What were the actual cars used in Disney's Cars?

Eliza W

I'm most interested in what Flo was. I know a lot of the others, but can't seem to find any info on her year make and model.

Sorry if it seems like a weird question, but my husband and I are in the market for a restoration and I love the lines. =)

Answer
* Owen Wilson as Lightning McQueen, described by John Lasseter in the LA Times as "A hybrid between a stock car and a more curvaceous Le Mans endurance racer."[3]
* Michael Keaton as Chick Hicks, described by Pixar as "A generic 1980s stock car."[4] Strongly resembles a 78-88 General Motors G-Body such as Buick Regal or Grand National.
* Richard Petty as "The King" Strip Weathers. The car's design was based on Richard Petty's 1970 Plymouth Superbird

[edit] Radiator Springs cars

* Paul Newman as Doc Hudson, a 1951 Hudson Hornet, later revealed to be the Fabulous Hudson Hornet.
* Larry the Cable Guy as Mater, a 1951 International Harvester L-170 "boom" truck[5][6] with elements of a mid-1950s Chevrolet.[4] One-Ton Wrecker Tow Truck.
* Bonnie Hunt as Sally Carrera, a 2002 996-series Porsche 911 Carrera.
* Cheech Marin as Ramone, a 1959 Chevy Impala Lowrider.
* Tony Shalhoub as Luigi, a 1959 Fiat 500.
* Michael Wallis as Sheriff, a 1949 Mercury Club Coupe (police package).
* George Carlin as Fillmore, a 1960 VW Bus.
* Paul Dooley as Sarge, a 1941 Willys model jeep, in the style used by the US Military.
* Jenifer Lewis as Flo, a 1957 Motorama show car.
* Guido Quaroni as Guido, a custom forklift, hybrid between Isetta (front) and Messerschmitt Kabinenroller (back)
* Katherine Helmond as Lizzie, a 1923 Ford Model T.
* Joe Ranft as Red, a 1960s style fire truck (most closely resembles a mid-1960s Pirsch pumper but also resembles American LaFrance models).

[edit] Other cars

* John Ratzenberger as Mack, a 1985 Mack Super-Liner.

Why do cars have low mpg?

Answer
http://www.epa.gov/otaq/fetrends.htm
for the latest EPA report studying the fuel economy in cars from 1975 through current (2008 at the moment).

You'll see that over time HP has gone up, 0-60 times have gone down, weight has gone up, % of 4WD vehicles have gone up, % of manual transmissions have gone down, and fuel economy has remained relatively stagnant/unchanged.

The most telling graph is on page 6 of the Executive Summary, titled "Weight and Performance (Annual Data)" that shows a pretty X inverse proportional graph showing that as weight increased starting in the 1980s, that fuel economy dropped off at a similar rate.

If you look, you'll see many vehicles that have grown out of their original market classes over the years. People have been looking for more convenience items added to their cars (AC, power items, etc.), and manufacturers have been doing so. Bigger cars, with more stuff on them, makes for higher weight.

The federal government also keeps adding in more safety regulations over the years, such as frontal airbags, tire pressure monitors, better frontal crash and rollover safety protection, and also more stringent air pollution controls. All of this also adds weight.

More weight just takes more energy to move around, so lowered fuel economy.

With the increased weight/size/features of cars today compared to a few years ago, but with same/better fuel economy, actually I am impressed that fuel economy has been getting better over the years to combat the decreases from the changes in the cars. Basically, auto manufacturers have been building what will sell (which is usually bigger and with more features) and still meet minimum governmental requirements. Once the government finally raises the CAFE (corporate average fuel economy) standards, the manufacturers will have to finally increase vehicle fuel economy (or at least sell more of the fuel efficient models and less of the gas guzzling models to increase the fleet average). There was a recent CAFE increase, but it is only an incremental change starting with the 2011 model year...

How to find registered owner of a car with a VIN number?

askquestio

I sold my car years ago to a dealer and now I would like to buy it back. How do I find the name of owner and his address with a VIN number of the car? Can I find this info from DMV?

Answer
I used to sell cars in America. in OHIO.
NOT THE DMV.....At the county courthouse, a record is kept of EVERY owner, in sequence, of the same car. They would have the records of each title transfer, from owner to owner.
However, this may be a matter of public privacy... and only the police or a private detective could intervene.

If the last owner in your county moved to another state... I think you will be lost forever...gooood luck.

can i buy software that GIVES ME INFORMATION FOR CARS BY USING VIN NUMBER?

autopartsp

Answer
I seriously doubt it. To get an accurate answer go to a new dealer's parts counter and ask your question. The VIN # has very secure information on it. #1. With a VIN # You could walk into any dealership that sells that vehicle they could supply every bit of info on the car including key codes. You have to prove your the owner of a VIN before you get anything. The info is stored on a Ford, Chevrolet computer program. You don't find these dealer factory programs at Staples or Tiger Direct.

Chinese VS. Indian cars?

Partial Di

I am biased towards Indian cars.cause I am Indian, but I think they are better.

Why?

Because they have better crash safety, even the tiny Tata Nano is better than a Chinese coupe or smalls sedan in terms of front and rear impact.

Indian cars usualyl have more powerful power plants.

More reliability, if you know Mahindra and TATA, they will go on forever.

They actually have nice diesel engines, and have better engine tech because they have bought many "powerful" western engine making companies and have ventures with Japanese companies like Honda and Suzuki.

Interior of Indian cars is......bad, worse than Chinese cars. But, other than that, I see no other faults.

But what do you guys think?

(Please no uneducated folk who think of India as a cow herding country just because it hasn't been in the news as much as China; stop looking at info from the 70's or 80's.)

