why do police officers put black tape on their badges?

FallenAnge

I live in PG County,MD,and about a week ago an officer was killed in the line of duty. His funeral is scheduled for today, and today I noticed a lot of officers with black tape on their badges as well as their police cruisers. Is this done in memoriam of an fallen officer? Or is it for another reason?

Answer
Yes; the black tape on the badges are in memoriam of a fallen hero. I am sorry to hear this. I think they should make it known nationally whenever an officer has made the ultimate sacrifice. Same thing w/our service men & women. Instead of just hearing a few names at the end of Nancy Grace's shows (where she says, "An American Hero"); they all deserve national attention. They could make it a 7 PM thing on a certain channel that would cut into any regular programing at least to say a couple minutes of who the officer(s) was/were & the situations to how/where they lost their lives for serving. All flags should be half-staff, too. I'm sure they are in your area?
Prayers & love to Officer Adrian Morris & his loved ones. RIP. <3
http://www.lawofficer.com/article/news/maryland-officer-killed-crash ~fatal car crash claimed Officer Adrian Morris' life. He was 23 years very young and a part of the Police Explorer's program before becoming an officer. The county police chief said that many of the department's officers knew Officer Morris since he was 15, making it even more extremely difficult for them. Officer Morris (driver) & his partner were in pursuit of a stolen veh when the accident occurred. http://www.odmp.org/officer/21366-police-officer-adrian-morris It's soo eerie to see a law enforcement cruiser like that; especially knowing it claimed an officer's life. ={

Speaking of half-staff; they will be flown in that manner this Friday in honor of Neil Armstrong's funeral.

Ive been sick every day for 4 months. I have had flu, hayfever, tonsilitis&food poisoning. What can i do!?

DomDiamond

I had a car accident 4 months ago, I didnt get injured, just got a big shock. The next day I got a post nasal drip and a fever. I didnt have money to go to the doctor so I used some left over anti biotics, it got a little better then I got the flu and this cough that didnt stop for a month. My doctor kept giving me anti biotics, I was on them for 7 weeks straight. Then I got hayfever, and I tried to keep that under control but it turned into tonsilitis, I got anti biotics for that and it cleared up but then I got food poisoning and I got headaches and chills, I was throwing up, I had diarrhoea, then when that cleared up, I got hayfever again which is turning into tonsilitis again. Everytime I go to the doctor I just get medicine, I dont actually get better. Is there a huge problem with my immune system. I mean it is exhausting being sick all the time, and it affects everything I do. Im coughing, sniffing and I have a fever all the time. What can I do to get better?

Answer
You have a very poor compromised immune system. Antibiotcis will exacerbate this problem.

I am sorry about your poor immune system, medications unfortunately do weaken it.

If interested, here is some other reasons why the immune system gets weak.

Toxins: Most people today have excess accumulation of toxins and waste material in their bodies causing their body to be acidic and adding stress to their immune system function. The two main reasons for this is
1) People are putting hugh amounts of toxins (mostly unknowingly) in their bodies on a regular basis and
2) their elimination channels are clogged, slow or sluggish.
3) toxins like "junk" food, medications(drugs), sugars, excess alcohol, allergens all stress your immune system, thus making it weak and unable to fight the germs when exposed to them.

Nutritional Deficiency:
When your body lacks nutrition, you will have a weak immune system.
Since our bodies can not produce nutrients needed for optimal health, quality food plays a major factor in keeping our cells healthy and our immune system strong. Food not only provides energy to your body, but all the nutrients that are essential for a healthy immune system.

Lack of drinking healthy water:
Dehydration means the cells just simply do not have enough fluid. Dehydration cause medical problems including pain, arthritis, asthma, and allergies, among other medical issues. It can affect your energy and your sleep, and the ability to get toxins/waste material out of the body.

Lack of physical activity:
Lack of regular, moderate exercise appears to slow down cleansing the body of certain toxins and waste products

Lack of sufficient rest:
lack of sleep will stress your immune system and thus increase the risk of catching a bug.
The good news is that I think you can help control or reverse your condition by doing as many as possible of the following list.

The good news is you can strengthen your immune system by doing as many of the following list as possible....

1) keep practicing good personal hygiene care, wash your hands!

2) get plenty of rest. During deep sleep, our body release potent immune-enhancing substances that strengthen your immune system function. By not allowing our body sufficient rest, the immune system will sputter, and as a result, not function at full capacity. We then are more likely to become ill with common illnesses. A healthy, deep sleep allows our body to release a significant amount of growth hormone that boost the immune system and aids in the growth and repair of the body.

3) get moderate and regular exercise
An increase in blood flow associated with moderate exercise helps to circulate antibodies along with white blood cells necessary to fight infection more quickly. As a result, this provides our bodies with an early warning system to ward off potentially damaging germs. In addition, the increase in body temperature as a result of physical activity may aid in inhibiting the growth of bacteria; thus allowing the body to fight infection more effectively.

4) Receiving a Regular Body Cleansing.
Body cleansing is essential because our bodies need to properly eliminate the toxic build up that has formed in our intestines (colon), which may lead to sickness and disease. Our body organs and tissues must be free of toxins for the immune system to function optimally thus enabling our bodies to receive the essential nutrients our bodies need.

5) Boost immune system by drinking plenty of filtered water.
Water is essential for all living things and keeps our immune system operating optimally while improving the way we feel, look and live. Without sufficient amounts of water, you may experience routine fatigue, dry skin, headaches, constipation, and a decrease normal bodily function which may lead to your body unable to fight off diseases. Without water we would literally dehydrate which could result in the shutting down of vital organs and ultimately end in death.

