In the Philippines I believe it was Ferdinand Marcos who declared martial law and made himself a dictator, And the first thing he did was, He gave the Philippines two weeks to turn in there guns or it was the death penalty. How many people died from not turning in there guns?

The Philippine Constitution and way of life is based on ours, as we were allies in WW2 and we occupied them into the 90s. For his first 2 terms as President, Marcos was a moderate. When his days were closing and his 2nd term was coming to an end, he set-up a car bombing, and blamed it on the communists, so he could claim "emergency powers" and remain in office. Shortly after, he declared himself dictator and made ppl register all firearms, he said tracing the serial numbers would prevent crime. Then when ppl simmered down, he knew who had what and where, so he said, "Why not just turn them all in?"

Millions of ppl perished due to hesitancy to turn in their firearms.

Fox News lover- the Philippine population, at the time of Marcos's reign, was only about 30 million. The Philippines is about the size of Japan or the state of Florida.

Honestly, my friend, you dont wanna know what happens when you kill a person accidentally. I've been through this once, though not in the Philippines.

I'll describe my experience. It was around 11am on September 14, 1996 and was driving at 100kmp on a 120kmph road. This guy appeared out of nowhere, apparently trying to run across the road. I applied brakes with all strength I had and some instinct made me pull the handbrake. Too late...I had already hit the poor guy, whose body was flung for about 20- 30 metres by the impact.

I rushed out of the car and found him lifeless, even as other motorists stopped to help. The cops and an ambulance arrived within 5 minutes from the impact and a paramedic told me the gloomy news...that the guy was dead.

The cops did a "technical arrest' which means, I had to go with them to the police station. I was given a breathalyzer test to check whether I was drunk, which I wasnt. I was made to sit in the police station, luckily not the jail, for a couple of hours and later, produced before a public prosecutor. Paid the equivalent of $500 for bail.

The cops would call me often during their investigations and there were several visits to the civil court. Finally, the verdict was to pay compensation to the victim...which was done by my car's insurers. Above that, I had to pay the equivalent of US$10,000 as immediate relief to the victim's family, whom I thankfully never met.

Money and hassles apart....killing somebody unintentionally leaves a horrible scar on the mind. I needed counselling from a shrink for nearly a year, had frequent nightmares and was unable to drive for about six months since that day. I sold that car too. The frequent questioning by cops, the thought that I killed the bread winner of a family....were TOO MUCH to live with.

I was never a reckless driver but since that experience, I am over cautious.

Isn't there something more important to report on the headlines of the days than angel locsin gaining weight or some 30 year old pinoy kissing some 17 year old conception gal in his car? Is entertainment and celebrities the focal point of the country's news????

I don't know if this is a ranting question or whether you sincerely are looking for an answer but here it goes:

Gossip/Celebrity fads is a technique used by various corporations (inc. Yahoo, Broadcasting companies, Fox etc) to maintain the desired reaction of the public, in this case, glued to TV screens and any associated programming/event. This leads to higher viewer ratings and funding, the technique works best with an unemployed, house-based, low-income demographic.

More importantly, global issues that have an indirect effect on the Philippines are shunned since it'll enable lower-income filipinos to make wiser investments. This leads to higher incomes and a growing demand for an acquired form of entertainment. Broadcasting corps then search and invest in expensive writers and producers to fill in the time slots, haggle their sponsors to invest in new/non-tested material, leading to a higher risk of financial loss.

Should I move to LA or to the Philippines?

Hello all. I quit my job 2 weeks ago and planning to move to LA. A family member living in Buena Park said I could stay with them as long as i wanted to and drive the spare car. I retired from the military and receive a pension of $2600 a month. I have no bills, no kids with an excellent credit score. I do a have a wife that is traveling with me and will get a job just to make spending money. My question is, since I hear California is so expensive, is it safe to assume that we can live a good life there based on our individual circumstances with what we have to work with? I really would only want to live within a few blocks from the beach once we move from our family member's home. I'm not worried about crime because I grew up in Philadelphia, so I am used to it. Neither one of us drink or smoke, so most of our entertainment would be eating out, hiking, walking on the beach and riding bikes. If I purchase a car, I will pay cash for it and carry liability insurance only. I am also considering the alternative which is to move to the Philippines where my wife is from. We have a house there that is paid for. It's almost like living in LA there but in whole other country. However, I definitely would not have to work there either. Later on in La, I might have to get a job, doubt it though; what do you think?

$2600 might just cover a small apartment a few blocks from the beach in the LA area, like Santa Monica, nothing fancy. Maybe, maybe it won't be enough. A 600 sq ft house a block from the beach in Venice, on a teeny lot, rents for $4000 a month to one person. You might be able to find a decent one bedroom apartment for less ($2000+), maybe about 20+ blocks from the beach in Santa Monica or in a sketchy neighborhood, or about 5+ miles from the beach in Culver City, Palms, or West LA ($1600+). You might find lower rent but you'll want to check the neighborhood and neighbors carefully, your wife may not be as comfortable as you with high crime. Even at the higher prices, you need to check out the area.

You will likely have a much better style of living in the Philippines, especially if you already have a home there. One of my son's friends has lived both places for years, likes them equally, and her family has a very nice lifestyle in an upscale LA neighborhood.