Answer
Chinese cars suck, which is why GM is taking over the market in China.
Indian cars not equipped with the appropriate features for the American market. Not only that, since India likes to hope on the train with the best opportunities, like the relationship between India and Russia during the Cold War, even with the appropriate modifications you'll not going to see those cars in the USA.

Even if such vehicles are allowed inside, I really doubt they would sale. Ask KIA how hard it was to get into the American market versus Japanese vehicles, European vehicles, Ford, GM, Daimwhatever, etc. Shoot, why do you not ask an more harder question like this.
Hell, Indian cars will not even sale in California which has an extremely strong car culture, possibly the most out of all the States. Car sales here are the highest in the USA and there's no adequate public transportation in So.Cal. Taxis are hell a lot expensive compared to NY. The MetroLink train that runs on very specific and few "Lines" charges 56.2 cents a mile. =/ It takes me over 15 dollars from Fontana to LA Union Station. It takes me less than 3 dollars to drive there on the 210, safer and faster as well, That shows you how much car industry's lobbyist hinder Public Transportation efforts.

Also, many States are adapting much of Californian emission laws which are the toughest in the USA.

Which car is better, Indian or Brazilian.

Also, diesel engines will not sale well in the USA because it's very inconvenient. Take Peugot, or w/e it's called, they did not survive the American market.

Here are some reasons for the car diesel disadvantages.

1-Diesel engines are dirty and do not meet Federal standards, let alone many States because of all the MPG legislation and stronger emission rates in the US.
2-I only see diesel pumps in very random and few places here in So.Cal.
3- Diesel is more expensive than 87 octane here in So.Cal
4-Diesel engines will have to be nerfed in power and torque to be fuel efficient and better emissions.
5-Diesel technology is expensive, therefore diesel engines are also. I read this article in Car and Drive about reintroducing diesel engines to the American market. The specs for the vehicle were weak and the cost high. =(

Also, you see our big rigs use diesel and also a very few amount of big cab trucks because diesel gives more torque than power. The major problem about these "work horses" is because.....

Department of Motor Vehicles charge more money because it's a work-vehicle if powered by diesel and it's a truck, in California the registration is higher regardless if it's diesel or not so long the truck is listed as work-vehicle. =(

Conclusion.

Though Indian vehicles are better than Chinese, it'l never survive the Western market for long without a lot of costly changes, even if India's economy has "cheaper" labor than USA the American car buyers still will not purchase the car if not assembled in USA and will never buy a Chinese car. LMFAO. Do you see the products they make? They hardly last long and just bad. That's just another story.

Sorry for long story but to compare to countries products than you'll have to compare them to the leading country's industry before assessing. By comparison, India vehicles are better constructed, less pollutant, a bit better mileage, but will all become obsolete soon and big waste for designing diesel engines since they'll never be efficient. =(

car of the futer?

RoB

Answer
Hydrogen powered, as in water powered. Yes, it will be powered by plain water. You can even pour your water from your water bottle in it and it will work perfect. It will produce 100% water vapor (steam) and absolutely no poisonous gases or fumes. It will not need any gasoline what-so-ever and hardly any oil. In fact, the engine isn't on the front of the car. it will be like a skateboard and will make up the whole bottom of the car. You can also take off the rest of the car (mainly like a shell) and change it into a mini van, car, sports car, truck, ect.. but with the same engine always there on the bottom.

The steering wheel will be totally different an will not operating by twisting it. If you want to turn right, you squeeze the right side of the wheel (not circular shaped). If you want to make a sharper turn, you squeeze harder. There are no peddles and you operate the speed of the car on the steering wheel. If you get tired, you can move it over to your partner in the seat next to you.

It will also feature lots of state of the art technology not in most current cars yet. It is produced by GM and is called the "Hy-Wire". It will be selling in 2010, only 3 years away!! They won't be expensive at all because there are only about 5% moving parts, hydrogen engines are very simple and cheap to produce, won't need any oil, and less overall metal. They are going to be extremely reliable and will probably exceed over a million miles with only 2 trips to the shop. Can't wait to get my hands on them.

Here are some pictures and reviews of it. Some pictures will show the interior, sports car shell and minivan shell along with the actual "skateboard" engine.

Transfer car title info?

My father in law gave me his old car for free. What do I do to transfer the title to my name.Thank you.

Answer
Well each state is different when it comes to title transfer, but i live in New Mexico and work for the DMV. Here we think its easier to use a Bill of Sale which you can find online most of the time or pick up at your local DMV. Whoever sold/gave you the car just fills it out and you take that and the title into the DMV with you drivers license or ID and insurance card. Where the amount goes the seller would just put GIFT. So you dont get charged sales tax so all you would pay is the registration and title fee. At least thats how we do it here! Hope this helps

can you look up someones car title info?

That is private info, especially the address. The registration date may be listed, however, the address of the registered owner will not be.

As a kids i saw all the BTF movies and have always wanted a Delorean. I have been looking for one good one at a great price for years. i found one for $13,000, seen pictures and everything .. the only thing that is bugging me is the year. the person you is selling it to me swares it's a 83. but all my studys says that they never made one after 81. I have not seen the car in person. and every body I've talked to also says that they only know of the 81 and that as far as they know that was the last year it was made.. but seening as it was not a big seller and that it was short lived cause of the owners drug thing.. not much is known to anybody i know about that car.. please let me know if I'm right or is something up with this car??