6) Eliminate all sugar and allergens from your diet.
Just a small amount of sugar has been proven to impair white blood cells up to 50% for very short periods of time. By discovering what our personal food allergies are, then eliminating or desensitizing them will help strengthen your immune system. By removing these triggers, our immune cells are strengthened in order to combat other invaders such as influenza rather than the allergen. The elimination of sugar from your diet can also strengthen immune system.

7) Eat nutritiously
Good foods to eat include organic fruits and vegetables, chloretta, medicinal mushrooms like maitake, shiitake, reishi, or turkey tail. Besides water, wheatgrass juice, aloe vera juice, or green tea are good drinks. My favorite is MonaVie juice.

8) Take supplements
Supplements are needed because our bodies can not produce the nutrients necessary to maintain optimum health. There are many nutrients needed in order to maintain a strong immune syste

For your personal opinion, was Ivan Padilla killed or otherwise?

delive_ran

For those who do not know Ivan Padilla, he is the head of the notorious group of car jackets who was recently gun down by the NCR anti-carnapping
squad headed by Col. Manalo(02 Aug). There was partly a video tape of Ivan inside a vehicle belonging to the police after the incident. Interviewed by a news station before they left for the hospital. Ivan is still alive. He was pronounce DOA. Autopsy report he died of asphysia. I know some of you don't care, it is just for your opinion, for me he was killed literally on the way to the hospital either by a cord or a hand choke. Para sa mga pulis papatayin din lamang bakit hindi pa sa shoot out which more legitimate than appearing to relieve the guy to the hospital and finding him dead. Magkakaruon pa ng issue at innuendo sa mga tao. To me these people deserve to die, they are considered menace to society or in Tagalog "salot ng lipunan". But not in the manner that bring us to become savage. What do you think?

Answer
"DEAD MAN TELL NO TALES"

Think about this: Everytime there is a shoot-out between the police/NBI and notorious criminals (car jackers; kidnappers; bank robbers; hold-uppers; akyat bahay), the leader always ends up DEAD!
Why? Their connections or financiers or handlers from the authorities will be singled out if he will be left alive.

Ivan Padilla was strangled to death with strong bare hands or arm while he was being "rushed" to the hospital. According to forensic expert, Dr. Fortun, the bones that support his tongue were broken due to some pressure of a thing. The one who did this is an expert on this job. The wounds on his head were only superficial and Ivan can survive this.

Watch out for the bulky man wearing sando who rode with Ivan during the time he was taken to the hospital!

how do I find out who owns a 30 year old car by the vin number?

Sherron

I have a car with no title and no information, I would like to get a title. It is 30 years old no one knows who the pre-owner was. I need this info for free. I tried to check the vin# (it is 13 numbers) but they said the vin must be at least 17 numbers?

Answer
Sounds like the car has been abandoned? You can take the VIN# or plate number to the DMV or AAA Auto CLub to see if it's reported stolen, has a lien on it or any unpaid fees.
Older cars only had 13 VIN#'s.
In California:
If it hasn't been registered for 4 years or more, then the cars info will have "fallen off" record and no longer be in the computer data bank. This is a vehicle with Unavailable Records.
If the cars value is $4999 or less:
Then the diligent effort process in NOT required
Any documentation that establishes ownership of the car is acceptable.
If the chain of ownership is incomplete, the new owner must complete REG 256 Statement of Facts stating:From whom the car was acquired
The current value of car, and that the car is free of any liens
If car value is $5000+ then you need to follow Due Diligence proceedure in the form of a certified letter sent to the last known owners address.

16 years old, any car recommendations?

Pranay

Right, Im 16 years old and im buying a car. Im looking for a good, reliable used car around 20k dollars. I'd prefer a 2-door but honestly I just want a car thats looks good, however I also want things like Leather Seats, preferably a multimedia display but thats not too necessary, and other small luxury features. Paying for insurance isn't too big of a deal for me, but don't recommend me some V8 muscle car that will destroy my insurance bill. I am a very careful driver in all honesty, gotta 3.85 GPA, and taken drivers ed. I've done most of my driving in a S-Class Mercedes and a Toyota Sienna minivan so im pretty good with big vehicles. Gas mileage isn't to big of a problem as long as its 17+ in the city. Thank you for any feedback!

Mazda Miata (least recommended of the list): http://www.cars.com/for-sale/searchresults.action?stkTyp=U&tracktype=usedcc&mkId=20073&AmbMkId=20073&AmbMkNm=Mazda&make=Mazda&AmbMdNm=Miata%20MX-5&model=Miata%20MX-5&mdId=21460&AmbMdId=21460&prMx=20000&rd=100000&zc=33156&searchSource=QUICK_FORM&enableSeo=1

To avoid confusion: the Camaro, Challenger and Mustang are not V8 muscle cars, these are V6 models. The same goes for the Chrysler 300.

If MPG is a very decisive factor, I'd make sure to get a Japanese or German car.

Good luck and enjoy your car!

What isUconnect Access System?

CarquoteAS

Itâs been a while since we did a story on in- car infotainment systems, probably because of the growing concern for distracted driving that has made not only headlines, but spawned a long list of commercials running on TV. In fact the problem has spilled over into what is being called distracted walking, people being injured while walking and texting on cell phones. Be that as it may, Chrysler is making news with their Uconnect Access system, which will reportedly see itâs way into cars next year.
Currently the industry is seeing â¦

Answer
It's something that has nothing to do with insurance. And, your inserted news is old. My car already has Uconnect in it which simply connects my phone to the car....but it's kind of a crappy system. It doesn't recognize vocal commands, it can't connect to iPhones or iPods like it's supposed to be able to do, and if you play music and try connecting it through BlueTooth, it sounds like it's being fast forwarded.

But, if you get an incoming call and hit the answer button three times, you can have a conversation with someone. So, that part works....kinda.

