fireworks on wheels. In the U.S. they should use that footage during the 4th of July celebrations.

Ivor, somehow we need more explanations on your injury

Answer
Niki Lauda's at the Nurburgring 1976. To be honest I don't remember if I watched it live on TV, or if I seen it on the news that night, I started watching F1 at about 5 years old (that gives my age away!) so it might have been live, I can remember seeing the car in flames and other drivers trying to get him out, It was a combination of tragedy and heroism that I had probably never seen before. It may well be the moment that I became fascinated with F1, and I always had a soft spot for Lauda and Ferrari after that.
Edit, How is the little Todger Ivor? lol

Although most of them may try to sale the cars, you can ask them about the information too.

There are also many "pieces" of info around the web, you need some times to gather them together like puzzle.

Good luck.

What do you do if you are selling your vehicle and cannot provide proof that the loan was paid off?

Kelly R

I did not know you needed proof to sell since a lender is listed on the title and threw it all out. I am trying to contact the lender without any luck.
I believe that I have always had the title in my possession but an auto loan lender is listed on there showing a lien and also on title is just has a note too that says proof that the loan has been paid off is required when selling the vehicle. Now if I am selling to people I know who trust my word is that good enough or do you think the Sec. of State will require proof before they allow the sale? I guess that there are probably some people out there who could sell the car and then there would be nothing to repo if they defaulted. It just never occurred to me to save proof of payoff : ( It was over 2 years ago so I tossed them.

Answer
When you pay a car off, one of two things occur.
1. The lender tells the DMV the loan was paid and provides you with a "clean" title or
2. The lender gives you the title with their signature, stamp and notary showing the loan has been satisfied. Then YOU need to tell the DMV and apply for a "clean" title.

Someone needs to tell the DMV. You or the Lender. It doesn't matter who. But as far as the DMV records show, you still have a lien. Right now only you know and the lender know. In fact your registration probably also shows the lien holders name, right?

If the lender went out of business, the DMV or AAA Auto Club have a list of financial "bought out" instiutions. They can give you the new company name and address. you can call (800) 932-9980 x5557 for the info.

if your lender is still in existance, then contac them and ask for a REG 166 lien release form. But the lender probably has their own version that will be accepted by the DMV.

Then apply for Duplicate Title with form REG 227

Titles are very important to keep safe. Like your underware drawer or a safety deposit box.

If you have a buyer and can't wait for a new clean title, then begin the process of transfer by using the REG 227, and REG 262. go to the DMV/AAA with buyer and they will "RDF" for lien release. Meaning the transfer will not be complete until the lien release is turned in. But at least you get the money and the buyer gets a registration in their name while we all wait.

Don't forget to sign a Release of Liability with in 5 days of selling a car. (And in CA the seller must get the car smogged which is good for 90 days)

talladega infield camping?

Scott H

Can someone point me to some good information on Camping with a tent on the infield at Talladega. Bought tickets last night and this is the first time going there.
Hey Chuck what do you mean by

Ditch the tickets you bought and get the Miller infield Special seating. comes with a pit row preview, catered, booze, and TV's.

Answer
The best thing you can do is call the track, they know all the options and prices. Talladega has a really cool interactive track map so you can see the view from your spot.
I was there last Oct. and ALL CAMPING in the infield is now reserved. But I think I saw some tents over in 3 and 4 .
they are real strict about infield activities now.
I did not go outside so you'll have to follow the above guys for that.

If you have never camped at a Nascar race before......I hope you like people and BRING ANYTHING YOU MAY NEED the FIRST TRIP. Bring it from home, don't wait until SAT nite to decide you need to go to the store. (i paid 20 bucks for a 12 pack of Coke. no bull, the girlfriend has to have it so.....)
Buy the local paper each day, it has all the info you need on activities around town.
Bring your own toilet paper.
Bring water in gallons so you can sponge bath if you have to.
Go in with the campers next to you and rent your own port o let. it's like 80? for the weekend and they will service some too. (lock it at nite with a chain.)
You can roam around on foot all you want, but not in a car.....
buy a plastic pass holder for your infield passes.
Ditch the tickets you bought and get the Miller infield Special seating. comes with a pit row preview, catered, booze, and TV's. I went back to the trailer to watch the race, but hte pit row access was cool.