Answer
wiki says:

The De Lorean DMC-12 is a sports car that was manufactured by the De Lorean Motor Company for the American market in 1981 and 1982 in Northern Ireland. It is most commonly known simply as the De Lorean, as it was the only model ever produced by the company. The DMC-12 featured gull-wing doors with a fiberglass "underbody", to which non-structural brushed stainless steel panels were affixed. A De Lorean was featured as a home-made time machine in the Back to the Future trilogy.

The first prototype appeared in March 1976, and production officially began in 1981 (with the first DMC-12 rolling off the production line on January 21) at the DMC factory in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland. During its production, several aspects of the car were changed, such as the hood (bonnet) style, wheels and interior. About nine thousand DMC-12s were made before production stopped in late 1982. Today, about 6,500 De Lorean Motor Cars are believed to still exist.[1]

A total of about 9,200 DMC-12s were produced between January 1981 and December 1982.[3] Almost a fifth of these were produced in October 1981. About 1,000 1982 models were produced between February and May 1982, and all of these cars had the VIN's changed after purchase by Consolidated International to make them appear as 1983 models. There are the 15XXX, 16XXX, and 17XXX VINs which were originally 10XXX, 11XXX and 12XXX VINs.

So if it was made in late 1982, it may well be considered a 1983 model

However, Prices for DMC-12s vary widely and are dependent upon supply and demand. As of early 2007, a De Lorean in good to excellent condition can be had for around $20,000 to $29,000. Mint-condition cars can fetch up to $50,000. There are an estimated 6,500 surviving DMC-12s today. Some of the larger parts carry a steep price tag, such as the fiberglass underbody. Most parts are reasonably priced and readily available.

So - the $13,000 price tag is what makes me raise an eyebrow. If the car is in good condition, it should fetch almost double that. So, I am the kind of guy who says "Why so cheap?"

Run your car on water?

Ahmadi Ahm

Did anyone know or any info? About run your car on water? Please provide me more info about this. Very-very need. I'm so exited right now..
Cheers.. thank and regards!

Answer
You can run your car on water! And in doing, so you double your gasoline and engine power increase of 25% or more! Let me explain how you can run your car on water.

It will not be good to draw in a gas station more than half the time you do it because you decided to run your car on water? Together, be able to pass the gas station more often, smile because you realize how much money you save, you know that you included in the increase in the number of people who take responsibility the improvement of our environment. Believe me, it feels good, personal and financial!

It seems strange that you can run your car on water, after all, gas and water do not mix really. However, hydrogen and oxygen when they are in the form of gas, hydrogen, oxygen and gasoline do mix quite well.

To turn the oxygen and hydrogen into gas, I was use my electrical car system to turn water into oxygen and hydrogen. Through the action of the electrolysis of water, I use a car engine to inject hydrogen and oxygen gas in a fuel-air mixture is combined with the piston engine to compress the mixture and spark plugs to ignite it, I now have a car that runs on water! And this is how you can run your car on water!

Benefits that easy to make changes to your vehicle so your car can run on water are many and include:

- The proper functioning of the engine(Smoother Engine)
- Less pollution
- Increase the fuel consumption of up to twice
- Remove carbon deposits in the engine
- Less wear on the engine
- Save money
- Repayment of the IRS
- 15 to 25 per cent increase in power
- Low operating temperature engine

When I started reading about how to ârun your car on waterâ, I read many articles and outline, and I came across a number of observations that cars running on water is a hoax, because the process used more energy than. The investigation continues into the charges that yes, I realized, he brings energy to the system works, and this time it is an irrefutable fact of physics that can not do more than the machine used. Ultimately, of course, the use of energy. I can not work if it does not. This is not a fake, and it does not work.

Think of how many resources an apple tree uses, the production of waste. We can see how mathematics is a good tree, and although I personally have not done that I think of efficiency, less than one percent. Who really cares? We are aware that we do not intend to use the food, the sun rays or radiation absorbed by the tree, and it is simply the cycle. We are pleased to produce the apple.

In an effort to launch a car on water, it will be the same process. Your car voltage regulator generator that die when the battery is charged and the generator is still not spinning. The potential loss of energy used to produce hydrogen. It saves money and gas and, yes, it works! It reduces pollution, carbon deposits in the engine, lower operating temperature of the engine, the engine 15 to provide a 25% increase in power and increase fuel efficiency twice. It is therefore natural to take advantage of the system and reap the fruits of that.

Are you ready to learn how to build your own device to convert hydrogen to power vehicles and hybrid cars to run your car on water? And heyy, when you run your car on water, just go and enjoy an apple tooooooo!

Answer
it depends what state you live in. go on a local news stations website and type in car accident in their search pane. then look for the date that it happened. but the main thing is it depends on what state you live in and even if you do log on to their website, they still might not have anything on their website because unfortunately not all car accidents get posted on their websites or even the news tv program. i hope this helps and i hope that your aunt's health improves. much luck and my prayers are with you and your family.

Maybe "Hot Rod" (1979) -- a made-for-TV movie.
A drag-racer enters a local championship race. However, he runs up against the town boss, a corrupt sheriff who has already made arrangements to ensure that his own son wins the race. Here's a photo of the 1941 Willy coupe from IMCDb: http://www.imcdb.org/vehicle_260802-Willys-Coupe-1941.html

or

Could you be thinking of the movie called "Junkyard to Finish Line (2003)"? The car, in this instance, is a '54 Mercury.

Synopsis: Follow a team of classic car enthusiasts as they go from junkyard to junkyard in search of a 1954 Mercury. Once found, they restore the vehicle back to racing quality and enter the La Carrera Panamerica Road Rally. Over 2000 miles are covered while the team races the Mercury from the Guatemalan border, to Neuvo Laredo and ultimately straight through the Rio Grande in Texas.