What is the fastest street legal car in the world?

samm95

Answer
It would be very hard to find the fastest street-legal car in the world, since there are so many one-off custom cars. For instance, the VRAlexander's Carrera GT with 2800 hp. See more about his car in the Streetfire video if you can find it.

I see some already know the fastest fastest street-legal production car in the world to be the SSC Ultimate Aero (in terms of achieved top speed).
It has 1183 hp, 1094 lb-ft. torque, goes from 0-60 in 2.78 seconds,
and has an estimated top speed of 270+ mph, although only about 257.41 mph was achieved on the 2½-mile-long road.
SSC plans to make an attempt for the Ultimate Aero to achieve its true top speed sometime in the future on a longer road.
In my opinion, the Ultimate Aero looks cooler than the Veyron (especially the regular model--the Pur Sang looks a lot better than the base one). Others disagree. However, the price of the Aero's approximate $650,000 price tag compared to the Veyron's $1.3 million+ shows a large difference. This comes partly because the Veyron was built more as a luxury car that's really fast, while the Ultimate Aero was designed as more of a sports car/supercar. The Veyron has some more sophisticated machinery, such as its airbrake/wing and other interior things, but interestingly enough, it lacks a touchscreen infotainment system, while the Ultimate Aero has one. If the Veyron didn't have around 1000 hp and have all-wheel drive, it wouldn't be anywhere near as fast as it is, because it weighs a lot.

Koenigsegg and Bugatti have to fight for the "second fastest" title, with cars such as Koenigsegg's CCXR and CCXR Edition and Bugatti's famed Veyron.

Recently, someone said that Bugatti will end production of the Veyron with a GT model with more horsepower and a top speed of 260, making it the fastest car in the world again.
However, even if that is correct, I doubt it would beat the Ultimate Aero, since the full potential of the car has yet to be unleashed, and is much lighter than the Veyron.
But in case the Veyron GT (if it is to be made) beats the Ultimate Aero, SSC will likely just turn up the boost on their car, as it is only running 14 p.s.i. right now.

And the incredible claims that the Barabus TKR can accelerate from 0-60 in 1.67 seconds and has a top speed of 270 mph HAVE YET TO BE VERIFIED, so for the moment those claims are only rumors.
If they are verified, the Ultimate Aero will likely still have a higher top speed, but if not, a simple increase of boost should fix that.

Headline: "SSC makes 'World's Fastest Car' again by boosting Ultimate Aero's horsepower to 1250 hp" or something like that. Wouldn't that be kind of funny? (it would probably make the other guys frustrated)

What is the fastest car in the world?

I'm not sure what the best car ever made is, but the fastest "car" in the world is the twin jet-engined Thrust SSC, which set the world land-speed record at 763 mph.

Wouldn't that be rather funny?

Am I at Fault? (Car Wreck Need More Info.)?

Thomas

So I was driving my car on a straight road in front of my school. I miss a turn and decide I need to turn around. I see a parking space to the left of me (I'm driving down the right side of the road). I'm about to make a U-turn like maneuver into the parking space. I forgot to put my blinker on but I was going pretty slow (Brake lights were on). She tries to pass me in a Double yellow bars road (No passing road). And hits the front end of my car as she [SWERVES] off into the other side of the road, and onto the sidewalk / fence. There are NO brake marks or any sign of slowing down when she hit me on the road which indicates she WAS trying to pass me because she was speeding up. I was driving an Un-insured car (I know that's my fault I'm not complaining about that) But I want to know if I'm at fault and what you think will happen please (I'm not rich or anything and there is no way I can pay for their car, Which is insured). They called the cops immediately, and the cop (My school resource officer) says that it was my fault though, but I don't think he got the entire story correct, plus, I'm not sure if she got a ticket yet. No one was hurt (Thankfully). I already got Two tickets, I'm just wondering if I will have to pay for her car.

Answer
Without a doubt, it was your fault. You slowed down and probably drifted to the right (so you could make the U turn) so the car behind you sped up to get around you as quick as possible. As they were going around you, you made a U turn (over double yellow....illegal) and got struck by the passing car.
Be glad you didnt get a ticket for the illegal U turn.
Chances are you will loose your license with this one compounded on top of 2 tickets.
If you are under 18, YOUR PARENTS will be liable for all the damages that you caused to the other vehicle. If they do not agree to fix it, they can (and probably will) get sued.

where can I find a good used alpha omega car seat?

Matt's

they cost a lot of money brand new!! I also like the britax car seats too!

Answer
Hi! Saw your post and just wanted to pass along a little info. Its actually unsafe to get a used car seat unless it is coming from a trusted friend or relative and you are 100% positive:
1)it has never been in any wreck
2)it has all the original pieces, including manual
3)it has never been dropped, which means never been checked as luggage at the airport, either, since this frequently happens when checked or gate checked .
4)it is less than 6 years old
5)the straps have never been completely submerged or washed with anything other than mild soap(it messes up the flame retardent treatment)

If you wouldn't trust the seller with your child's life, don't buy a car seat from them. For $40 you can get a Cosco Scenera from Walmart. It rear faces to a whopping 35lbs, which is important b/c kids should stay rear facing as long as possible, the American Academy of Pediatrics says keep them rear facing preferably for their first 2 years of life. Then it goes to 40lbs front facing. It won't last child as long forward facing as some others, but for $40, its a great deal. Or, call your local police station and ask about car seats. Most have programs in place to give free/inexpensive car seat to families that need them. As for how expensive they are, I wish they weren't so expensive, either, however, a car seat tech put it into good perspective for me. Think of other things you have bought recently. How many times you've eaten out, gone to the movies, rented movies, bought new clothes/shoes/jewelry, gotten hair done, that new flat screen/plasma TV, etc. whatever it is. Cut back on some things and you can manage to get a safe seat for your child. After all, its more important.

