What do people who buy junk cars do with them?

car newspaper ads on ... 2013 And 2014 Release and Price on prices-cars.com | prices-cars.com
car newspaper ads image

Nightflyer

The newspaper ad says $180 and up for junk or unwanted vehicles. Do they just take out the good parts and smash the rest? Thanks

Answer
Some are fixed up and resold, some are scrapped for the metal weight, some are stripped of usable parts and then scrapped. It all depends on the vehicle and the buyer. I have bought cars strictly for parts and then either sold or gave away the rest after I took what I needed.

Why do dealerships always have misprinted ads?

Arlen

I know cars pretty well and I know what all the models are supposed to look like. Why do the newspaper ads almost always have obvious errors, where the model name does not match the picture, such as a ford focus title and price with a ford fusion picture? Do they do that on purpose so they can weasel out of the deal? I know misprints happen, particularly in newspapers, but this is such a regular occurrence that there seems to be something intentional going on.

Answer
They do it on purpose to get you into the dealership and then try to pull the old 'bait and switch' on you.

How could I use a vacuum cleaner motor as a remote control car's motor?

Just that

Would i have to add some resistors or something? Im designing an rc car, and need to know if i can use an old vacuum cleaners motor. Simply because there bloody quick. I don't know how i would be able to control the speed of the motor. Please help, any additional info fill me in.

Thanks

Please don't say its impossible, anything is possible.

Answer
Wow, nah. You can do it. Your going to need a variable power distributed supply for the motor to contol it speed. And the cara gonna be huge. Say 1/4 scale I'm guess. But some transition gears and a strudy differential and you'll be flying down the road mate! A heavy duty servo or two. Some disk brakes for sure to stop the beast. But absolutely can make it work I've seen em built and seen em run wicked fast things. Email me I can send you some specs and video clips of one. Www.racewayhobbiez.com

I need a source to learn about Syria civil war?

I consider myself a very knowledgable guy and I try to stay current with world news, but I have had an extremely hard time when it comes to what's going on in Syria. I have read some conflicting articles and I realize every news source has its bias. I just want to know what's really going on. Thank you in advance.

Answer
The current conflict in Syria has nothing to do with "freedom" or "democracy", it is driven entirely by the geopolitical aspirations of the United States and its middle eastern allies.

The US has wanted to overthrow the Syrian government for a long time, and not because of any "humanitarian" concerns, but because of Syria's opposition to American regional interests, its long-time hostility towards the apartheid state of Israel, its support for resistance movements in Palestine and Lebanon, and its alliance with major geopolitical enemies of the US, such as Russia, China and Iran. By destroying Syria the US hopes to break apart the Iran-Syria-Hezbollah axis and get closer to establishing total hegemony in the middle east.

America's regional allies, namely the totalitarian Sunni monarchies of Saudi Arabia and Qatar, are diametrically opposed to the Shia-led governments of Syria and Iran, and want to destroy them not only for political reasons but also to spread their own influence by exporting their brand of extreme religious ideology (wahhabism).

The US government has admittedly made plans decades ago to carry out regime change in Syria. In fact, it is documented that the US government has given money and weapons to sectarian anti-government terrorists in Syria and provided training to so-called Syrian "activists" BEFORE the start of the current "uprising". (http://bit.ly/KmkQF3)

The so-called "Free Syrian Army" are nothing but a collection of Sunni extremists and Islamist militants from all over the middle east hired to fight as a proxy army on behalf of the United States, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and to accomplish their geopolitical goals. The majority of the FSA are not Syrians; most come from Afghanistan, Chechnya, Libya, the Gulf states, Iraq, Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon and elsewhere. Many of them are jihadists and terrorists directly linked to Al-Qaeda and other salafi terror groups, including Jabhat al-Nusra (Al-Qaeda in Syria) and the Muslim Brotherhood.

These terrorist groups, which later named themselves the "Free Syrian Army", are the ones who have been causing the violence in Syria since the very beginning. In April 2011 there was a peaceful protest movement calling for reforms within the government, but it was quickly hijacked by the FSA and turned into a violent insurgency. The FSA do not care about freedom, democracy or reforms. It was their goal from the beginning to hijack the legitimate Syrian opposition and start a civil war. They are terrorists motivated solely by sectarian hatred, and they have openly expressed their desire to establish an Islamic state in Syria.

For the past year and a half Saudi Arabia and Qatar have been supplying them with money, weapons and fighters. In April 2011 journalists witnessed armed militants crossing into Syria across the Lebanese border. Every day Syrian security forces find foreign passports on dead FSA fighters as well as shipments of foreign equipment and advanced weaponry in FSA stockpiles.

In the first weeks of the "peaceful uprising", terrorists began murdering dozens of Syrian soldiers, mercenary snipers shot civilians and security forces in cities, armed men provoked violence by shooting at policemen from inside crowds, and Saudi-funded extremist preachers in Mosques incited uneducated Sunni youths to riot, burn police stations and commit sectarian violence, forcing the hand of the Syrian government into what the western media has called a "crackdown".

Since then the "Free Syrian Army" terrorists have killed at least 20,000 people, and have kidnapped and tortured thousands more. They are blowing up government buildings, sabotaging infrastructure, setting off car bombs in residential areas, destroying and terrorizing neighborhoods, forcing tens of thousands of people to flee their homes, destroying mosques and churches, committing massacres, murdering anyone whom they suspect of supporting the government, or anyone who has different beliefs than them (Alawites, Christians, Shiites and moderate Sunnis).