How do I look up an old news article from Feb. 20 1997?

Alicia

Car Accident that happened in Glasgow, Ky on Feb. 20, 1997

Answer
I've actually found that inputting in the date and the pertinent information into a search engine (Google or Yahoo) will find some matches. I looked up information about a company by just typing in the phone number I had for them in Yahoo search.

For this, I'd type in Feb. 20 1997 Glasgow Kentucky and see if you find it. If it doesn't, that means it's not online and you'll have to research archives at libraries, etc; however, it also might not hurt to type in Feb. 21 as the date, just in case the accident happened after the paper went to print that day.

Please tell me the full story of Kaitlyn Lassiter!?

ezgrl95

I am sure you all know what happened to Ms. Lassiter at Kentucky Kingdom. Her feet got chopped off. Even though she went to my school, I did not know her very well, altough I had talked to her before she was homeschooled. How much money does she get now? I know she got like 20 million when she sued KK and for medical bills. Please tell me every detail and website you know about her. Because my friends want to go there with me tomorrow........

Answer
Kaitlyn Lassiter, the 14 year old teenage girl, who had both feet severed on a Louisville amusement park ride on 21st June 2007, is speaking out publicly for the first time.

She and her family are pushing for better ride safety.

Lassiter had both of her feet severed when a cable broke loose on the Superman Tower of Power ride, at Kentucky Kingdom. Doctors were able to re-attach one foot, but could not save the other one.

âThis accident has affected my life dramatically,â said Lassiter. âI wonât be the person I was before because now Iâm scared of stuff. I fear for my life when I get in a car, I fear for my life when I get on an elevator. Itâs hard for me to live my days like I used to.â

âThe accident took my legs being taken from me, which people take for granted every day, to have something changed,â she said. âAnd thatâs sad.â

Lassiter and her family have filed a lawsuit against Kentucky Kingdom.
There has been a ton of media coverage concerning the 13-year-old girl who lost both of her feet when The Superman Tower of Power at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville, Kentucky malfunctioned on June 21st. Now nearly two weeks after the terrifying accident, more details about the victim are emerging, including her current condition.

We now know the victim was 13 year old Kaitlyn Lassiter. According to a June 27th news report by WLKY News Channel 32, Kaitlyn is a Louisville resident who recently moved to the area from Florida. According to the same report, Kaitlyn was taken to a local hospital after the accident, and was then transferred to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. In a statement released to WLKY TV on July 3rd, Kaitlyn's parent's Randy and Monique Lassiter state that Kaitlyn remains in stable, and that doctors were able to reattach her right foot. In that statement Dr. Douglas Weikert , who is the assistant professor of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at Vanderbilt, explains that they were unable to reattach the left foot due to the severity of the injury, and that her recovery is progressing as expected.

Kaitlyn's parents claim that they have not been in contact with anyone from Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom since the accident. A June 27th report by WLKY TV quotes a statement from the family as, "Kaitlyn's parents would like to state for the record that despite claims in the media by representatives from Kentucky Kingdom Theme Park, at no time has any representative of the theme park been in touch with members of the family."

UK!! How much, annually, would car insurance be for a 17 yr old just passed, Peugeot 206....rest of info here ?

Pilot & Ma

Peugeot, 2000, manual, petrol and 17 year old just passed.
Also, if you get insured before you pass your license, it will be very high won't it? But if i get insured say 28 days before I pass my test, will my insurance company take notice of this if I tell them and reduce it seen as though I have passed?
Many Thanks
Park it on a driveway. Live in Yorkshire.
I'm not asking for exact I just want to know approximately

Answer
It depends on a number of factors (including where you keep the car and what part of the country you are in).

Your best bet would be to phone a couple of insurance companies and get a quote.

99 audi a4 quattro insurance questions?

Ian

I am looking to buy a 99 audi a4 quattro. My friend said the insurance is high on it, is it really that much higher than like a 99 honda accord? By the way I am 16 and have a clean driving record. Thanks in advance.
It is a 4 door and here is the link to the car
http://cleveland.craigslist.org/cto/2422862555.html

Answer
Yes....

The insurance cost of a car relates to both the driver and the car.
In real terms it relates to the cost of claims made against the car.
Some cars are more expensive to repair - some cars tend to be driven by people who make more claims. etc...

Although I guess you are in Ohio the principle is the same as here in the UK

Each Car model us given an insurance group.
The higher the group the higher the insurance.
Different insurance companies may offer different amounts but the higher groups will tend to be more expensive.
When a young driver is insured on a high group car this can really push your quote up.

Contact a few companies and see what they tell you.

Here are some links to info on car insurance groups in the UK which shows the A4

http://the-car-club.co.uk/Insurance-Groups-Audi-A4.html

and the Accord

I had to write a news story based on a car accident for school. Any changes I should make?