On another point, about the Alpha Omega seats: So...knowing all that, here's some about specific seats. Please don't get a Graco Comfort Sport. Car seat techs call it the 'crappysport'. LOL Its a crappy seat that won't last your child very long b/c it has a really short shell. The straps twist all the time, and if they're twisted they won't support your child in a wreck properly. They're hard to install. There's nothing good about these seats except perhaps they're cheap sometimes. Ditto the Safety1st 3-in-1/Cosco Alpha Omega/Eddie Bauer 3-in1 seats. These are all the same company - same seat, just different covers. They stink. Hard to install, b/c of narrow belt paths. Ever tried to wash a skinny cup by hand? Now imagine that skinny cup with pointy edges. That's what putting your hand through these to install them is like. AND they have too short a shell to really go to 40lbs. And they do not make good boosters. Also, most kids have to use boosters until they're at least 8 years old. Car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture, so no matter what they say it is NOT the last seat you'll ever need to buy.

Here are some GREAT seats to look at:
The Britax Marathon/Boulevard/Decathalon (These 3 are the same seat, just different variances of luxury additions, with the Marathon being the cheapest base model) can be found for regular price of $269, and on sale at Albee Baby online for $209-$219. The Marathon a wide open easy to route belt path, which makes using it correctly a lot easier, as do the built in lockoffs, which mean you never again have to use a locking clip. I can get it into 4 different vehicles in under 2 minutes. Because of the way the base is made, it fits in most cars. And, it is worth the money, b/c it lasts usually twice as long as most other car seats (all car seats expire 6 years after the date of manufacture) lasting a baby till they are 5-6 years old, where most at Walmart will only last till 2-4 years old. Rear faces to 33lbs, then forward to 65lbs. and top slots 17inches tall, lasts most kids to ages 5-6 years old.

The Evenflo Triumph Advance (not the original Triumph, make sure it says Advance) is a great seat. $150 version at Babies R Us has padding similar to Britax seats, top slots of 17", harnesses to 35lbs rear facing, and 50lbs forward facing. $120 Walmart version just has little less plush padding. Wide open belt path, easy to install, though it doesn't have built in lockoffs. The harness adjusts at the front of the car seat, you don't have to take the car seat out of the car just to raise/lower the straps. It's one of only 2 seats that does this (The Britax Boulevard is the other, I believE), and it has infinite harness adjustment so the harness always fits perfectly until its outgrown. No more tugging straps to tighten them either. You tighten and loosen the harness using knobs on the side of the seat. As a major bonus, it can be used in a recline position even in forward facing mode. Awesome for kids who still sleep in the car. I LOVE THIS SEAT! LOL My son, who is too big for every other car seat at Walmart has the same amount of room in this as the Britax Marathon.

The Fisher Price Safe Voyage Deluxe Convertible seat is great, it is made by Britax, without all the frills. It's the same shell as a Marathon, but for less than half the price. $130 at Albee Baby online with free shipping, or at their eBay name, babysurplus. Rear faces to 33lbs, forward to 55lbs. Easy to use, f

Are problems with 2010 to 2012 ford fusion transmissions isolated events OR a universal defect?

Joel S

Trying to determine risk of buying 2011 Ford fusion SE. Many cases reported online across many sources stating the transmission failed prematurely in 2010 to 2012 cars. Does anyone know the percent of vehicle transmission failures if the failures are isolated incidences? OR, are these failures not an IF event but a WHEN event in that they will occur to ALL transmissions in these cars eventually ? Thank you!

Answer
Hey Joel S,

Your concerns may be well founded if based on internet information. However, let me assure you these are isolated events, and we strive to address any concerns brought to our attention by owners.

Since 2010 the Fusion has received numerous accolades. Here are a few for your consideration:

2010 Model Year
⢠âDriving is unexpectedly fun, with good turn-in and more lateral grip than an economically priced family sedan ever should have!â â RoadandTrack.com, 12/08
2011 Model Year
⢠âMost car reviewers agree that the 2011 Ford Fusion is ideal for small families. It is practical for city drivers, looks good, prioritizes safety, doesnât waste fuel and wonât break the bank.â â U.S. News & World Report
2012 Model Year
⢠âMost Dependable Mid-size Carâ available according to J.D. Power and Associates

And the excitement continues with the 2013 Fusion, which will be hitting the North American markets in late fall! To quote MotorTrend: âFordâs all-new Fusion brings alive the next generation of more expressive vehicles from Ford and is the first sedan to offer gasoline, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions.â

So, when you have an opportunity, visit the local Ford dealer for a demo drive, and put to rest any qualms about owning a Fusion.

Why do so many people bash Fox news?

Q. Are people just threatened by the truth about OWS or something? Maybe many of these people never watch it because if they did they would see that these protestors are nothing but a bunch of hippies who sit around playing the drums and bitch about how much money the rich make. That's all the movement is about people!! It's just about jealousy like Hermain Cain said!! These protestors are also crapping on cop cars, raping women, destroying property, etc just because there are people who make more money than they do and no other reason.

How Easy Would It Be To Get From Stanley To Corbridge?

specialchi

Im thinking of applying for a job in Corbridge, Northumberland but i live in Stanley County Durham, as i dont have a car i would need to take public transport. How long would it take to get their by bus? And what bus would i need to get? It would be a 6am start! Would i make it? I've tried to look it up myself and failed. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Answer
I tried looking this journey up on the Directgov journey planner http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/DG_10036717 but it seems the journey would take about 2 hours and involves at least one change ... it says you have to go all the way into Newcastle to get the Arriva Northumbria service 685 to Carlisle which goes through Corbridge !!! ... and it certainly doesn't start early in the morning ... sounds like you would need your own transport to be able to get to this job

Where to turn for help financially, in Europe?