Most "news reports" about Syria shown on CNN/BBC/Al-Jazeera are stories and rumors that are taken directly from anonymous "activists" and Syrian opposition sources without any verification whatsoever. Most of the reports turn out to be completely false, and many times the sources aren't even Syrian.

For example, the "Syrian Observatory for Human Rights" quoted often in the media actually consists of one man in a London apartment

Is there any suggestions on what I can do while my husband is deployed to keep me from being sad all the time?

MrsPrice

My hubby is deployed to Qatar for a year he leaves Nov. 06 and won't be back until Nov. 07. I am a grad student and i have an internship but surprisingly I still have a lot of free time after I study and do my hw. I go and workout but I still have plenty of free time. I'm sad and depressed and he hasn't even left the country yet. I just don't know what to do. I don't have any friends here or anyone who understands and I am away from my family I'm all alone in grad school.
I'm also not anywhere near his base he is in the Reserves and the base he deployed from is in Utah. I'm in NY. I think the nearest base here is Fort Drum and that still is hours away.

Answer
An amazing number of people either answered this before you added that you were away from a post, or didn't read the whole thing.

It IS possible to get in contact with your husband's FRG via email. They can put you on a mailing list and will send you official updates on unit activities, etc. as they become available. They are the best source of news regarding your husband's deployment-if they do their jobs right. Have your husband check to find out who your FRG leader is. They may also be able to set you up with other wives in the unit for you to contact with personal deployment related issues. Even if it's not called the FRG in the reserves, they should have some form of family readiness group that can provide this sort of information.

The important thing is to stay busy and avoid news coverage. The news rarely reports what really happened, exaggerates what it wants, and downplays or excludes vital information that make the story true.

Easy for me to say? Yes and no. My husband is a month into deployment #2 in 3.5 years, and I don't have anything better to do like grad school or an internship.

You need to stay strong for his sake as much as your own sanity. Enjoy the time you have before he leaves. It's natural to worry, but he needs to see you be strong. If he leaves thinking you can't handle it on your end, it's going to distract him from his mission while he's deployed. I'm not trying to make you feel worse, but that's how it is.

Stay positive. Tell yourself you WILL get through it and he WILL come home. No, it's not always easy. But he has a job to concentrate on, and you have a life to lead regardless of his location. Surround yourself with positive people. Don't dwell on negative things. Don't hang around the phone either. Get out of the house. Got a cell phone? If not, get one. I even have a convenience pkg on my phone line for call forwarding when I'm away from the house so I don't miss a call. But the key point is to get out of the house.

It's true, you can't send too many emails or letters. I think they prefer letters because they can carry them along with them and look at them without having to stand in line at the phone center. Getting mail is like Christmas to deployed soldiers. But keep the sob stories to a minimum. He needs to know exactly 3 things: that you love him, that you're waiting for him, and that you're handling things just fine. It's okay to tell him if you have one particularly bad day, but don't do it in every letter/message. Always focus on the good, whether you're talking to him, your mother, or yourself. (The car died on the way to work but I won 20 bucks on a scratch-off lotto ticket while waiting for the tow.) Smile, being sad won't keep him home.

***Bottom line: You're strong, you're independent, you can handle this.***

And have a good long distance plan for calling home. :)

Answer
Consider visiting New Orleans!

NOLA is one of the world's special places with an ambience unique in North America, and remains so even after Katrina devastated it in 2005.

Katrina flooded about 80% of New Orleans with salt water, and the water stayed for almost a month. Much of the city is still struggling to recover and all you have to do to see devastation is drive around. It will take years for NOLA to fully recover from Katrina.

However, the parts of the city that tourists usually visit were not flooded. It's not a coincidence - the French Quarter and other old parts of the city were built on relatively high ground and only suffered wind damage from Katrina. Almost all of the damage has been repaired and you have to look closely in the FQ and city center to see that Katrina happened at all. You should visit and see for yourself.

Note that the City of New Orleans is only part of the greater New Orleans area. The GNO area had a population of about 1,400,000 before Katrina and is estimated at about 1,250,000 now (July, 2008). The absent 150,000 are mostly from the City of New Orleans and the parishes of Plaquemines and Saint Bernard, which were the worst-flooded parts of the metro area. Jefferson Parish - just to the west of the City - suffered relatively minor flooding and has fully recovered.

You can drink the water, the electricity & phones work, and services like the post office, hospitals, schools, and police/fire/EMS are operating. Restaurants, stores and shopping centers are open.

Municipal services like street cleaning & trash collection collapsed after Katrina. Those services were fully restored in late 2006 and it is no longer an issue.

I recommend staying in the French Quarter (Vieux Carre") if you can. There is a very wide range of selections available, from moderate guest houses to very exclusive "boutique" hotels. Search Yahoo Travel and Travelocity for ideas and also check the hotel websites. Go to www.frenchquarterhotels.com for some non-chain hotels. A great hotel thatâs downtown but outside the FQ is the Le Pavillion: http://www.lepavillon.com/

A very inexpensive option for students and international visitors is the India House hostel: http://www.indiahousehostel.com/

You don't need a car to get around in the French Quarter, Central Business District, or Warehouse District. Also, the parking regulations are Byzantine and there are lots of Parking Control Agents. If you drive or rent a car, leave it in a lot or garage unless you are traveling away from downtown.