Three people were involved in a car accident on Tuesday at 3: 30 p.m. located on Timberwood Drive and Randolph Avenue. Kelvin L. Bowlen age 19 , of 94 Belleview Drive was driving West on Timberwood Lane along with passenger Brad Lewitt, an 18 year- old from Sharpe Boulevard.
Bowlen passed another westbound car that had stopped for a stop sign. Soon after, Bowlen made a left turn into Williams Avenue into the path of Lloyd Johnson vehicle. Johnson was 54 years- old from 33 Jefson St. and had no passengers.
His car was headed North on Williams. The left side of Bowlenâs car was struck by the front. Following the collision, Johnsonâs car including Bowlenâs car both crossed into the southbound lane and traveled 54 feet north of the intersection.
Bowlenâs car then hit the front end of 23-year-old Suzanne Wylie of 7 Delamar Dr. which was southbound on Willams. Her car was forced off the road and into a ditch. Wylie had no passengers with her at the time of the crash. Kelvin Bowlen, brad Lewitt, and Suzanne Wylie were all taken to Keller county Hospital.
Lloyd Johnson was said to be uninjured. When asked whether drugs were involved in this fatal crash police stated âto early to tellâ. It has been confirmed at the time of the crash a young women named Amelia Lisbon, of 162 Williams Avenue, was a resident of one of the streets mentioned earlier in the accident.
Lisbon was asked who was at fault she replied âI didnât see what happenedâ. Lisbon was said to be outside walking her dog while suddenly she said she heard âa horrible noise like a earthquakeâ. The police are still investing the crash deciding what may have caused this accident. There is no more further information regarding the four victims involved.

Buying a car question?

Carlos the

Hi I was looking to buy a car sometime in april/may and I was wondering if having a used credit card would hurt me. I have two but one is paid off and the other i have used 800 on the other out of 2000. I have been paying more than minimum payments on it every month and will continue to pay more than minimum till then, so i should have under 700 due by then. My credit score is around 730 (might be higher by then too) and im 20. Also I have money for down payment but lets assume I'd be giving 0 down. It will be a used car!

So my question is will any of that keep me from getting a loan for the car? and would i be able to get a decent interest rate if I do?

Answer
My general policy is avoiding loans and credit except in buying a house, emergency medical or other emergencies, or education loans for school. Credit gets you buying ahead of what you can afford and is an interest rate trap. People "need" and what they mean is "want and impatient". Almost every car loan requires that you have full insurance coverage including collision and for some lower priced cars, the collision insurance is more than the interest on loans.
For financing, you generally do worse financing at a dealer than at a credit union or bank. Dealer financing will be a combination of a high rate and inflated car price. Check with your bank or credit union about auto loan terms and rates before you car shop. Loan approval is based on loan to value of the car and your regular earnings to debt and expense ratios. "Credit score" is just another trp to get you to borrow more money as they only lend to people that can pay them back, or the interest rate is through the roof.

In buying a used car, always get it checked out by a mechanic and assure the title is clean. It is better with a warranty to allow you to check it. I prefer lower mileage used cars especially if still under factory warranty. Maintenance history is a plus. Research car models at US News and MSN autos:
http://home.autos.msn.com/
http://usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/cars-trucks/rankings/used/
And, check its value at Edmunds, com
http://www.edmunds.com/appraisal/
Check with an insurance agent about your cost of insurance before you buy the car.

A car is a major expense and people do not typically look carefully.
Auto loan rates from banks and credit unions vary a lot now, with best rates under 3% a year. Financing at a dealer can be 12 to 18%.
http://www.bankrate.com/calculators/auto/auto-loan-calculator.aspx
A $10,000 car loan at 3.5% for 4 years is $223.56 per month.
$731 is interest.
Check the loan terms for any pre-payment penalties.

In most cases, you should pay off a credit card before taking a car loan because credit cards are a high interest rate and car loans can be at a decent rate. If you have issues paying down $800 quickly, you probably have trouble getting a good rate on a car loan.
Look at your income and expenses and try to figure out where the money is going.
Most banks will not finance old low priced cars, and you end up with the used car dealer high price and high finance cost.

Again repeating from very many years experience, pay off that freakin' credit card ASAP and begin trying to save money from your earnings. If you can afford car payments, you can afford to buy a car for cash by getting a cheaper car until you can afford a nice one. Life is not about building up a credit score unless interested in buying a house. When you buy a used car fully financed, you immediately are behind in its value to the amount you owe on it. A cheap car bought for cash can avoid collision insurance and only pay the required liability insurance. Guidance is a car less than 7 times the cost of collision insurance per year is not worth having the insurance since minor accidents get deductibles anyway. ANy loan will require collision insurance on the car.

Why are more automobiles sold in China than anywhere else in the world?

China surpassed America to become the world's largest automobile market in 2009 and keeps extending its lead. Over 18 million automobiles were purchased by Chinese in 2010. An estimated 30 million vehicles will be purchased annually in China by 2020.

Go read that.

A lot of "american" cars, aren't made in the United States.

And there are a lot of "foreign" cars that are.

My Mitsubishi Eclipse? Made in Illinois, by Americans.

You have to realize something though. You aren't supporting America, by supporting one guy selling a truck. Your money, is not going back into America. It's going into his wallet.

If he uses it to go by a TV made in China, and a car made in Japan....what good did it do you?

Did you even think about that?

Last note, since you seem to misunderstand something:

America: North, Central, and South America.

American: Anyone from ANY of those locations.

Which means people from Brazil, ARE AMERICANS. So are Mexicans. So you might want to rethink your definition of the word.

I'd imagine you think "asian" is only someone from China, Japan, etc? Did you know that Iraq is part of Asia? Etc....

Any new news in open wheel ? Champ Car future ? IRL on more road courses ?

John B

I know people will be mad at me. Any word on Champ Cars running next season. Any news Tony has been talking to Kevin K. ? Robin Miller, are you out there somewhere ?

Answer
Champ Car has lost another event (China), so they're in trouble, especially if the European Tour fails. They also lost the race in Denver. The IRL is rumored to have an event at Rockingham Speedway in North Carolina, so they have to be in decent shape to take a big gamble like that. Their isn't any public news about a merger, but it could be happening, but behind very closed doors. If there is no merger Champ Car will have a season, they amount of dates is the question.

EV car news article boasting 112 MPG http://autos.yahoo.com/blogs/motoramic/69-month-lease-mitsubishi-miev-bec?