Thursday edit:
The Miller Special seating I mentioned is named the Miller Paddock Club (I tihk) if you look at this track map http://www.talladegasuperspeedway.com/documents/tss_2007_facility.pdf

Then look right at the victory lane circle, you can see the Paddock Club left of it.
I sat there in Fall 06 and it was fun. Viewing of the track was VERY limited, but it had TV's and the prerace pit pass, plus you get a parking pass to park right behind the paddaock club. So on race day you just zip into the infield and park 50 ft. from your seats.
Also on the track map I gave you you can see Tents are allowed in some sections.

The Paddock club passes where expensive, but my friend Jerry had cancer so it was the best choice for us. NO LINES.

At Talledega you can't see from turn to turn on raceday, even with binoculars it's hard to see the opposite turns. You can see the turn you are camped in, it's elevated so your perfect there.
In/out access used to be very limited, as the Rv's and stuff had to cross the track to get in.

Since you have tickets, I think you should camp outside.
Try to get on the same side as your seats, you don't want to walk 4 miles lugging a cooler, and at Talledega that is conservative mileage.

Do you think Anne Curtis have to react on her present situation?

delive_ran

Her recent incident that according to the news her right breast accidentally expose to the public because of her rehearsal of a dance sequence on the show ASAP. I forgot the year when the paparazzi photograph Britney Spears exposing her vagina and was literally the items on the internet. One friend even email me the shot by shot photo of Britney getting down on the car of her friend Paris Hilton, she is not wearing a bikini or even a panty. She didn't react nor give a hoot on the issue and it died down automatically. Besides it is only a photo, just merely reading a Hustler or even a Playboy magazine. But these are famous personality. Compared to Americans and Filipinos. Filipinos are more troublesome compared to Americans. Britney Spears didn't react nor complain to the media about it nor give a damn about all the photo. Parang sinasabi pa niya "gusto ninyo pa?" What some more photo's? To them ari or suso is nothing to them but why when it comes to Pinoy's its a different story. Because we are the original Maria Clara image? But where is that right now, when you watch wowowee and the girls start to dance wild I don't remember Maria anymore do you? Iba ba talaga concept ng babaeng Americans or European compared to us Filipinos? Just a thought. What do you think?

Answer
You have a lot of questions in that one post, so I'll try to sum up my opinion and make it as short as possible:

The Philippines is a lot more conservative than the US. Sure, we have the dancing Wowowee girls and the Filipinas on FHM, but overall, our media is not heavy on sex and promiscuity the way North American media is. I don't think it's fair to compare Anne Curtis to Britney Spears either. The latter made most of her career by being an infamous global sex symbol. From her music videos to her album covers, what haven't we seen from Britney? And if I recall correctly, this incident occurred while she was in the midst of having her mental breakdown (shaved head, anyone?) so it really wasn't as shocking as it ought to have been. Anne Curtis, on the other hand, is much classier imho. Although she does rely on her looks as an actress, she doesn't sell sex the way that or as much as her US counterparts do.

And to be honest, things like these are personal. If Britney doesn't care that pictures of her bare crotch are everywhere, then good for her. But that doesn't mean that other women in the world wouldn't care. Both these personalities rely on their public image to make money. It just so happens that for one of them, crotch flashes just enhance the image, but for the other, pictures like these could eventually kill it. It's Anne's breast anyway. If she wants to talk about it, who's going to stop her?

I agree with you though about the Filipinos who are posting this stuff up. It isn't right to post up pictures of someone's bits as if they're ads for the newest Pure Foods meat product. I liked what Sam Milby said in the news broadcast that went something like "What if it was your mom or your sister?" Kahit na sikat sila (ang mga artista), tao pa rin naman sila eh. Minsan nahihiya at minsan nagkamali. Kaya sana naman maiintindihan ng mga tao na hindi naman 'to that big of a deal in the first place.

For your personal opinion, was Ivan Padilla killed or otherwise?

delive_ran

For those who do not know Ivan Padilla, he is the head of the notorious group of car jackets who was recently gun down by the NCR anti-carnapping
squad headed by Col. Manalo(02 Aug). There was partly a video tape of Ivan inside a vehicle belonging to the police after the incident. Interviewed by a news station before they left for the hospital. Ivan is still alive. He was pronounce DOA. Autopsy report he died of asphysia. I know some of you don't care, it is just for your opinion, for me he was killed literally on the way to the hospital either by a cord or a hand choke. Para sa mga pulis papatayin din lamang bakit hindi pa sa shoot out which more legitimate than appearing to relieve the guy to the hospital and finding him dead. Magkakaruon pa ng issue at innuendo sa mga tao. To me these people deserve to die, they are considered menace to society or in Tagalog "salot ng lipunan". But not in the manner that bring us to become savage. What do you think?