Aija

I donât know where to turn for help for one of my friends in Latvia, my best friend; Laila. She is in terrible distress! She cries every day; she does not know where to get the help that she needs. She needs almost two thousand dollars. The reason for that is because she was not able to pay for her apartment, for a few months. She has no clothes, but the ones on her; she has a daughter and she is running out of clothes to wear, because she is growing, she is three years old. I have asked around, there is no help.
She has three days left, before she has to go to court, please give some ideas, and donât be mean, you will get reported.

PS. I did not find the right category, so please forgive me that it is not in the right place.

Answer
I dont know of the laws in Latvia, but here in the UK we have things like the 'Citizens advice Bureau' and Directgov would give child support.

I am sorry that I cannot be of much help, my only advice is that you look for local charities to help with clothing for the child and food etc

Extreme I know but the only thing I can think of off the top of my head other than more illegal sexual related things are for her to do egg donation.
Does she have any skills? If she does then to use these to sell whatever service she can provide. Does she work? more info needed to know what resources she has that can be utilized.

Im sorry but cannot think of a way in 3 days to get £2000, even loans and things would take more than 3 days to go through. Does she have a car, could she sell things that will add up to £2000?

buying a car and i need to know what are the procedures to buying a car owner to owner? (paying cash)

Answer
Finding out what's wrong with that used car before you buy
Everyone buying a used car should get an Experian AutoCheck Vehicle History Report, they get data from a substantial number of dealers and aftermarket repair shops, nearly 5,000 sources. A mechanic can put the car on a lift and instantly spot previous crash damage, hidden frame damage, corrosion, and fluid leaks. But your mechanic can't tell you if your car title has been branded as a flooded vehicle, salvaged, junked, rebuilt, stolen, or passed through a salvage auction. Most mechanics overlook airbags. You can only tell how many owners that car had or where it's been with a history report, not just by looking at the car. This is not the time to 2nd guess. Unfortunately there are no clear laws if you sign an "As Is" paper. Any used car can have a bad past, Mercedes, Lexus, Honda or Toyota. Some municipalities don't supply accident report info, that's why you still need to have a mechanic look at it. If the police never made a report, it won't show up in the AutoCheck Vehicle History Report.
People ask "What's the Blue Book value of my trade-in?" The Blue Book value of your car is the market value listed in the Kelley Blue Book. Many people spell it wrong as Kelly Blue Book or Kelly's Blue Book or Kellys Blue Book or even NADA Blue Book or KBB. KBB started from a family owned used car business that bought trade-ins from auto dealers and used their internally generated list of used car prices to inform dealers how much the car was worth. They became trusted industry insiders and appraisers of car values. This led to Kelley Blue Book, named after the social register, called a blue book. The rest is history. KBB supplies used car prices to most car pricing sites. Dealers laugh when you tell them you know the Kelley Blue Book Value of your trade in. I think blue book car prices show trade-in values lower than other sources, which falsely leads you to accept less for your car then it is worth. Use other sites in addition to Kelly Blue Book to price cars. Most car dealers use the yellow NADA book to price used cars.
Start Working On The Seller
Have your partner be negative, pointing out every little item that erodes away at the seller's asking price, and confidence. A great tactic with huge psychological impact is to rub your finger over every major scratch or dimple, and shake your head no in disappointment. The car dealers use this all the time, so learn from the best. You don't have to say a word, the seller reads it right off your face, and you've set him up for the low ball offer. Have your partner write down all damage.
Ask for the maintenance records. Bet he'll have nothing at all. This is why I tell you to save every record, and oil change receipt in a notebook. Just add each new one to the end, and you have a nice history record. Now buyers of your car years later can't say you did not take good care of your car. Ask if the car has been in a wreck, staring them right in the eyes waiting for their answer. If the answer is yes, inspect the area that was repaired, and point out every tiny little flaw in that repair.
Test Drive The Seller's Used Car
Take the seller with you and ask questions when noises pop up. Listen for noises, rattles, or grinding sounds. If you hear rattling in the quarter panels, the car may have been in a wreck. If the car is a manual transmission, see if the shifting is smooth. Ask the seller if the clutch has been replaced, clutches fail after 4-5 years. This sets up the seller for a low ball offer. Most people are unaware that manual transmission vehicles have lower market values than automatic. Check the heater and the A/C, drive it in the daylight when the sun is hottest, to see how the A/C performs. Listen for grinding noises when the A/C kicks in, the bearings in the compressor are worn.
If the car has a voltmeter, make sure the voltage stays at 13.6 volts when the A/C is on. Bring a portable volt meter with you. Not everyone has one, many people do. You can get them for $20. Measure the voltage across the battery terminals with the engine running, and the meter set to DC Voltage. The voltage should be at least 13.6 Volts with the engine running, and no more than 14.8 volts. If it's not, there is a problem with the charging circuit, most likely the alternator, which is a costly component, usually about $150 rebuilt. If the battery is not at least 13.6V with the engine on, the 12V battery will not remain charged, and will die soon.
Drive with the radio on and off. Test the speakers to see if they are cracked. Make sure the CD player works. Take the car on a highway, main streets, and side streets, see if the car loses alignment, or bears to the left or right. See how good the car brakes, drive sharply around some corners, and your companion is writing everything down. Make sure all the seat belts work, that electric seats work, look for missing or burned out bulbs inside and out. If the car has retractable headlights, make sure they pop up and turn on. Make sure the brake lights, reverse lights and directional lights work. Ask the seller when the brake pads were last replaced.