Jason

ok...maybe I'm an idiot, but is an EV car all electric meaning no gasoline of other fuel? so how do they get a figure of 112 Miles Per Gallon (MPG) in a news article i just read on yahoo? ?.

Answer
We're stuck with MPG for electric cars for the same reason we still use "horsepower" to measure engine power. Engines have little to do with horses, but early car buyers wanted to use a metric they understood - horses.
*
Electric cars don't burn gas, so there are a couple of different ways to compare electric power to gasoline. The first is called MPGe, and this measurement compares the efficiency of the electric car to the theoretical "kilowatt-hour" equivalent energy stored in a gallon of gas. This is the MPG number you usually see attached to an electric car, it is easy to calculate and use for comparison, but it has little to do with reality.
*
Much more useful is cost-equivalent MPG, in other words, how far can you travel in an electric car for what a gallon of gasoline costs? Unfortunately, this number varies from day to day and from place to place with the changing prices of gasoline and electricity, which is why you never see this number used.
*
Example: I drive a Chevy Volt. The official MPGe number is 93 MPG. But the cost equivalent MPG for me (using my local electricity and gas prices) is about 190 MPG. Big difference!

What if I want to have my car repo'd?

Anna Lynnn

I just bought a used 1993 Toyota 4Runner from the dealership. Being young, stupid and on a mission, I made a huge mistake of going alone to the dealership. I bought every lie that the dealer told me and the truck is turning out to be a huge money pit. The breaks need to be replaced, the muffler needs to be replaced, there's something wrong with the steering, just everything. I put 3,000 down on it and "financed" 6 thousand. Along with that, the insurance (because I'm a new driver) for full coverage is almost 400 a month. I never knew that it would be this much, and I feel very stupid, as I should. Point is, I made a mistake and now I don't know if I should have them repo the car or if I should try to make it work? How badly would it effect my credit having a repo on it? What all do I have to do for them to repo it? Any help! Thanks

Answer
the best answers to your situation is to go back to the dealership perferrably with someone that has more experience in finance or selling/ buying cars, then tell them exactly your situation. hey you made a mistake of buying this car without knowing how much you can afford and how much you have to put into the car to get everything in "safe and working" condition. and it is their mistake for not putting you into a car that you can afford. any salesmen would know thats not a way to do business and if you talk to the manager OR even the owner of the dealership and inform them about your sales and situation they will surely understand that you need help, now you got their attention let them know you want to sell them back the car and get a cheaper car from them that you can afford. and if you actually manage to get to this point. this is round 2

for round 2 you will now caculate how much you can afford in my opinion for your situation i would suggest a $5,000 car AT THE MOST. reason for that is you only have 3,000 for down you still have to finance the car which will force you to have FULL Coverage which obviously you can't afford for a long period of time and financing only 2,000 is much easier than 6 thusands and interest will be alot less also. now ones you found the car you like in your price range, test drive it make sure you like it but dont show too much enthusiasm!!! then the second thing is look at the carfax! say "show me the carfax" that will allow you to find any known documentations of if the car has been in an accident, any major repairs being done, scheduled services been done or even if the car is a salvaged vehicle or not. if everything on the carfax looks good, now move on to step 3. go KellyBlueBook. go on a computer in their dealership and ask to check on kellybluebook.com input the Make,Model,Year and the condition of that vehicle which most of the time would be "good" or "excellent" condition if you getting it from a dealership, now base on the estimate kellybluebook.com tells you, you should have a good idea of are you getting a deal from the dealership or not. if they selling you the car for 4,500 and kellybluebook says it is only worth 3,000 used from dealer. then you can demand them to atleast match it or get close to it like 3.500. cause keep in mind you still have to pay for the famous TTT "Tax, Tag and Tittle" before the car is yours after u pay for the car. which usually runs at about $1,200. they dont tell u that untill at the end ofcause.

Extra tools to equip yourself with is Autotrader.com go on this site if you really want to bargain with them or just verify if their "deal" is good or not when you search for the same car around your area.

I was young before, i was dumb before. and i wasted money before. we live, we learn. we conquer! no matter what the outcome is, you still learn a very valuable lesson, that is to always do a bunch of research before making any big purchases and calculate your disposable income after covering all your bases. talking to other people first always helps.

keep in your mind that Better Business Bureau www.bbb.org/us or channel 6 news always helps before going to the lawyer advice. you not no dummie this time. you have tools, AND WEAPONS. :)

Is it true that Miley Cyrus died?

 ziv !

Heard on the internet that pop star/actress, Miley Cyrus, died in a car accident. Is this true? I keep getting really mixed, wishy-washy answers. Does anyone know for sure?

Answer
no:Contrary to fast-spreading rumors planted by pranksters on Digg.com and Wikipedia, 15-year-old Miley Cyrus, pop singer and star of the Disney Channel's Hannah Montana TV series, did not die in a car crash on Friday, September 5.

As of Saturday morning, no such accident had been reported in any legitimate news source. The story is a hoax -- and a poorly spelled one, at that.