Answer
"DEAD MAN TELL NO TALES"

Think about this: Everytime there is a shoot-out between the police/NBI and notorious criminals (car jackers; kidnappers; bank robbers; hold-uppers; akyat bahay), the leader always ends up DEAD!
Why? Their connections or financiers or handlers from the authorities will be singled out if he will be left alive.

Ivan Padilla was strangled to death with strong bare hands or arm while he was being "rushed" to the hospital. According to forensic expert, Dr. Fortun, the bones that support his tongue were broken due to some pressure of a thing. The one who did this is an expert on this job. The wounds on his head were only superficial and Ivan can survive this.

Watch out for the bulky man wearing sando who rode with Ivan during the time he was taken to the hospital!

Car lease early termination fee?

Kempa

What is the cost of a early turn in fee if you cant afford your lease through GMAC anymore? and what is the process for turning it in, do you just take it there and say "here it is i cant afford it anymore" and they send you a bill?

Answer
You are still liable for the rest of the payments owed on your lease. if you can't afford the car anymore, call GMAC and let them know. And tell them which dealership you're returning the car to so they can pick it up.

GMAC will first try to get the unpaid balance from you. if they're not successful, they'll send it to collections. If the collection company cannot get that from you, they'll either write it off as a bad debt, which will piggy-back on top of your repo, or if it's a significant amount, take legal action against you.

A bad debt and a repo will kill your credit history for 7 to 10 years. A lawsuit can last even longer. Before you give the car back, ask yourself if it's truly unaffordable. Or if you cut back on monthly expenses, could you still make those payments?

A voluntary or a forced repo has the same, long term damaging effect on your credit rating. Before either one happens, be sure you've exhausted every possibility to make your payments. If you decide to ride it out and if you're going to be late, call GMAC and let them know. They'll allow a one time late pay without reporting it. But don't make it a habit.

If there is no way out, call GMAC, let them know you'll drop it off at a certain dealer at a certain time. They can then notify the dealer to be watching for it. Drop off the keys to the sales manager, not a salesman. Be sure you have both sets of keys with remotes and all the books to turn back in.

Then prepare for the bad news in form of a letter from GMAC.

Can I change a car lease that is in my dads name to my name?

Q. Back in January, my parents leased me and car and it is currently in my dads name. I got in a huge fight with them and they are trying to take back my car before the lease is up. Is there anyway that I can get the lease in my name so this doesn't happen? I am 25 with decent credit

Answer
I hate to say this, but it is not your car. You have absolutely no legal rights to this vehicle. If they want it back, there is nothing you can do about it.

There is no way to transfer a loan (or a lease). Your parents would have to sell you the car (for the total of the remaining payments, plus the residual value of the vehicle). If you cannot pay cash, you would have to apply for a loan, and be approved.

Sorry I don't have better news.

did john cena die in a car crash?

Linda

it was all over the computer that john cena passed away in a car accident

Answer
No, John Cena is not dead.

'Global News Associated' is a cover for the 'Fake a Wish' website and this website is the original source for the majority of the fake death reports of celebrities you have heard about lately. It's almost a daily occurrence because anyone can post a fake death report and within minutes it's all over Twitter, Facebook, et al. The website is nothing more than a fake news/hoax generator.

Is there a app for the ipod 4th gen to connect to the radio?

Hunter F

i know there are certain cords you can buy to plug into your car and i know there is a wireless one for your car.but i want to know if there as a app i could use with my stereo kinda like the wireless adapter can do it to cars and radios,PLEASE HELP!

Answer
http://www.shopper-deals.info/shop.php?k=ipod+4+radio&c=all

I bought this iTrip product for use with an iPhone 3GS. I am familiar with the limitations of FM transmitters and have purchased various models over the years including Griffin iTrip predescessors and have had decent success (particular units like Griffin that allow you to set the FM station to below 88.1 using Europe settings).

This unit is seriously flawed. First of all, even though it indicates that it is iPhone (3G/3GS) compatible, the iPhone displays an error message that the iTrip is not compatible with the iPhone. Apparently this is due to lack of certification from Apple.