The regional transit authority (www.norta.com) sells 1 and 3 day passes that offer unlimited use of buses and streetcars for the day(s) you select. There are also lots of taxicabs.

Louisiana is the only US state that offers tax-free shopping for international visitors:
http://www.louisianatravel.com/shop/tax_free/

Regarding crime, use the same common sense necessary in every major city in the world and there is little chance you will be a victim of anything except a need to visit the gym.

New Orleans has mild weather from late October to early May and the city stays green all year most years (rarely freezes and almost never snows). We pay for the mild winters with hot, humid summers â particularly in July & August. Just wear light, cotton clothes and take it easy during the afternoon. The good news for summertime visitors is that hotel rates are lower.

Things to do in New Orleans:

Mardi Gras and the Jazz Festival are world famous events, but New Orleans hosts many festivals and celebrations throughout the year: http://www.nola.com/festivals/

There are many sightseeing opportunities in the greater New Orleans area, including carriage rides/tours, plantation tours, swamp tours, ghost tours, and even Katrina disaster tours. The steamboat Natchez also does a harbor tour. There are numerous tour companies and your hotel can help with the arrangements. Try to avoid scheduling an outdoor tour until you know the weather forecast for the day in question.

The Saint Charles Streetcar is the oldest continuously operating street railway in the world and is a "tourist attraction" in its own right. It is part of the public transit system, as are the Canal Street and Riverfront streetcar lines: http://www.norta.com/

There is always music, but the bands change: Go to www.bestofneworleans.com and click on Music then Listings or to www.offbeat.com and click on Listings, then Music.

Note that music clubs often advertise "No Cover", meaning there is no charge for entering. However, clubs with "No Cover" often require that customers buy a beverage each for every "set " of music (which can be every 20 minutes) so KNOW THE PRICE before you sit down. Clubs do that because some people will sit in the club all evening drinking nothing (clubs only make money from the drinks they sell - not from the music). It is also a good idea to pay for each round of drinks (in clubs on Bourbon Street) as it is delivered so there can't be any confusion at the end of the evening.

An incomplete guide to bars & clubs: http://blog.nola.com/brettanderson/2008/07/85_great_places_to_drink.html

About certain alcoholic beverages: Realize that some famous drinks are VERY potent compared with regular cocktails that have only 1 to 1 ½ ounces of alcohol. For example, a Hurricane is basically 3 or 4 ounces of rum in something like red Kool-Aid, and a Hand Grenade has at least 4 ½ ounces of Everclear + rum + vodka mixed with melon liquor. They donât necessarily taste like an alcoholic beverage and it is easy to over-indulge.

Wander around the French Quarter, enjoy the architecture, watch the street entertainers (do tip), and visit some of the historic buildings that have been turned into museums (go to www.frenchquarter.com and click on Historic Attractions).

Assuming the weather is good, you can collect a sandwich lunch and eat in the riverfront park (watch the shipping) or in Jackson Square (a very nice park).

The Riverwalk shopping center has an air-conditioned food court with dining overlooking the river (www.riverwalkmarketplace.com). The Canal Place shopping center is in the French Quarter and has a cinema and higher-end shopping (Saks 5th Avenue, Brooks Brothers, etc.)

The lobby for the Westin Canal Place Hotel is on the 11th floor and overlooks the French Quarter. It is a great place for an afternoon drink/snack:(www.westin.com).

Cafe du Monde is in the French Quarter and you shouldn't miss having cafe au lait & beignets (www.cafedumonde.com). Another great coffee shop is the Croissant d'Or (at 615 Ursulines Street), which is open from 7:00am to 2:00pm and has food in addition to pastry.

The Palm Court restaurant is very nice, has moderate prices, and traditional live jazz starting at 8:00pm: 1204 Decatur Street, tel 504-525-0200 (reservations are important and they are not open every day). The Palm Court is closed from about July 25th to about September 25th each year.

Maximo's Italian Grill has great food and atmosphere: 1117 Decatur Street in the French Quarter, (504) 586-8883.

All of the famous restaurants (Antoine's, Arnaud's, Brennan's, Commander's Palace, etc.) have reopened. The Pelican Club (on Exchange Alley in the FQ) is not as well known but is the same type experience. Reservations are a good idea, and probably essential on weekends. Tujaques Restaurant (823 Decatur Street) is very traditional and has moderate prices: http://www.tujaguesrestaurant.com/

Cafe Degas is a very French restaurant near City Park at 3127 Esplanade - which is not within walking distance of downtown (5 to 10 minutes by taxi). They are closed on Mondays & Tuesdays (504-945-5635).

The Napoleon House restaurant is at 500 Chartres Street in the FQ, and has a menu of great local dishes: http://www.napoleonhouse.com/

Preservation Hall has traditional live Jazz, and doesnât serve alcohol so all ages are welcome: http://www.preservationhall.com/

New Orleans has ballet, opera, a symphony orchestra, and theatre:

http://www.nobadance.com/
http://www.neworleansopera.org/
http://www.lpomusic.com/
http://www.lepetittheatre.com/

There is a free ferry across the Mississippi at the "foot" of Canal Street. It is a short trip but like a harbor cruise w/o a guide: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/canal_street_ferry

The Aquarium, Audubon Zoo, and the new Insectarium are world-class attractions (www.auduboninstitute.org) and you should see them if you can. The Zoo is several miles from downtown. You can drive to the Zoo (which has free parking) or take public transit from the French Quarter.