One version, attributed to "Rueters" [sic], reads as follows:
Actress Miley Cyrus Died in Terrible Car Accident

Teen star of the hit Disney television series "Hannah Montana" Miley Cyrus appears to have died in a tragic car accident in the early hours of Friday morning. The young starlet was on her way to the filiming [sic] of the upcoming "Hannah Montanna" [sic] Series when her vehicle was reportedly hit by a large truck. Witnesses estimate that the colliding vehicle was travelling [sic] at "At least 55mph" and had "Run a stop sign." Although rushed in a [sic] critical condition to Pacific Alliance Medical Centre [sic], the news broke quickly amongst reporters that the teen had succumbed to her injuries during surgery.
A very-much-alive Cyrus performed Friday night at the Fashion Rocks concert at Radio City Music Hall in New York.

car overheating?

viet510rac

1990 toyota celica gt-s is overheating, question is how do you fix the over heating? how much would it cost? what are the steps in fixing it?? not quite sure whats the problem is. what are the common cause of overheating?? please explain

Answer
The car overheats because there isn't enough coolant in the system, or something in the system is not maintaining enough pressure. Many times it is a combination of these things.

Wait till the car cools (no duh!). Take a look at the engine bay. Are there any signs of leaking coolant? Usually orangish/browninsh stains along the engine, radiator, or splattered on the hood or frame. If so, follow them to the top-most, most forward position on the car. This is likely your culprit.

No stains... then pop off the radiator cap. Is your fluid level topped off? It will never just disappear from a properly running car, so if it's low, you are leaking it or consuming it somewhere.

First thing to check is the radiator cap. Take that bad boy to some place and have it pressure tested (I think your local parts store will do this for you for free). Make sure it holds the minimum amount of pressure. If you do ANY type of work on the cooling system, replace your cap also!

If the cap checks out, fluid level is low, and there are no outward signs of leaks, start your car up and let it warm up to normal operating temperature. Now get out and look at your exhaust. Is it puffing out steamy white smoke? If so, bad news.

If there are no leaks and the fluid level is fine, then likely either your water pump or thermostat failed.

You should also inspect all of your hoses in detail. With the cap off, squeeze them and make sure they all feel somewhat firm. If any of them feel soft, or have soft spots - especially wherever there are bends - replace that hose.

If you take it to a shop for the diagnosis, they'll usually charge you one hour's shop time to diagnose it. Sometimes they are nice and apply this to the cost of the labor if you have them swap out the errant part. However, expect to pay double or triple their cost for the part. If you go out and find the part somewhere else, it will likely be cheaper. However, most places make you buy their parts - warranty and such.

All in all, could be $100, could be $500, depending on the part that failed.

Breaking news: toyota recalls 270,000 Lexus worldwide for defective engines. Will this affect Lexus sales?

Q. Will Lexus sales be affected? here is the breaking news link for Toyotas defective engines.
http://www.autoblog.com/2010/07/01/breaking-toyota-admits-270-000-cars-have-faulty-engines-worldwi/?flv=1

Answer
Nope, won't hurt sales a bit. Many people that buy Toyota Lexus and have the delusion that a Toyota can be worth 40 grand have the same mental disorder that makes a wife go back to an abusive husband so no matter what Toyota does or how many people die from Toyota engineering ineptitude (56 so far this year) they will still go back and buy yet another one.

Yea it is pathetic, I know.......

it street racing illegal in japan?

JVREVOLUTI

Answer
Good news!

Japan is great!
Although the people don't always speak English they view all foreign things and languages to be superior to their own so - they will try valiantly to speak your language and apologize profusely when they fail miserably. They will do this with a friendly smile because it is part of the culture to be kind.

Also, you will find highly cultured women who although not big breasted like their Western counterparts (much to their embarrassment) are very feminine and enjoy taking care of drunken men of all ages, cooking, cleaning, taking care of babies Etc. They attempt to keep their voices sounding like four year olds because they know men are turned on by girls that age. Oh! Also they are very subservient inside and outside the bedroom.

Men are smaller in size but also very feminine, er I mean masculine. You can often see them practicing ninja moves on the train. They fully acknowledge that all foreign men are superior and are all too happy to provide cars and electronics to the world. They asked me to tell all of you that they love the US very, very deeply.

Street racing? Sure why not. It is illegal but if you want to give it a try go ahead. The police will simply ignore the obvious danger and may in fact cheer you on as you run over old men and little kids diving to get out of your way in crosswalks.

For you and the rest of YA! , Japan is anything you want it to be!

A Mormon elder kidnapped in Yunnan by North Korea?

Ryufei

I heard a news that one Mormon guy, who was blond in his 20's, was abducted in car in Yunnan province, China in August 2004 and was transferred to North Korean via Myanmar. This was the 1st US citizen case of the N. Korea abduction victims.

I heard The U.S Committee for Human Rights in North Korea held a press conference several days before and revealed this fact.

Does anyone know the details of this story?

Answer
David Sneddon, an American who is also a Mormon, disappeared from near Tiger Leaping Gorge in 2004. While there are suspicions of links with North Korea, there is absolutely no proof at all of North Korea being involved in his disappearance.

The following is the most recent article on the subject . . . it's dated 2009.

2003 Toyota Avalon timing belt or timing chain??? Anyone know?

aw2893

I just bought a 2003 Toyota Avalon with 85K miles, was wondering if it has a timing belt or chain? Also, is there anything I should replace right now at 85K miles? Thanks!

Answer
In the US, the 1996-2003 Toyota Avalon has a timing belt, while the 2004-2008 Avalon has a timing chain.
http://www.toyota.com/help/faqs/service-does_my_vehicle_have_a_timing_belt_or_a_timing_chain.html

For a 1999 or newer Toyota with a timing belt (like your 2003 Avalon), Toyota recommends at minimum an inspection at 60,000 miles or 4 years (whichever occurs first), and then inspections every 15,000 miles thereafter. But for costs, you should probably do a replacement at 60,000 mile/4 year intervals rather than the check and see approach.
http://www.toyota.com/help/faqs/service-what_maintenance_is_required_on_my_timing_belt.html

Hopefully you got the service history on your used Avalon when you bought it. Otherwise, you'll just have to hope that any of the regularly scheduled maintenances have been performed, or re-do them yourself if you are concerned that they may not have been done already. If you didn't get a copy of the Passport to Performance (Scheduled Maintenance Guide), you can view it at: http://smg.toyotapartsandservice.com/

You can also register on Toyota's owner site at http://www.toyotaownersonline.com/ to download the owner's manuals and also get other car care tips and guides. (I think you can also lookup any outstanding recall/service campaign info here with your VIN.)