Ignoring this problem, I was unable to get the FM transmitter to work on a clear station. The unit charges the iPhone fine. I tried several station, including 87.9, several cars, and several devices (iTouch, old iPod), etc. I contacted Griffin and they sent me a replacement unit.

The replacement unit faired a little better. I was able to get it to work in one car.

What are the Best iPhone apps?

xx_kissez_

I got my iPhone 4 a few weeks ago and I'm bored of all the same apps, what are the best free apps available? Useful or not useful it doesn't really matter, I just want to make the moat of my phone.

Answer
The list

1. Google Voice

Google Voice is a service that is so useful I consider it one of the top benefits of Android itself, especially since Apple rejected the Google Voice app for the iPhone. It gives you a phone number that can ring to multiple places or devices and it allows you to access all of your voicemail and text messages over the Web. The Android app integrates even deeper. It can make outgoing calls look like theyâre coming from your Google Voice number so that you can keep your real mobile number private.

2. Advanced Task Killer

One of the realities of having a multitasking mobile OS in Android is that you have to manage your apps so that they donât hurt performance or battery life. Advanced Task Killer (or ATK) is my favorite. It even comes with a widget that you can tap once to kill all open apps.

3. Dropbox

Dropbox is a great cloud service that automatically syncs a folder of files between multiple computers (Windows, Mac, or Linux). This app extends Dropbox to Android and interacts with other apps (such as Documents To Go) to open the files.

4. Evernote

Once you get used to typing on a virtual keyboard (and it honestly took me over a year to do it), then these devices are great for note-taking, and Evernote is a great note-taking app. It is similar to Dropbox in that it saves data locally but syncs it across all your machines and devices.

5. DroidAnalytics

For some reason Google doesnât have an official app (for either Android or iPhone) for Google Analytics. The best one Iâve found on Android is DroidAnalytics. Another good one is mAnalytics.

6. Documents To Go

The free version of Documents To Go offers a great little reader for Word and Excel files. You can upgrade to the full version (for $15) if you want to edit files and add PowerPoint files to the mix. If you do want editing capability, Iâd also recommend taking a look at QuickOffice.

7. Amazon Kindle

I never warmed up to the Amazon Kindle e-reader, but Iâm a big fan of the Kindle mobile app. Since it was released Iâve read a lot more books simply because my smartphone is always with me and I can pull it and read a few pages anytime Iâve got a couple minutes free.

8. Places Directory

This is an awesome app for finding shops and services near your current location. From restaurants to movie theaters to medical facilities to taxis, this app is very accurate and takes advantage of the business information from Google Local. This app is better than the info you get from a GPS unit (or app) and better than any of the similar apps available on the iPhone.

9. Tripit

I dig Tripit. It is by far the best app Iâve found for keeping track of all my travel itineraries. It runs on some great backend systems. You simply forward your confirmation emails for your flights, hotels, rental cars, and more to Tripit and it automatically organizes them into trips with all your details and confirmation numbers.

10. Seesmic

Twitter is an amazing instant-intelligence engine and it was made for mobile browsing. Although thereâs an official Twitter app for Android now, Seesmic is still the best Android Twitter client.

11. FCC Speedtest

Iâm obsessed with running speed tests to check my bandwidth in various places, both to see 3G fluctuations and to check the quality of Wi-Fi. There are a number of really good speedtest apps, but my new favorite is the FCC Test app.

12. Astro File Manager

Another one of the great things about Android (if youâre a geek or a tinkerer) is that you have lower-level access to the system itself. Astro is an app that lets you navigate the Android file system.

13. Got To Do

There are plenty of to-do apps to choose from on Android but I prefer Got To Do because of the solid interface and the fact that it can sync with the online service Toodledo.

14. Gist

Many of us have contact lists scattered across various computers, devices, and online services. Gist is a Web service that can bring them together and even pull in stuff from the Web to help you stay up to date with your most important contacts. Thereâs an Android app as well as an iPhone app.

15. TED Mobile

TED is a fascinating event that features a meeting of the minds of some of societyâs most influential thinkers. Youâll definitely disagree with some of them, because thereâs a large diversity of opinions, but many talks are worth listening to. What I love is that theyâve taken the videos from their conference and made them freely available on the Web. This app provides a great way to access the videos. I hope more conferences follow TEDâs lead on this.