The Louisiana State Museum is in the French Quarter: http://lsm.crt.state.la.us/ New Orleans is also home to a number of other museums, such as the National World War II Museum (www.ddaymuseum.org) and the New Orleans Museum of Art (www.noma.org). Both can be reached by public transit: The WWII museum is in the central business district but a long walk from the French Quarter. NOMA is not within walking distance of downtown but has free parking. Go to http://www.neworleansmuseums.com/ for info on more museums.

Harrahâs Casino is in the Central Business District: http://www.harrahs.com/casinos/harrahs-new-orleans/hotel-casino/property-home.shtml (age 21 required for entry)

New Orleans City Park has a variety of attractions, including an amusement park with rides and attractions for children + free parking. City Park also presents "Celebration in the Oaks" from late November to early January: (www.neworleanscitypark.com).

Check www.frenchquarter.com for ideas about other things to do.

Hope you have a great time, wherever you go!

Has anyone ever been hit by lightning AND won the lottery?

i

Every time I tell someone that I've been struck, they get excited and say "you should play the lottery." It seems stupid to me. I'm not a gambler anyway, but what are the chances that a single person would be struck by lightning AND win the lottery?

Answer
India, you won't believe this...

From Yahoo! news:

KANSAS CITY, Kansas (Reuters) - A Kansas man was struck by lightning hours after buying three Mega Millions lottery tickets on Thursday, proving in real life the old saying that a gambler is more likely to be struck down from the sky than win the jackpot.

Bill Isles, 48, bought three tickets in the record $656 million lottery Thursday at a Wichita, Kansas grocery store. On the way to his car, Isles said he commented to a friend: "I've got a better chance of getting struck by lightning" than winning the lottery.

Later at about 9:30 p.m., Isles was standing in the back yard of his Wichita duplex, when he saw a flash and heard a boom -- lightning.

"It threw me to the ground quivering," Isles said in a telephone interview on Saturday. "It kind of scrambled my brain and gave me an irregular heartbeat."

How to describe a car with a diffrent Year of motor?

Russian_ST

Ok i have a 97 honda prelude. The thing is that i bought just the the car with nothing in there (no engine, tranny, interior) and they titel states thats its a 97. I put in everything from a 2001 honda prelude in it (tranny, engine, interior) so the body has like 115k miles but the engine has 49k

i am now planning on selling the car because i joined the military and leaving next month for training. how would i describe this in the newspaper ad. could i say thats its a 2001?

Answer
I have a 1960 bus with a 1976 engine in it and that's just how I describe it. I would suggest you advertise the car as a 1997 Prelude with a 2001 engine, tranny, and interior.

P.S. Good luck in the military and thanks for volunteering to protect all of our freedom.

How do I get a car registered which has no papers/plates and has sat for years?

John H

I responded to a newspaper ad recently and bought a 1971 vw beetle. The car had no plates and no paperwork that I could find. There were several telltale signs that the car had sat a number of years, but I understood it to be a project. The seller said he had originally bought it at auction with the intent of using its (good) engine for a sand rail dune buggy, but that like many other good plans requires time. Once paid for, I was provided no bill of sale which I feel I was owed. It was as if the seller felt that since he had let the car go very cheap, that he owed no person any more, and if he did, he should've either charged more or wrecked it instead. Like he could have gone to the trouble but would be put out for something extraneous. The seller has a shop in an easy to find location, so it is not as if I cannot find him, and he doesn't appear to be trying to hide, hes just a strangely irritable and crotchety person.

Answer
take the VIN number and see if you can file for either a lost title or a salvage title. Good luck, VW bugs, the old ones, are my dream car, I will have one some day.

How are Japanese car companies doing through all this?

mirzai_m

All the focus in the news is how the big 3 U.S. auto makers are screwed. How are Japanese car companies doing right now? We own Hondas because American cars flat-out suck.

Answer
I'm actually a Canadian living in Philippines temporarily and I see some effects of the economy also here but not as bad as in the US. Of course the Japanese also sell in the US so they are hurting too but since the Asian market is still some what stable they should pull through this and myself I won't be too surprised if some of the larger Japanese company's take over and buy out the US auto makers. Like something like Toyota buying out GM, I could see that happening if things got bad enough and it probably would be for the better too! The simple fact of the matter is the demand for cars will never go away since old cars wear out so eventually they need to be replaced no matter what.

To the Gripper: I have had lots of experience with domestic cars having owned nearly 30 of them and also working in a Ford dealer and in a transmission shop and in several autobody shops. The fact is 90% of American cars are complete junk! They are getting worse all the time, why do people always trust new car reviews? Time is what proves the quality of a vehicle. Ford's are actually the worst, their diesel trucks are beyond junk having junk engines and transmissions and they have a class action suit against them as of current for the defective transmissions they put in every Taurus and Sable ever built. I owned a 99 Taurus with low miles and it literally fell apart and cost me a small fortune. Did you think the Aerostar's or Windstars were good? They were both the biggest lemons to ever hit the road too! Then there is GM who has put a weak tranny in their half ton trucks for over 20 years now and over rated it's towing capacity. And then Dodge with their Caravan's with their junk transmissions. Again GM with their failing head gaskets on pretty much every model of vehicle they made since 1995, Sunfire, Venture, Grand AM to name a few....... Do a little research before you speck and no I'm not saying that all foreign cars are perfect either but they are a step up from an American car for the most part.