I'm living in Singapore and thinking of moving to Johor bahru?

Rick E

I hear such terrible things from Singaporeans about Johor, but some Malaysia who live there say its not that bad. What is the real story. I'm American so a little crime doesn't bother me to much but I have two small kids and a wife to worry about. Singapore is EXPENSIVE!! and its killing me slowly. I need to move somewhere cheaper but close to Singapore as my wife is a Singaporean. I don't want to take her to far from her family because they're really close. So.... how bad is Johor Bahru????

Answer
Singapore is EXPENSIVE depending how you live...
A 2+1 HDB flat rental will cost around/min SGD1.3k (depending on area)
Local dinner at local coffee shop for a family of 4 will cost around SGD12 to SGD15
Electricity and water cost around SGD200 a month
Transportation is good as long you have good money... T.T
Minimum spending is around 4k per month for normal local family

Option 01:
Considering JB
Your wife a Singaporean, It be over her dead body if you wanna get her to live in JB.
Transportation is always good in JB as long as you have a car.
Food are cheap and nice, sometimes too nice, you will spend more than in SG

Option 02:
Ask you wife to get a JOB and have her FAMILY look after your children.
Singapore girl always think that they don't need to work as long as they married an Caucasian.
With 2 income per family and minimal your spending, at least you will die slower...try to get used to local life style and act like an local "Uncle"...you'll survive

Crime rate in SG are no better than JB. They just go "unreported" in the news...and later selected few to be documented in "Crime Watch" and broad cast on CH5. Singaporean always say JB danger cannot go la...but every weekend Singapore cars jammed the Causeway. Singapore "Auntie"s flocked the checkpoints and bazaars and Singapore guys sleep in JB hotels.

p.s RM240k is lesser than SGD100k. You can easily buy a nice Bungalow or 2 condo near JB with the price of a 3 room flat. Single storey terrace house around Gelang Patah cost around RM90k - RM110k. JB house are cheap even if you compare it within the State of Johor itself.

Answer
These are great! Did I tell you about that elderly woman who was very independent, took care of herself, took classes to get a gun-carrying license? She came out of a store and 4 young men were stealing her car, so she pointed her gun at them and shouted, "GET OUT OF THE CAR NOW!!!" They left, she got in the car, and THEN realized - it wasn't her car! She reported herself at the local police station, where 4 young men were at the counter reporting, "No kidding! A grandma!!! She just hijacked our car with a GUN!!!"

True story! I read it in the news a couple months ago.

UAW leader: Workers will make no more concessions...?

Q. "Even as Detroit's Big Three teeter on collapse, United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger said Saturday that workers will not make any more concessions and that getting the automakers back on their feet means figuring out a way to turn around the slumping economy."

Even though labor costs now make up 8 percent to 10 percent of the cost of a vehicle, Gettelfinger blamed the problems the auto industry is suffering from on things beyond its control â the housing slump, the credit crunch and the 1.2 million jobs that have been lost in the past year.

Do you agree with him?
Or do you think he desperately trying to "rearrange the deck chairs on the sinking Titanic"?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081115/ap_on_bi_ge/auto_bailout_gettelfinger
Don't consider me some anti-unionist, I've been a union member for over three decades.
But, in my opinion, there is a certain reality here that seems to escape the UAW leaders.

Answer
I don't think he has a clue. On one hand, yes, sales are being affected by the current economic climate but on the other hand, General Motors' market share has dropped 20 points over the last 30 years. I can't speak much for Ford and Chrysler but in GM's case, they became less focused on automobile manufacturing and diversified their business by purchasing companies like Hughes and Electronic Data Systems and later buy purchasing higher end European brands such as Lotus and Saab. They also spent a lot of dollars launching Saturn under the disastrous leadership of Roger Smith. Smith also reorganized GM's 5 brands (Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac) into 2 divisions; Chevrolet-Pontiac-Canada and Buick-Oldsmobile-Cadillac. Prior to this new lineup, the 5 brands were targeted to varying economic market segments with Chevrolet being at the low end and Cadillac being at the top. That all changed.

A great book that came out 20 years ago is "CALL ME ROGER: THE STORY OF HOW ROGER SMITH CHAIRMAN OF GENERAL MOTORS, TRANSFORMED THE INDUSTRY LEADER INTO A FALLEN GIANT". It talks about how Roger Smith was the first CEO of GM that wasn't a car guy, meaning had a background in engineering. He was an accountant, a bean counter. His focus was purely on increasing shareholder value and not on making great cars. A funny story talks about a Ford commercial that had aired in which a couple is waiting for a valet to bring them their car. The valet brings 2 or 3 different vehicles before he gets the right one. The point was that GM's brands had lost their identity and all looked the same.

Sorry for being so long about this but I'm close to the situation with my dad being a GM retiree. What are they gonna do, take away a 78 year old man's health care benefits and pension that their obligated to provide under contract? They knew they had these obligations but yet have hardly funded them. They've run their business into the ground people aren't buying their cars and the bill is due.

I don't think it's unreasonable to expect UAW members to have to pick up part of the costs for health care and retirement if they haven't already.