Has Toyota released any news/drawings of 2010 Prius?

synergyman

any links would be fine, i just want to see what it will look like (curious). Would you buy one now (cuz of the gas prices), willingly?

Answer
Toyota has announced that they'll be offering for fleet sales (not retail/general public) a PHEV Prius in 2010.

Photos of test vehicles: http://pressroom.toyota.com/?page=images&criteria=phev+prius
more info:
http://pressroom.toyota.com/Releases/View?id=TYT2008011405523
http://pressroom.toyota.com/Releases/View?id=TYT2007110961930
videos and more information: http://www.toyota.co.jp/en/tech/environment/phv/road_tests/index.html

Do be careful of reading any online speculative articles about future Prius. Usually they try and quote or translate from a Japanese publication, which would use the very generous Japanese fuel economy test cycles. Quite often, you'll then see UK gallons used, which are larger than American gallons, so the MPG will be reported much higher. The current Prius http://toyota.jp/prius/spec/spec/ on the Japanese 10-15 cycle is listed as 33.0 km/l (77.6 mpg, or 93.2 Imp. mpg), and on the JC08 cycle 29.6 km/l (69.6 mpg, or 83.6 Imp. mpg), but on the US EPA test cycles it gets 48mpg city and 45mpg highway.

Otherwise, Toyota hasn't announced any changes yet for 2009, let alone 2010, for the Toyota Prius.

Because of gas prices, demand outstrips supply for the Toyota Prius currently. There are waiting lists at most dealerships, or dealerships are charging an "availability surcharge" over MSRP to get one now. Used Prius are selling for close to or over new prices due to availability right now. Prius production is down right now due to a parts shortage. The Toyota Prius makes up about 1/2 of all the hybrids sold in the US right now, and as of the end of May 2008 is Toyota's 3rd best selling vehicle in the US.

Would I buy one now? Well, I'm still debating if I should sell my 2001 Prius, as I don't drive it much... When I moved (to where I walk or take public transportation everywhere), I sold my 2004 Prius because I barely need 1 car, let alone 2. The newer Prius is more versatile with the larger size and hatchback, but I much prefer having a sedan like my 2001 Prius, so if I lost my 2001 in an accident I don't know if I'd replace it with the current Prius or not. (I'd now look at the Honda Civic Hybrid, the Toyota Camry Hybrid, or the Nissan Altima Hybrid.) But in the current high-demand market, I would patiently sit on a waiting list for a Prius, and not pay more than MSRP.

What is the car stereo lingo?

kudos4me07

Okay Im in the market for a new car audio system and Im looking at all these features and I dont understand what any of it means. THD, dB, Frequency response, Hz, voice coil and olms, what does all of this stuff mean and what are the better options.

Answer
Honestly, the best way to explain it is to have you dig around on http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/

There is a ton of info on how the stuff works on that site. 99% of audio equiptment is sold on brand name and gimmicks, not sound quality. If you understand how it works and what those mean, you can get a much better understanding of what is important.

Just some broad definitions though:
THD=total harmonic distortion, which is the amount of distortion in the signal from the amp.
dB=decibles, which is a logorythmic sonic energy measurement. Basically it tells you how loud something is.
Frequency response= how accurate a speaker is reproducing a sound.
Hz= hertz, or the frequency something is vibrating at. For instance, bass ranges from 15-150 or so Hz, while super high treble goes all the way to 20,000 hz and beyond.
a Voice coil is a physical piece of a speaker that makes the magnetic field to drive the speaker.
Ohms are a measure of electrical resistance. common speaker ohms are 2,4,6 and 8. when running them in series and parallel circuits they can go into different resistances, depending on how you wire it. (ie: 2 4 ohm speakers in parallel = 2 ohms, but 2 4 ohm speakers in series=8 ohms)

also: Rick is wrong. The more ohms the more resistance, not the other way around. Low ohms means that your amp will have to put out a hell of a lot more power. Low ohms means efficient, but also means high drain. (think trying to pump through a straw, then a firehose. The firehose needs a way bigger pump)

Selling a car with aftermarket speakers/sub liability question?

Alex

I installed aftermarket speakers/amp/sub in my car, as well as bass transducers.
If i sell the car without removing said electronics, can I be liable for their failure in the future?
For example, if my connections fail or break and damage the car (or somehow injure someone) can I be held responsible?