What was the lesson learned from Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) and Typhoon Pepeng (Parma) in the Philippines?

liza

If you are outside the Philippines, what was your impression about the typhoon and why it was happened. Is there any fault from the citizens of the Philippines or from the government itself? Is there any purpose why is it happened?

Answer
Be prepared. Every person, every house, every community should have a disaster and typhoon plan. At the start of each Typhoon season you should stock up on some basics such as candles, canned food, store rice in waterproof jars, have extra water bottles handy, etc. Before a major storm you should stock up about a weeks worth of food and drinking water. You should have an evacuation plan if it looks like the flooding will be really bad, you should know where you are going, and how you are going to get there.

Communities should also be prepared, and have evacuation shelters available before the storm, and take precautions such as clearing out abandoned cars and other debris from the river and drainage canals, and to lower the water levels in water retention ponds and lakes as early as possible before the storm hits. Enforcing new building codes such as requiring the living areas of all new construction above the 100 year flood level will discourage people from constructing sub-standard housing in flood prone areas.

These types of disasters happen all the time, all across the world. Communities become very relaxed after a long period with no major storms, and then after a disaster hits they scramble to take action. A similar story happened in Florida USA, after decades with no bad storms, Hurricane Andrew hit Miami in 1990, causing a lot of damage and deaths. Florida was so scared they made new building codes and emphasised flood control and disaster planning, so when the many bad hurricanes hit Florida in 2004 and 2005, there was not that much damage or loss of life. Lousiana had not seen a major Hurricane for a long time, so when Hurricane Katrina passed over Florida and hit New Orleans it caused major damage and loss of life. Now New Orleans is re-building with an emphasis on disaster and flood control.

Philippines gets hit by about 20 major Typhoons every year, it is known as 'Typhoon Alley'. Maybe disaster preparedness and Red Cross Volunteer work would be a good national hobby or focus of the schools and news media?

ok my car is constantly over heating ,, i have asked a few people for help on it ,, even a mechanic ,, they checked hoses ,, thermostat ( which i got them to take out now ) ,circulation , and the anti freeze ( bright green ) , i noticed when i do stop my car and check there is maybe a teaspoon of anti freeeze on the engine ,, nothing more and cant see where its comin from ,no other leaks or breaks in hoses , no antifreeze in the oil ,, nothing ,, what could be the problem ??

Answer
I am going to assume you have the 2.2 2.5 engine family inline 4 cyl. I have one of these for sale right now 1990 Acclaim turbo 2.5. These engines are known for head gasket failures. I also had to change the fan switch to a manual one I control in the car. For reference Carquest sold me a gasket for 40 bucks and it was a days work changing the gasket. Check your metal coolant hoses for leaking also. Another little check is loosen the rad cap so it makes no pressure in the system and see if the over heat goes away then you have more proof the head gasket took early retirement. These motors are iron block aluminum head configuration overheating is very very bad news for aluminum parts. Warpage must be checked while the head is off.

So... I was putting oil in my car today after work, and I apperently forgot to put the oil cap back on, because when I got hoome my car was smoking, there was oil spewed everywhere and a missing oil cap. My question is...

the only thing I could find that kind of fit over it was an aluminum cookie cutter. is that safe to drive until I get a repacement, or will something bad happen if I try it?

can I continue dirving WITHOUT an oil cap or anything over that, or is that unsafe?

Also, my car is pretty old, its a geo prizm. Do they still make oil caps to fit it? if so where can I get opne?

Answer
I got good news and bad news for you,
Good news is your engine is not going to get ruined. The reason your car is smoking like that is because oil is shooting and sputtering out of the valve cover, and its going all over the hot engine and smoking.
Bad news is your loosing vaccume pressure in your valve cover. So you want to get it replaced soon as you get a chance.
As long as nothing falls in there you will be ok. So if you can temporarily tape it off or cover it for now that would be a good idea.
And it dont matter how old your car is you shoulnt have trouble finding a replacement oil cap.
Any auto store should either have one in stock or be able to get you one such as- autozone, checker auto, napa, carquest, or even somewhere on the internet like ebay.

Is it possible to convert a gas car to electric?

revolution

Is it possible to convert a 1960s-1970s Combi van (more commonly known as a hippie van) to an electric car? and how much would it cost? Please only post if you know the answer. 10 points best answer. thanks.

Answer
Absolutly, I've converted several VW vans, bugs, etc.

My last EV conversion ran me about $1400. Everything is available online. I have a how to do it yourself guide available at www agua-luna com that will walk you step by step through the process. If you have ANY questions feel free to contact me through the site. Hereâs a list of what you'd need...

Advanced DC Motor
The motor is an 8" Advanced DC series-wound motor. It weighs 107 pounds and is rated at 68 peak horsepower. These motors are available in several sizes.