"What kind of research did you do to determine what your car is worth?
Show me your research printouts, I have all mine right here, where's yours?"
I bet the seller has no research may be arrogant and indignant over your offer. They are unaware their asking price is off base, they get infuriated with your "low ball offer", and may refuse to deal with you. They probably need the money, the car is taking up space in their driveway, their wife complains every day as he lets offers slip through his fingers. His pride won't let him sell the car at your price. He'll say, "why don't you buy one of those other cars if they are cheaper? If my car is not worth it, why do you want it at all?" It's their last ditch futile effort to justify their price. He's trying to divert you from the fact that he cannot justify his selling price. Any seller using this strategy has just told you he has no valid research on the value of the car. A seller who knows the market value would say "Here's my printouts from the car pricing sites, my price is in line with accepted standards". Tell him "We like your car, but the research we have shows that it is not worth your asking price", point out all the defects, lack of maintenance records, etc. Tell him the printouts specify a car in good condition. Point out scratches, dings, rust, carpet stains, cracked dash, justification to offer even less than the car pricing printouts. Keep hammering him for his research and justification until you are the clear victor of that debate.

What is the best infant car seat for a 2 door car?

Danielle H

Me and my husband have a small car it's a 2 door mercury cougar and we need to fit an infant car seat in the back what is the best car seat for that type of car? and getting a four door car is not an option.

Answer
Actually - car seat experts will tell you Consumer Reports is NOT the place to go for info on car seats! CR is great for a lot of things, car seats is not one of them.

CPSTs (car seat techs) do not think highly of Consumer Reports, so they're not really the ones you want to check. Also, All seats in the US must meet the same safety criteria to sell, so technically they all are safe, however, if its hard to install, then it won't be used correctly and that makes it unsafe. Also, they only must meet the guidelines, some seats barely pass, some exceed them. And Consumer Reports doesn't disclose that info, or how they test. They're so hush hush about all their methods that it makes their ratings very suspicious.

The NHTSA website has ease of use ratings, which is somewhat important b/c the easier a seat is to use the more likely you are to use it correctly. However, these have to be taken with a grain of salt to - looking at that list it is often very difficult to figure how they got their results. This is very important, if a seat is used incorrectly, it will not protect your child. Over 80% of car seats are installed or used improperly!

All that said - you might reconsider whether you really want an infant carrier using a 2 door car. I've had a 2 door Civic Coupe since before my now 3 year old son was born. I found it a HUGE pain to constantly try and fit the carrier in and out of the backseat, it was a tight squeeze to get it in between the front and backseat, even with the front pushed all the way forward. Would've been easier to do what I did once he got a rear facing convertible: his seat was on the back passenger side, and I'd climb in the back driver's side, sit next to his seat and put him in. Was faster and easier and didn't leave me standing out in bad weather fighting with getting his carrier back in the car.

Contrary to popular US notion, infant carrier car seats are NOT a required stage in car seats. Newborns can go home from the hospital in a rear facing convertible seat, as long as the slots are short enough.

as a single parent on a seriously limited income, I now realize I should've completely skipped the infant carrier stage. Its not a 'needed' stage in car seats, its just a convenience thing, and a recent - as in the last 15 years or so - invention to have a stay in car base and separate carrier. Here's why I think its a waste: doesn't last babies very long at all. You spend $60 and up on this carrier that is only going to last 5-8 months! And then you have to purchase a convertible car seat, and somewhere down the line a booster seat. If you skip the carrier phase, you just eliminated one seat. There is now one carrier on the market that promises to fit 99% of babies up to at least their first birthday - Graco SafeSeat1, goes to 30lbs. However, there are limitations to this awesome seat. It really will fit most kids that long, but that's a catch-22. You really going to carry your 25lbs baby in a carrier?! And, the recline can not be adjusted when its installed in the car. Newborns have to be rear facing and reclined 45 degrees. Older babies who can hold their heads up well can be 30-45 degrees, and most want to so they can see more. So your baby may come to hate the SafeSeat at some point b/c he can't sit up any straighter, but then again, maybe not. You never know. Also - b/c it is a bigger seat to last longer, it doesn't always fit well in smaller vehicles. Try before you buy. My son was a BIG baby (still is a BIG kid!) and outgrew his carrier at 4 months. And, after baby gets above 10lbs or so, they are a pain in the butt to carry - quite awkward. So its not as convenient as it may at first seem. And some of the 'convenient' ways people use them aren't good.
Carriers should NEVER be placed on grocery carts. It makes the carts unstable and they can tip over, seriously injuring the baby. Also, not all car seats fit all carts, and they don't lock on, they're just sitting there, posing an obvious threat. And some of the carts are shaped or sized in a way that it puts the carrier at an unsafe/uncomfortable angle for the baby. I've seen babies laying in carriers on carts with their head lower than their feet - not a good idea for digestion or spit up.
The American Academy of Pediatrics says Parents and caregivers should never Place an infant carrier on top of the shopping cart. "Many infant-only car safety seats lock into shopping carts, and many stores have shopping carts with built-in infant seats. This may seem safe, but thousands of children are hurt every year from falling out of shopping carts or from the carts tipping over. Instead of placing your baby's car safety seat on the cart, consider using a stroller or front pack while shopping with your baby. "

Also, we are seeing rampant developmental delays becuase babies are in these carriers (and swings, and bouncy seats...) so much. Look around everywhere you go and instead of holding their babies, people have them in these carriers. When on their back and harnessed (and any time a child is in a carrier, he needs to be harnessed, even though its not in a car!) they can not work the muscles they need to develop to crawl, sit up, and walk. In the manuals for these carriers, it even says specifically 'for use in cars and strollers only'! But we all seem to miss that part.

So I highly recommend skipping the carrier phase. I think they are more a pain than a blessing, and a wasted of money if you don't have a lot to throw around. Instead, get a convertible car seat that will fit a newborn (more on that later) and a sling, pouch, or wrap. Not one of those silly snugli or infantino carriers, but something like a ringsling, moby, or maya wrap. Wearing your baby gives everybody what they need. Babies get much needed closeness to mom (or dad, or anyone else for that matter!) and you get your hands free to do what you need to do, as well as you can even breastfeed in one! They offer many different positions to use them in, too, and go higher than carrier car seat weights (20-22lbs). Most go to at least 35lbs, so you will get much more use out of it for your money.