It works but is far from a professional installation. Do I just need to disclose the info to the buyer, or do I have them sign a waiver/form?

Answer
the car is what it is.

IMO you are no more reliable for the failure of aftermarket electronics than you are for the engine or transmission.

If the prospective buyer isn't comfortable with the electronics in the car it's their job to walk away.

why do some fatal accidents never appear on the news?

shannaniga

Sunday night at about 12:40am a car crashed on the southern state parkway. The car went through the guard rail and down a hill, landing just outside my neighbor's fence. I watched the fire fighters work to get the two people out of the car and one was put on a stretcher. at about 2am they used a crane to lift the car back onto the parkway so traffic must have been completely blocked. I tried to find an article on the news about the crash but found nothing so i figured that maybe the guy ended up okay but i heard the guy died in the hospital but theres no news report? why is some news not reported?
It wasn't on any local news websites where they report basically every time traffic slows down and lots of car crashes so you would especially expect it if someone died.

Tour bus crash in San Diego that killed 10?

Cheryl C

Answer
I'm not sure what the question is so my answer is... "no". :) The crash you're looking at was on local news but it was in Northern Cali

Hope this helps

WILLIAMS, Calif. â A casino-bound charter bus with an invalid license plate drifted off the road and then swerved back, sending it tumbling into a ditch and ejecting passengers as it rolled, police said. Eight people were killed and dozens injured.

The bus flipped over at about Sunday evening on a rural road, throwing some passengers and crushing others before it landed right-side up, California Highway Patrol spokesman Patrick Landreth said.

The bus, which left from Sacramento, crashed 10 miles short of its destination, the Colusa Casino Resort. Nobody from the bus was identified; many of the passengers were Laotian.

"It looks like they were going up to the casino to have a good time," California Highway Patrol Commander Fran Clader said Monday. "Unfortunately, it resulted in tragedy."

Early reports said that 10 people were dead and estimated that 35 others were injured. Officials now say eight people died with around 38 injured.

Authorities did not say why they think the driver veered off the road.

Firefighters used flashlights and infrared sensors to search the tall grass near the overturned bus Sunday night for more victims, but by early Monday were certain they had accounted for all the victims. The mud-covered bus was pulled from the ditch and was on a large tow truck.

Just before the accident, the bus veered off the two-lane road for about half a mile before the driver "overcorrected" and swerved back, Landreth said.

"The roof was collapsed down, the windows were broken out, and the bus was not only rolled over onto its side, it rolled completely over," Landreth said. "It was facing the opposite direction and it was on its wheels."

Authorities had not determined the name of the charter company early Monday morning.

The bus had "Greyhound" marked on its side. But a Greyhound official said it was no longer operated by the company.

"It is not our bus. We sold it more than two years ago," said Kim Plaskett, the Greyhound spokeswoman. "It is an old bus."

CHP spokesman Robert Kays said the bus had a Texas license plate that was "not valid." He said other registration serial numbers also came up invalid.

"There are still several pieces of this puzzle that's missing," Kays said. "We will find out who owns the bus."

CHP dispatcher Terry Troth said no other cars appeared to be involved in the crash.

Troth said he did not know the extent of the injuries. He said emergency responders were having trouble communicating with the passengers because many spoke Lao.

Clader said helicopters took victims to several area hospitals.

The crash took place in an area of rice fields and orchards a few miles east of Interstate 5 just north of Williams.

Laura Hennum, a spokeswoman for Enloe Medical Center, said 12 victims were admitted to the hospital. She said one died, three were in critical condition and two were in serious condition. Six other patients were being evaluated Sunday night.

"We activated our disaster response center, so we have been calling in additional staff," she told the San Francisco Chronicle.

Hi,

I have been using http://www.autoinsureusa.info/ and have been really happy with them. We have quite a few cars and I also take care of insurance for my children cars, and always use the site.

Is quotelab.com legit and safe to put my info? Have you ever used this site for car insurance quote?

Me

I'm looking for car insurance but I don't want to put all my personal info if this site isn't safe. I checked the web & I don't see anything about it being a scam, but I'd like to know if anyone has personal experience w/ them. Thnx!