Adaptor plate
The adaptor plate mates the motor to the transmission. It is constructed of 1/2 inch aluminum and is pre-drilled with bolt hole patterns for both the motor and transmission. An aluminum spacer is also used for proper spacing between the shafts of the transmission and motor. Adaptor plates are available for many cars.

DC Motor Controller
The controller regulates current going to the motor. It is a solid-state device that uses a pulse width modulator (PWM) that sends short bursts of current to the motor at a rate of 15 kHz. Controllers are available from both Curtis and DCP.

Potbox (Potentiometer)
The potbox is a 5K ohm throttle between the controller and the accelerator, similar to the way a sewing machine pedal works. The potbox's lever arm is attached to the existing accelerator cable.

Main Contactor
An electric relay that serves the same purpose as the ignition switch in a gas car. When the key is turned to the start position, the contactor closes the circuit to allow current to flow to the controller.

Circuit Breaker
A safety device that shuts down power for servicing or during an emergency. The circuit breaker is installed under the hood and can be switched both off and on from the drivers seat with an extension or cable.

Main Fuse
The main fuse protect the system from high voltage spikes. A fuse should be installed at each battery box or group of batteries.

Shunt
A shunt is placed in series within the wiring as a means to connect meters. Shunts are available in different sizes for both high and low power configurations.

Charger interlock
A relay that keeps the circuit open so nobody will inadvertantly drive off with the charge cord plugged into the car.

DC/DC Converter
The DC/DC converter is similar in function to a gas car's alternator. It charges the 12 volt accessory battery by chopping voltage from the main battery pack down to 13.5 volts.

I currently own 2 converted h2 vehicles which run on 100% hydrogen and 1 EV (electric vehicle), not to mention our home is completely off the grid, using alternative energy (solar, wind, etc)

If you interested I offer several DIY alternative guides to walk you step by step threw EV conversion process at agua-luna com or

www agua-luna com
Hope this helped, feel free to contact me personally if you have any questions if youâd like assistance in making your first self sufficient steps, Iâm willing to walk you step by step threw the process. Iâve written several how-to DIY guides available at www agua-luna com on the subject. I also offer online and on-site workshops, seminars and internships to help others help the environment.

reliance MLM is it true?

car news kerala image

SATHISH B

is it true, which is the product will be launching for this MLM

Answer
Some Report appeared at local news paper of Kerala that Reliance group ( Anil Ambani ) is now capturing MLM (multi-level marketing) market in India. According to that news many people will get quick money from Reliance MLM who will join at initial period. Reliance MLM was scheduled to launch on 11th February 2008, but due to some reason it will launch now at any time.

The Reliance MLM program- According to news paper in this mlm program you have to make 25 people as a customer of Relince mobile and Life insurance. If you will do this you will get a Maruti car. So how Reliance will manage to give you such a big prize?

This may be possible, because in this type of mlm program many people tries to sell product but only few people are able to make a large referral and so only few people are able to get prize and in this way company makes lot of profit without doing anything.

The fact is Reliance have not officially said any thing about it and seems to be a scam. Before involving in any such business try to keep patience and do further only if you will get official information.

The site www.reliancemlm.com is also not registered by relience group, so dont belive this link.

What is the process on filing an insurance claim after a car accident?

car accident info on ... Fairly Used Car Accident Free Contact Info Pescltd Com (United States
car accident info image

Janean G

My fiance was in a car accident where she wasnt at fault. Our car was damaged and she was injured. The other driver gave us his insurance info. How do we collect?

Answer
You just phone your insurer and they will either ask you a series of questions over the phone, or post you a form to fill in. When they have all the information, they will send it to the other person's insurer and tell them that they want to maka a claim. The insurers will then argue the liability and if your fiance is found to be not at fault, the other person's insurer will pay out.

While your car is off the road, you may be able to claim for a courtesy car or claim for travel expenses so keep all receipts etc.

EDIT: Just to respond to the other person's answer, you cannot approach the other person's insurer directly as they will not be able to discuss the other person's policy with you due to the Data Protection Act precluding them from doing so. The correct process is to approach your own insurer who will in turn approach the other person's insurer. This will not affect your policy/premium/excess as you are still claiming from the other person's policy, and not your own policy.

Where can i find info on a specific car accident?

Sarah

I want to figure out more about a car accident that happened a few years ago. I know some details of the accident, but i want to know if theres somewhere online that i can type in the info i know, and have it help me find more info on it. thanks.

Answer
Claim files are not public record. You won't be able to get that information. If you were one of the parties involved in the accident, then you can contact the adjuster that handled your claim. The adjuster will be limited in what they tell you.

If you know the date, location and drivers you can order a copy of the police report.
If it was a bad accident, there my have been a story in the paper about it.

I already have insurance with them. I'm really far behind on payments so I don't think dividing the policy would work. Plus there are two cars on my policy and I want to know the car insurance for a specific one. I guess I'll just call tomorrow.

Answer
The same way as you would with any insurance company. Call them and ask for a quote or do it online. You need basic info about your car to give them.