OK - so if you choose to skip the carrier phase, be careful about the convertible car seat you choose, b/c not all will fit newborns well. You want it to have low bottom slots.
Perfect options:

Cosco Scenera - $50 at Walmart/Kmart/Target. Great seat for the price. Goes up to 35lbs rear facing, 40lbs forward facing. Great rear facing seat, but is outgrown very quickly forward facing b/c of short top slots and short shell. You'll still get you're $50 worth out of it, though, as it will last most kids to at least 2 years, quadruple the amount of time of an infant seat!

As you're shopping, remember these rules about seats:
1)the BEST seat is the one that fits your child, fits your car, and will be used correctly 100% of the time. (This is why convenience features DO make a difference and ARE worth the money! If its easy to use, you're more likely to use it correctly.
2)Children should stay rear facing AS LNOG AS POSSIBLE!!!! The 20lbs/1 year rule is outdated and provides a bare minimum for turning kids forward facing. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration both recommend keeping kids rear facing as long as possible, up to the limits of their seat, preferably until at least 2 years of age. For good reason: A forward-facing child under 2 years old is 4 times more likely to be killed or seriously injured in a crash than a rear-facing child of the same age. A child's vertabrae do not fully fuse until 3-6 years old, before then, she is at great risk for internal decapitation. The spinal column can stretch up to 2 inches in a crash BUT the spinal cord can only stretch up to 1/4 inch before it snaps and baby is gone. In other countries, rear facing 2 - 3 - 4 year olds is standard, they understand that its safer. Here, we turn them as soon as we get to, seeing it as a right of passage thing or something. Ridiculous. Most convertible seats have a 30lbs rear facing limit, Cosco/Dorel/Safety1st/Eddie Bauer seats rear face to 35lbs, Britax rear faces to 33lbs.
3)Once you do turn them forward facing, they need to stay in a 5 point harness as long as possible. 4 years/40lbs is the minimum for riding in a booster, and most 4 year olds have no business using one yet. If they can't sit upright for an entire trip, they need the harness of a car seat still. And, even if they do sit properly, a 5 point harness is safer, so you want to keep them in one as long as possible. This is important to consider b/c most car seats only forward face to 40lbs. My son just turned 3, and is in the 95th% for height and w

CAR QUESTION- Lease Info!!?

Jessica

I am looking to lease a new car. My lease is up in August. (Right now I have a 2010 Nissan Altima- although I have had no problems with any Nissan, I am looking to switch to a different brand because my last 3 cars have been Nissan's too).

Because this is a second car, I am not looking to spend too too much. For a lease, nothing over 265 MAX! But, I am looking for something nice, sharp looking, smooth driving, and as luxurious as possible. Car brands don't really matter all that much to me- but like I said, keeping it within a budget is the most important thing right now.

I have heard from several friends that these cars are great:

1) Acura TSX
2) Acura ILX
3) Kia Optima/Hybrid
4) VW Passat
5) Hyundai Sonata

Please list any other suggestions you may have and give any insight you might have on the cars above!!

Keep in mind- I am looking for a 4 door car that has reasonably good gas mileage. This car will be a 2013 and I am looking to do a 36 month lease.

Please list your experience/what you pay (if you don't mind) to help me out a bit further!

THANK YOU THANK YOU!! 10 Points BEST ANSWER !!!!!

Answer
It is my belief that Acura brand of automobiles are not fuel efficient. Not advertised as such and make no claim to that effect. You also indicate friends have spoken to you. You also indicate you have done no research on your own. Not good. This type of approach is not acceptable. A decision matrix is easy enough to do. Simply draw a typical X/Y chart with boxes to indicate factors and values. Four doors, fuel range of MPGs, cost, appearance. You find cars that YOU like. Appoint values and then compare by numbers or use the numbers for judgment and a car shall be the obvious winner. But to ask people as to :nice, sharp looking, luxurious, very general AND subjective values, is not correct. This is personal and this is based on your taste. The only car with exceptional fuel mileage is the Kia Optima hybrid. IF that is more important that other factor then you select that feature as most important. If looks is more then what ever car touches your heart then that is the feature, etc. But asking here is not my concept of approaching this correctly. For a second car your aspirations seem very high. Good luck on the hunt.

Why did Chinese Industrial Stocks skyrocket on the Hong Kong market with news of the Bush Borrow and Give ???

Guerilla L

What a great boom to Chinese Business. Bush is borrowing money from China to buy Chinese products from WallMart.

Answer
Disparage WalMart? Why, the founder of such a corporation gave many million to the Republican cause to keep corporate welfare flowing. Is it no accident you MUST use a car to shop at Walmart to bring home a crate of one Chinese product?

It's sad there ain't no patriotism in the Bush years.

How can I watch the Young & the Restless while living in Hong Kong?

mrwobbles2

TV in Hong Kong basically sucks. I get to watch a few US shows from last season and several seasons before. The only soaps that show here are the Bold & Beautiful (about 3-4 months behind US) and General Hospital (which I don't normally watch...maybe I should start, at least it'll be something new!) Any suggestions...besides get a life and stop watching TV?

Answer
You can watch them online at

http://www.cbs.com/daytime/yr/video/

This is great! Especially since CBS likes to pre-empt my soaps for any kind of news conference or car chase...

malaysia driving licence?

kirstine L

can i drive a singapore car using my malaysia driving licence in malaysia?

Answer
Hi

For Malaysian or Singapore PR, you'll need to check with JPJ as recently there is a news which says that for Malaysian who converted their Malaysia license to Singapore license, they'll need to surrender their Malaysia license to Malaysia authority. Which means, they can only have 1 license.