You are asking for trouble putting personal information on such a website. Beside risking ID theft and spam, the quote you get from these sites are notorious for being inaccurate and unreliable. If you want an insurance quote call or visit a local insurance agent who has an office staffed by humans.

anybody know any good sources for hybrid info? ?

alyk

I'm doing a Report and I don't know which website to go on anyone got any ideas? plz help me!
do u know a good WEBSITE to find good hybrids pros and cons???? (pro's are good things and con's are bad)
WEBSITES only plz.

Answer
Insurance is about the same as a regular car.

Maintenance is about the same as a regular car - use your favorite mechanic or DIY.

Same gasoline as a regular car...

Depending on model, many hybrids are holding high resale values (mainly the fuel-economy hybrids as opposed to the power hybrids).

Pros:
* Depending on where you live, tax incentives (income tax credit for US federal, some states or Canadian provinces offer income tax credits/deductions or sales tax reductions),or single-occupant HOV lane privilages (CA, VA, FL, NY), or reduced tolls (NY) or free parking...
* better HP and acceleration than a comparable car
* better (lower) emissions than a comparable car
* better fuel economy than a comparable car
* own a neat techy car
* long warranty (depending on model, the hybrid battery or system is warrantied in the US a minimum of 8 years/80,000 miles, up to the AT-PZEV models in CA-emission states out to 10 years/150,000 miles, and it is NOT pro-rated but a full coverage.)
* you do not plug it in (charges off of the gasoline engine and recapurted kinetic energy while braking)

Cons:
* slightly higher initial purchase price
* own a neat techy car (should you need unscheduled maintenance (break down), you're mainly stuck paying dealer rates)
* many ill-informed people stopping you and asking questions about your car, telling you untruths about your own car, or even telling you how stupid you were for buying it...
* you cannot plug it in

Unfortunately, not all hybrids are created equal... There are different hybrid technologies, depending on manufacturer. Even among the same manufacturer, you can find one model tuned for performance (power and acceleration) with only a slight fuel efficiency improvement, compared to another for fuel efficiency and emissions. (See the Honda Accord Hybrid vs. Honda Civic Hybrid, or the Lexus models compared to their sister Toyota models...)

(PS: be sure to use a spell-checker and grammar-checker when submitting your project. "plz" and "u" is fine for IM, but is not proper English and can cost you some points on your assignment (and the disdain of many people outside of your friends).)

Honda car electrical problem - Desperate!!! - Alternator undercharge indicator flashing on battery checker?

Host

I have an electrical problem with some component on the car but can't figure out what it is.
I have changed out many things to solve it, but it always just comes back to bite me.
I rely on this car for my work and it's my only income.

I have this battery checker that has 3 LED's that shows whether the alternator is undercharging or overcharging or OK.

Undercharge: Right and Middle lights on.
OK charge: Right light on only.
(It has never gone to overcharge)

Brand new items (All installed within 1.5 weeks of now)
All power cables and proper connectors (4 guage and 6 guage where needed)
Battery, Alternator, Belts, Wires, Plugs, Starter.

Turn on car. Turns on fine.

Go into drive. Drive. Drives fine. No flickering of lights.
I drive around 35 - 45 mph, then when I brake down so that the rev's are at 1,000 RPM's or a little higher, the Undercharging lights will blink between each other fast with the car's pulse / beating rate of the firing of sparks in the engine I presume. When I go from Drive to Neutral, the flashing does not occur until I've gone up above 2,000 or so, then decelerate down to 1,000, then it starts again.
This problem started today after I noticed the cap and roater were not tightly bolted to each other by a very slight hairline, slight gap between the two, and that one bolt is missing towards the front. Tightened them up a little more. Problem started.

Now, leading up to this problem, for a month or so I've been using the alternator checker tool and it has been useful in pointing out possible problems (all of the new items listed above). It was first the alternator that went. Sluggish steering, acceleration. Found out it was the Voltage Regulator in the alternator. Replaced the alternator myself. Worked like a dream. It was like a new car. Then, next day, the battery light flashes. Timed pulses, and sometimes flickering weirdly. Bright or hazed flickering. I decided to change my battery out then, because the performance diminished once again. Then, same problem. Battery flashing. Started changing out the wire to the alternator, 4 guage. Got better in performance. Problem came back again but not as bad. Changed out the starter wire, same thing. Came back. Then started messing with ground wires. As far as I know now all ground wires are ok.