What exactly is a Tax Disk holder in the UK?

car registration info uk on ... By Hotaru Computer Training Uk Release and Price on prices-cars.com
car registration info uk image
Q. In the US we just have stickers for Registration and Emissions.
Please explain how these Tax Disk holders work and how they display the info

Answer
Vehicle Excise Duty (VED) is a British excise duty, which has to be paid to acquire a vehicle licence for most types of motor vehicle. A vehicle licence is usually required if a vehicle is to be legally used on the public roads. The tax, rarely if ever known by its formal title, and most commonly known as the road tax, is not hypothecated for spending on roads, the entire proceeds contributing to central government revenues. Before 1936, and still used to this day in informal everyday use, the licence was known as the road fund licence, and the proceeds went into the Government's road fund, and used entirely for road expenditure. The tax is collected and enforced by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA). Proof of payment comes in the form of a paper disk that must be clearly displayed on the vehicle, and gives rise to the third interchangeable common term used for the tax, tax disc.

Any vehicle used or kept on the public road is liable. Vehicle owners paying the tax are issued with a non-transferable vehicle licence ("tax disc") to be displayed on the vehicle. Since 1998, owners of registered vehicles not using the public roads have been required to submit an annual Statutory Off-Road Notification (SORN).[1] Failure to submit a SORN is punishable in the same manner as failure to pay duty and display a tax disc when using the vehicle on public roads.

In March 2005, graduated vehicle excise duty (GRAD VED) was introduced as an incentive to purchase vehicles with low emission levels:

* Cars registered before March 1, 2001 are charged according to engine capacity. In the 2008 â 2009 tax year this was £120 for cars with a capacity under 1550cc and £185 for those of 1550cc and above.
* Cars registered on or after March 1, 2001 are charged according to their level of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission. For the tax year 2008 â 2009 this was up to £400, with the least polluting vehicles paying no excise duty at all.
* The highest rates of Vehicle Excise Duty ("Band G") only apply to vehicles manufactured after 23 March 2006 - the maximum VED for vehicles manufactured before that date is £205 for petrol and diesel powered vehicles.

Rates for all other vehicles vary from £15 for motorcycles with an engine capacity under 150cc, up to a maximum of £1,850 for the largest heavy goods vehicles (HGVs). (Special rates apply to HGVs not used commercially.) A few special-purpose vehicles such as ambulances are exempt.

In tax year 2002 â 2003, it is estimated that evasion of the tax equated to a loss to the Exchequer of £206 million. In an attempt to reduce this, from 2004 an automatic £80 penalty (halved if paid within 28 days) is issued by the DVLA computer for failure to pay the tax within one month of the expiry of the previous tax disc. A maximum fine of £1,000 applies for failure to pay the tax, though in practice fines are normally much lower.

The police have also been granted devolved powers to tow or clamp any vehicles a police officer or PCSO sees, that is unlicensed on a public road.

Also note that vehicles constructed before 1 January 1973 are eligible for a free vehicle licence under the "Historic Vehicles" legislation. This is due to the age of the vehicle and a presumption of limited mileage. Initially this was a rolling exemption applied to any vehicles over 25 years old, however the cutoff date was frozen in 1997. The change to "pre-1973" was unpopular in the classic motoring press, and a number of classic car clubs are campaigning for a change back to the previous system.

Steps to registering a car back to its old UK plates.?

Matt

Does anyone know what the steps are to get a British car that is on foreign plates back to it's old UK plates?

Thanks in advance
If I can't get my old plates back, would it go on a Q plate?

Answer
Go to the dvla website for the info - as said
I don't think you will be given the original registration, it may have been reallocated, you could ask but you would have to pay extra, I think its nearer £100 to re-register .

How to find out if my car has Bluetooth in it?

Alexander

I just bought a 2010 toyota camry. I do not no if theres bluetooth in it. In the car there is a mircophone for it. Also on the radio there is the text option. How can i find out if the car is equipped with bluetooth. On the sticker it does not say it.

Answer
If the sticker does not mention it you do not have bluetooth, a $400 option in Toyotas. There would be controls for it on the spokes of the steering wheel.

The text option allows your CD player to show text from CD's that have text.

The owners manuals have lots of info. There's the quickie manual, and there's the thincker one that tells the whole story in detail. After the excitement subsides, sit with the handbook.

They are supposed to tell you all this stuff while you're on the lot looking at the car, but they may think you know all of it when you don't ask for the info.

They probably put the sticker in your glove compartment. Look it over.

Did they sell you the "perma plate"? If you refuse it, they might knock the price in half.

Don't have too much excitement about the MPG meter. It's nice, but look at the road.

We, just replaced a 23 year old Corolla with 214,000 miles on it (still a daily driver), with a 2010 Corolla. It's as roomy as my old 1986 Camry was.

Congratulations.

Can an Illinois resident temporarily in California buy a car in CA and register it in Illinois?

rezaf_2000

I'm a resident of Illinois temporarily in California for 3 months. Can I buy a car here, but register it in Illinois? I want to take the car back to my home after 3 months.

If possible, how should I do it? Should I mail the forms or something similar?

Answer
That only works for military. If you live in/work in the state 30 days, you have to register in CA or risk a ticket. When buying in CA, the plates stay with the car. You might only get caught if you end up in one of their safety inspection road stops or get caught speeding. Call DMV or Hwy Patrol for more detailed info.

I know someone that just got his registration for the first time and now he has to renew it. It's been less than a year (about 6 months) since he got his registration, how come it expired so quickly? Are all car registrations like that?
The state is California.
Registered in Feb and expires in August.
None of the above months is the birth month.