Be very careful about rental scams, we have many in LA. Things like a manager takes the application and deposit (about 2x rent) from many applicants and then disappears with the money because they really have nothing to do with the apartment or house. This goes on over and over again even though they show it on the news. If the deal seems to good to be true..... it is. No one gives anyone a deal on rent in LA. Many landlords in LA want to see income of 3 to 4 times the rent, great credit, rental and local job history. Typical for an unfurnished apartment is one months rents up front, plus an amount equal to one month's rent as a deposit, plus maybe some smaller amounts for credit check, cleaning, key fee. Your budget is very low for LA, you would live as a poor person and chances are no where near the beach, at least no where your wife would likely be comfortable with. Most landlords rent studio apartments to only one person, and as they prefer to rent one bedroom to one adult, if they rent to a couple, they often want each to be able to afford the apartment individually, in case they break up, especially if the income is low.

What are the basic driving rules in the Philippines?

I do know how to drive and own a license. But like most Filipinos, I did not learn from a driving school. The theory test was a breeze, forget the practical test. Basically the examiner just wanted to know if I knew where the ignition key is.

My questions are:

Is there a speed limit within the city? I know expressway max is 110 kph.

Is there such a thing as priority is given to the right? (ie when a car is coming from a corner on your right hand side)

I'm asking because after just getting a european license, it's like a whole new world of rules and regulations for me. And it makes a lot of sense. Whereas when I was driving in Manila, I was driving cluelessly around.

IN REALITY, there are no speed limits ( you cant overspeed anyway, because of the traffic)

There are no "right of way" - just drive defensively , just because its a hassle getting your car fixed.

Keep you COOL - for sure some drivers will piss you off but always keep in mind that its a hassle to get your car fixed, specially if you only have 1 car , its not like here in the US for example they give you a temporary car to use while they fix your car, that doesnt happen in the Philippines.

An automatic car is more convenient if you have lots of GAS (Petrol) money to burn. A manual car will make your left leg ache (clutch) :-( (Good news: Spa massage is affordable there).

Just be vigilant when driving at night specially when you're alone, dont stop at anything or anyone.

Just make sure you have a camera handy just in case.

All the focus in the news is how the big 3 U.S. auto makers are screwed. How are Japanese car companies doing right now? We own Hondas because American cars flat-out suck.

I'm actually a Canadian living in Philippines temporarily and I see some effects of the economy also here but not as bad as in the US. Of course the Japanese also sell in the US so they are hurting too but since the Asian market is still some what stable they should pull through this and myself I won't be too surprised if some of the larger Japanese company's take over and buy out the US auto makers. Like something like Toyota buying out GM, I could see that happening if things got bad enough and it probably would be for the better too! The simple fact of the matter is the demand for cars will never go away since old cars wear out so eventually they need to be replaced no matter what.

To the Gripper: I have had lots of experience with domestic cars having owned nearly 30 of them and also working in a Ford dealer and in a transmission shop and in several autobody shops. The fact is 90% of American cars are complete junk! They are getting worse all the time, why do people always trust new car reviews? Time is what proves the quality of a vehicle. Ford's are actually the worst, their diesel trucks are beyond junk having junk engines and transmissions and they have a class action suit against them as of current for the defective transmissions they put in every Taurus and Sable ever built. I owned a 99 Taurus with low miles and it literally fell apart and cost me a small fortune. Did you think the Aerostar's or Windstars were good? They were both the biggest lemons to ever hit the road too! Then there is GM who has put a weak tranny in their half ton trucks for over 20 years now and over rated it's towing capacity. And then Dodge with their Caravan's with their junk transmissions. Again GM with their failing head gaskets on pretty much every model of vehicle they made since 1995, Sunfire, Venture, Grand AM to name a few....... Do a little research before you speck and no I'm not saying that all foreign cars are perfect either but they are a step up from an American car for the most part.

What was the lesson learned from Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) and Typhoon Pepeng (Parma) in the Philippines?

If you are outside the Philippines, what was your impression about the typhoon and why it was happened. Is there any fault from the citizens of the Philippines or from the government itself? Is there any purpose why is it happened?

Be prepared. Every person, every house, every community should have a disaster and typhoon plan. At the start of each Typhoon season you should stock up on some basics such as candles, canned food, store rice in waterproof jars, have extra water bottles handy, etc. Before a major storm you should stock up about a weeks worth of food and drinking water. You should have an evacuation plan if it looks like the flooding will be really bad, you should know where you are going, and how you are going to get there.

Communities should also be prepared, and have evacuation shelters available before the storm, and take precautions such as clearing out abandoned cars and other debris from the river and drainage canals, and to lower the water levels in water retention ponds and lakes as early as possible before the storm hits. Enforcing new building codes such as requiring the living areas of all new construction above the 100 year flood level will discourage people from constructing sub-standard housing in flood prone areas.

These types of disasters happen all the time, all across the world. Communities become very relaxed after a long period with no major storms, and then after a disaster hits they scramble to take action. A similar story happened in Florida USA, after decades with no bad storms, Hurricane Andrew hit Miami in 1990, causing a lot of damage and deaths. Florida was so scared they made new building codes and emphasised flood control and disaster planning, so when the many bad hurricanes hit Florida in 2004 and 2005, there was not that much damage or loss of life. Lousiana had not seen a major Hurricane for a long time, so when Hurricane Katrina passed over Florida and hit New Orleans it caused major damage and loss of life. Now New Orleans is re-building with an emphasis on disaster and flood control.

Philippines gets hit by about 20 major Typhoons every year, it is known as 'Typhoon Alley'. Maybe disaster preparedness and Red Cross Volunteer work would be a good national hobby or focus of the schools and news media?