The only one I have a question about is this thread and bolt just sitting there on the alternator. There isn't a ground wire to it, but people told me it wasn't needed. Theres a power wire bolted on, and there's a wiring harness plugged into the back.

Each time I have replaced something, the problem stops for a bit, then comes back. The battery light used to pulsate here and there, and sometimes for a good minute until I went from Drive to Neutral, then it would be "OK" for the alternator. And, the Middle and Right alternator checker lights would switch between each other. One on, one off, and would switch depending whether I was in drive or neutral, and sometimes had a mind of their own, and would switch only when I pressed on the gas, and also sometimes didn't do anything but stay on "OK" (Right light), and sometimes will just stay on the middle light, with the right light on. See this is troubling, because there IS NO DESCRIPTION ABOUT JUST HAVING THE MIDDLE LIGHT ON. It's at least 2 lights on that creates a reading, not just 1. Middle and Right means undercharge. Right means ok. Left light and something else means overcharged. Overcharged light has NEVER come on.

So it came from the old problem to the new problem. I drive, then I slow down, as soon as I slow down to 1,000 rpm's both of the undercharge indicator lights pulsate fast like christmas lights between each other. This makes absolutely no sense, and so I have no other idea as to what the problem is except that it might be the Cap and Roater somehow, but I am afraid I am spending way too much and will spend more uselessly and have the same exact problem if I get a new cap/roter.

I re-grounded the transmission to the car, yes I scraped paint away with a wire whisk. Grounded thoroughly.

Another idea has been that maybe my cooling fan has a short in it somehow. The battery light, without hitting bumps in the road or switching gears or anything having to do with me, would come on, then come on again, around the time frame that the cooling fan goes on and off (15 seconds).

Another reason that the 2 lights would be "undercharged" or randomly situated was when I tested the gas pedal and the brake. Pushing on and off between very fast like. It would make the lights flash between eac hother, but only when I did pressing. Now when I test it, that doesn't happen at all. So weird.

I have taken it to multiple mechanics that have garages, and some back yard mechanics that are ase certified. They are all stumped much more that I am.

Please help me diagnose this problem.

Answer
Well, I'm no Honda expert, but I can try. First thing to check with alternator problems is belt tension or condition. A worn or loose belt can cause the alternator to slip under loads and you can experience voltage spikes. You said you replaced the alternator, but you should also replace the belt if you haven't already.

I should also explain that the battery light does not mean the battery is low or bad. All it means is the alternator is not producing output (doesn't matter what the battery voltage is). It should really be an alternator light instead of a battery light.

So if you replaced the WHOLE alternator (not just the voltage regulator), then I would think this is some kind of regulation problem. Now the voltage regulator is inside the alternator from what I can tell, so it takes a signal from the PCM that tells it how much current to produce. So one possibility is the wiring from the PCM to the voltage regulator is damaged.

Looking at the diagram, it looks like Honda is using some sort of goofy current-sensing electrical load detector (ELD) to help control the alternator output (it's some stupid device to improve fuel economy by like 0.5% or something). Basically this is supposed to sense how much current everything in the car is using and then tell the alternator to make that exact amount. Heaven forbid if it ever made a little extra voltage to actually charge something and wasted a few more drops of gas.

Anyway, it seems that if the load detector was faulty and underestimating the amount of current the car was using, the alternator output would be too low without considering any other regulation mechanisms (is maintaining constant voltage really that bad Honda?). Since the car seems to be adapting to the improvements in voltage and current you've been making, I like this theory. On some of the other cars you get a check engine light with a P1298 code, but you didn't say if you had any codes or check engine light. So you might try changing the ELD. I think it's in the fuse box and has a metal bus bar running through it from the alternator fuse. Check that 80A fuse (#41) and make sure it's good. You should also check fuse 15 under the dash (alternator speed sensor fuse?).

Here's the wiring diagram so you can see what I'm talking about: http://www.revbase.com/BBBMOTOR/Wd/DownloadPdf?id=1a121b69-ac02-4e4a-82b4-044ed8489237

Video about replacing the ELD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qYVWmQE5tDk

P.S. Next time remember to put your car model and year. Luckily I was smart enough to find your other question with the info. You should also buy an actual voltmeter so you can report actual figures instead of just describing how many ways two lights are blinking. Throw that thing out and buy one that tells you voltage: http://www.amazon.com/Equus-3721-Battery-Charging-Monitor/dp/B000EVWDU0