Answer
In CA you don't turn in your old plate when you sell a vehicle. Sounds like he bought a car and the registration was still valid until August. From then on, it will be once yearly, but the first one can be less than a year.

See "What to do when purchasing a car from a private party?" at http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/vr_info.htm for more on the subject.

What are good questions to ask when buying a used car not from a dealer?

Jorge V

I dont know much about cars and I am going to go look at a car this weekend and i want to know what i should ask before buying the car. What things should i look out for? It's not from a dealer.

Answer
Do Not Buy That Used Car If...
These are the top mistakes made by used car buyers. Don't let this happen to you!
â¢The 17 digit VIN#'s on the door, hood, engine, dashboard do not all match exactly
â¢You failed to have a mechanic check out the car on a lift
â¢You did not run the Experian AutoCheck Vehicle History Reports on the car's VIN# prior to purchasing
â¢The title still shows a lien holder with no "Lien Satisfied" stamp on it. It means they still owe the bank
â¢The AutoCheck report shows evidence of odometer rollback or title branded as junk, flooded, stolen, etc
â¢There is no VIN# on the dashboard, or it has been filed down or altered in any way
â¢The seller does not let you drive the car first
â¢The seller does not back up every verbal promise IN WRITING!
â¢The seller is NOT the owner of the car. It means they are a dealer's agent
â¢The seller has no written bill of sale identifying the car, VIN#, and stating the title has not been rebuilt, etc.
â¢The seller does not give you copies of anything you ask for
â¢It's parked along the side of the road with a For sale sign, unless you can verify they are the owner
â¢The seller has no drivers license, title, and registration for the car. Assume the car is stolen
â¢You have not verified the seller's name on their drivers license is the same person on the car title
â¢The seller refuses to let you take the car to a trusted mechanic for inspection
â¢The seller's asking price is suspiciously far below market value
â¢The seller makes you sign a power of attorney, or only wants cash
â¢The seller tells you to pay now, and he'll get you the title tomorrow, it's locked up at the bank

What is the cheapest car per-mile to operate in the long run?

joedeshon

I have a 100-mile per day commute. Car-pooling and public transportation are not an option. If my primary concern is cost-savings in the long run (over style, comfort, etc.), what is the most economical car to own for such a purpose?
The drive is almost completely interstate highway driving. 70 mph all the way.

Answer
OK, well the good news is that the drive is mainly highway miles, which is better for you car, but your still going to get a lot of miles on the odometer, which rapidly decreases your value when you sell the car. You will also have to keep it more maintained, which can be a pain.

My recommendation, get a car, about 10 years or older, that isn't worth much, but is dependable, like a Nissan. Then you'll still have some good style and luxury, but you wont have to keep it as maintained, and you'll still save on gas and definitely on problems.

I drove 400 miles each way to Reading, Pennsylvania each week for a long time, because was self employed and had a lot of work out that way. Well, I ignored the services, but it soon caught up to me as my odometer went over 100,000 miles, in about two years, from about 40,000.The car just lost all its value. I had a lease on it, and when I gave it back it was only worth 5,000, but I owed 20,000. Now keep in mind, I drove an 05 Envoy. Well, I learned not to drive a new car like that again.

How do i get rid of a leased car?

Navid G

So my gf got hosed on a lease and has been making payments on it for the past year and half, she wants to get another car. anyone know the best way on trading a leased car that has accumulated a lot of debt?

Answer
one can terminate a lease at any time.. if it is worth what she owes against it.. then she should be able to just step out of it and walk away.. depending on what type of lease it is of course.. unfortunately if she bought it on a baloon note she may have a problem.. hopefully it is a chrysler red carpet lease.. if it is a gm lease.. you had better read the small print... also if she has more miles on it than the lease allows, she is in a mess with that too.. now can she get out of the lease? yes.. can she get another car? provided she is credit worthy yes.. the best bet? go to a ford dealer.. they have some huge incentives to use that can help her get right side up.. example.. if she is 5,000 up side down.. (thats owing more than it is worth) she can buy a ford fusion.. get a two thousand dollar discount from the dealer and 1500 from the factory.. thats 35 hundred to help her cover the 5 grand.. there are lots of ford incentives and chrysler incentives.. look in the news paper for the dealer ads.. they will reveal the incentives and discounts.. look for the cars and suvs with the biggest percent off the msrp.. then see what you can use to help over come the shortage.. if she is not upside down.. then thats even better because she can really and truely take advantage of the incentives and discounts.. good luck

I don't recall ever signing something so broad before when getting a car loan (but this is the first time I have tried to refinance). I attempted to at least write a note on the document that stipulated the purpose of the POA (i.e. did not change the the rights granted but at least documented the reason for it). They rejected that and want a new one that gives them unrestricted rights.

Is that standard thing (I live in Texas)? This is a reputable company, one we have borrowed from before. Can somebody point me to some authoritative reference that describes what is standard and non-standard for this type of loan? I don't want to be paranoid but we have all heard the news reports of "reputable" companies doing unscrupulous things when borrowers were least expecting it.

Thanks in advance.

Basically, they could just sell the car out from under you without any notice, even if you're still making your payments on time? I'm not sure if it's standard, but I would not sign that...

I'd look into selling the car and buying something cheaper.