So, if you drive a singapore registration cars, that means you can only show your Singapore license upon request and not malaysia license or else you could end up in some trouble with Malaysian authority.

But, if you drive a Malaysian cars, no problem showing either your SIngapore or Malaysia driving license. Remember, you can only show it to the either one as we are not allowed to hold 2 driving license.

In your country, what kind of matter is reported in Facebook?

Noriko

I am a Japanese.
Japanese often upload something to Facebook. But the contents is very boring. 90% of them is photos of lunch or dinner, his/her babyâs photos. Remaining 10% is reports such as on a beach with their lover. Thatâs it.

Iâm bloody fed up with those photos and reports!
Iâm not interested in them at all, if not dislike.
But I must âlikeâ them not to be disliked.
Many of Japanese feel like me.
Japanese disposition, very strong homogenous, makes this foolish situation, I think.

I wish I could shatter all facebook-installed computers and cellphones in Japan!

Then, how is your countryâs situation about Facebook?
Is it much more joyful than Japanâs mentioned above?

Answer
From India,
Same as above. It's depends on the kind of friends you have. 60 % does the above among my friends.

other than that Indians upload lots about cricket, Cinema news, cars, bikes, games, gym, thrilling videos.

IPL is more famous here lots of conversation about that.

Facebook here is not good in terms of your view ,me too hate face book ! as every wants to show them off to get more likes and comments! Other than I like info updated from pages I liked!

English majors: a ship that (sic) "crashed"? Does this bother you?

dave h

The following misuse of the English language is from a Yahoo news article on 19 Sept:

"FORT MORGAN, Alabama (AP) -- When the waves from Hurricane Ike receded, they left behind a mystery -- a ragged shipwreck that archeologists say could be a two-masted Civil War schooner that ran aground in 1862 ... [fine so far] ...

Researchers ... identified it as the Monticello, a battleship that partially burned when it crashed trying to get past the U.S. Navy and into Mobile Bay during the Civil War."

How can a ship crash???

Not only that, the ship almost certainly did not "crash and burn"; if anything it ran aground at probably the gentle speed of 6 or 7 mph (6 knots maybe). It might have caught fire from the grounding but more likely it was atacked by U.S. Navy warships and set afire by shell fire.

Answer
The problem is not the choice of words. That is merely a symptom of a lazy reporter, something journalism schools are churning out en-masse these days.

The word 'crashed' is technically accurate. A ship can certainly crash into something, but the usage of the word has become so common (car crashes, plane crashes), that few bother to question what exactly was crashed into - they just accept the word on its face. It lets the lazy writer get by without having to say more, which would require doing research. A more accurate term is 'collided', but using that word immediately begs the question "With what?", something that 'crashed' doesn't do. I suspect that the writer didn't know what the ship collided with, because the incident wasn't researched.

Perhaps the ship collided with other ships while trying to 'run a blockade'. Perhaps it merely 'crashed' onto whatever particular underwater land it ran aground on. Either way, it 'crashed'. It's still a poor choice of words, but, I repeat, it's a symptom of a larger problem.

How can I find news article on friends fatal car accident?

Shalylla

My friend was killed in a crash in South carolina on 12/20/08. Not sure of the city. But her bf was sent to a local hosp. with lacerated liver. any help would, help. I dont feel right asking all the gory details from the family but I need to know for my own closure.

Answer
I spoke w/ Tom on Sunday after the accident. It was in Columbus, SC and there is NOTHING online. I have been looking too. Tom told me that a car in the next lane was coming over and Jaime moved over to prevent getting hit. She went into the grass median where they fishtailed and flipped. Jaime was ejected from the car and died in life flight. Tom said it looked like she landed on her head. Visitation Friday 2-4, 7-9 at COPELAND'S FUNERAL HOME, 867 Fifth Ave. where service will be held on Saturday at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations are being arranged to the Sister of St. Louis in Ghana.

Need advice after car wreck!?

Juan Valde

It is about 2am and I am falling asleep. Unfortuantly I have to deliver papers by 6am. Hoping that they would already be at the pickup spot, I head out. They are not there. On my way back to the house, I fall asleep and hit a parked car. Being so late & not the best of neighborhoods I didn't want to start banging on doors. I leave my car where it is and start walking to a pay phone. As I am walking through yards to shorten the distance, I pass out. 3 hours later I wake to find that my car and the other wrecked vehicle have been towed. I decide to call it a night and head home. Next day I wake up and go to the scene of the accident. I leave all of my insurance info and my phone # with the owners of the car. I then go to city hall to give the police a copy of what I gave the other car owners. 2 different times I was told that they didn't need it. Last night my neigbor tells me that the police came by my house and were banging on the door & shining lights in the windows. What should I do?

Answer
You are already guilty of leaving the scene of an accident. You should have called the police right then and there to make sure they had the proper information for you to exchange with the owner of the car. You didn't. They will probably keep your car impounded until you go to the police station and turn yourself in. Once they verify your information, they will more than likely give you a traffic ticket and a court date to appear.

buyin a car?

EDDIE V

buying a car and i need to know what are the procedures to buying a car owner to owner?

Welcome Car Finance UK?

Gordie

has anyone had any dealings with Welcome Car Finance?

im meant to go next Friday with my documents and they say leave with a car, but im hoping someone can lend me some info about thier experiences.

how much deposit they want, and what they monthly payments are?? i know this will vary depending on what car but hoping to just get an idea

Thanks

Answer
Here are reviews from people who have used welcome car finance..

http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews107856.html

With a typical finance APR of 19.9% this is a very expensive way to buy a car, but if your credit score/history isn't that good then this is the only way you go. Their personal loans are even more expensive with a typical APR of over 60%!
