Answer
we all know that the real problem is that you outfitted your stihl brand vibrator with a toothbrush to save on batteries... you cannot return it to the manufacturer and get a refund because you voided the warranty upon applying the duct tape...

the good news, however, is that it'll still make your chocolate milk quicker than you can manually stir it...

What kind of sentence will a 17 year old girl get for wreckless driving?

Sarah M

There were 5 people in the car, the driver (the 17 year old girl) was injured, and a 17 year old in the backseat was killed. Another teen was left with brain damage. What kind of sentence will she get? Will she be charged as an adult? What will happen to her?

Answer
Oh my Lord...

God be with the families of all involved.

What a tragedy. Teens just do not grasp the risks involved with operating a motor vehicle. It's something I have attempted to drill into my 16-year-old driving step son.

Aside for carrying that event for the rest of her life, which may be far worse than anything the system will throw at her, the legal penalties are going to be based on a great many factors...

What other laws were violated? For example, in some states, she had too many passengers for a 17-year old driver. You said reckless operation. Was speed the only factor? Those kinds of things.

Best case scenario (from her perspective)... involuntary vehicular manslaughter, 30-60 days in a juvenile institution, suspension of license and probation for a few years combined with hours and hours of community service, including a mandate to share the experience at schools with other teens. And probably about $500-$1000 in fines.

Worst case scenario - Reckless homicide, charged as adult, 10-years in prison, fines and court costs.

My links are JUST EXAMPLES and are meant for reference only and not to imply anything. Like I said, a great deal depends on all extenuating circumstances, the judge, and if she's tried as an adult. I do not know the details, where you are from, or your relationship to the parties involved.

How is the best way to look up information on Access 2003 from fields that are not identical?

car info database image

SigmundS o

I have a existing database with fields FirstName, LastName, EmployeeID. I am trying to move the EmployeeID field to a new table that incorporates VIN numbers of vehicles they drive by using the FirstName and the LastName fields for reference. I am using the FirstName and LastName but keep comming up with duplicates of first or last names that keep me from getting a complete list. Both lists have additional information as non driving employees and Vehicles without assigned drivers.

How can you use 2 fields in each table to identify the correct oinformation in each table?

I am new with Access 2003 so please forgive my ignorance.

Answer
Do I understand this correctly? I need to know how your data is currently structured.

1st table: EmployeeID, FirstName, LastName, plus some additional employee information

2nd table: FirstName, LastName, VIN?

My question is: What exactly does the 2nd table represent? Cars?

Are you trying to match employees to vehicles? If so, I recommend this structure:

Employee Info ----> VehicleAssignments <-------Vehicles

The purpose of the table called VehicleAssignments is to assign cars to employees. You will need to include EmployeeID and VehicleID (I suggest you use an ID as opposed to a VIN to uniquely identify cars) in this table. The ID fields, not the name fields, serve as the link fields between tables.

Let me know if you need further help!

How did this insurance company know who my last policy was with and when it expired?

Guy

I let my car insurance lapse with company A. I went into company B to get a quote, and they were able to tell who my last car insurance policy was with and when it expired. How did they know this?
Yes, I gave them my driver's license number and VIN.
Casey, I didn't lie...I'm not sure why you think I did.

Answer
Insurance companies report the info to DMV. Insurance companies have access to the DMV databases.

What will be my monthly expense for maintaining a car?

yahoo car info image

I am 21 years old and planning to buy a used car (don't know which one) for around $5000. I live in Toronto, Canada and I just got my G2.
I am trying to know how much will I have to spend on the car each month, including insurance, gas, maintenance, and other expenses. Any inside tips are also welcome, since obviously I don't have a large budget. Thanks.

P.S. Feel free to share your experience of your first car.

Answer
Razit,
There are so many variables, it's hard to pin down how much it would be for one person without knowing more info.
Here's how you figure it out though -
1. Gas. Gas is high. Most people drive between 15 and 20,000 miles per year. (20k miles = 32,000 kilometers).
Estimate your mileage for your car, and be conservative. It's probably in the 20 mpg range. I don't know if you need to do all this in metric or not, but figure (as an example: 20,000 miles/year divided by 20 mpg = 1000 gallons. 1000 gallons x $3 buck/gallon = $3000 in gas per year. $3k year/12 = $250 per month in gas.

2. Call your insurance company and get a quote on 3 or 4 cars in your price range that you would like to find. Keep in mind that some are much more reliable than others when they are older. For example - don't touch a used chrysler lebaron, and don't touch an older mitsubishi eclipse if it's a turbo (same with talon). They are cool and fast and a moneypit to keep running.
Keep in mind you'll pay a premium for your age. That's just how it is. Take a driver's education course for 40 bucks on a saturday and you'll get a 5-10% discount for the next 3 years or so. It's very much worth it. Also - check into a security discount, and if you can get one, install or buy a vehicle w/ an alarm. You can get them for 200 bucks.

3. Maintenence depends on if you can work on it yourself or if you have anyone that can help with this. If not, figure on at least a 1500 per year. That would probably cover it, but I don't know how much mechanics run in Canada and it will depend on what car you pick. Japanese cars cost alot more to repair but can be alot more reliable than some from the US. Others - it's not worth the difference.

4. Don't forget you'll need tires. Figure on $400-500 every 3 years.

Tips:
At 21, you may be moving frequently due to school, or changing life situations. A pickup is very, very handy to have.
I wouldn't touch a pickup without an extended cab.
The upside on pickups are this: the undercarriage and suspension are heavy duty. The bearings, brakes, shocks, springs, are all sturdier than you find in a similar car and a used higher mileage pickup is going to show less wear and tear because of this.

A pickup is going to have alot more room in the engine compartment, making it easier to work on yourself.
4 wheel drive is nice, but it's a big price premium over 2wd and they get worse gas mileage. Consider your winter driving habits and if 4wd is needed before paying more for it.

Dealerships are pros at making money from people. You'll get a better deal by searching Yahoo! Autos for your zip code and then slowly finding the right car for you.

PIckups normally have timing chains instead of timing belts. Timing belts must be changed every 60-90k miles and it's a major expense. Chains won't need to be replaced. Likewise with an automatic transmission versus a clutch. You'll get alot more mileage out of an automatic and can avoid the cost of replacing a clutch. Both of these repairs are probably imminent on a vehicle in your price range if they are the type to need them. Don't buy an car with brand new automatic transmission fluid in it or if it doesn't shift smoothly. Smell the transmission fluid. It should not smell burnt. It should be a dark red color. Bright red would be brand new. Very dark might be never changed or burnt.

Unless you need the power, go with a lighter truck and a v6 engine. You'll get much better gas mileage, more in line with a car, unless it's a big v6 versus a small v8. My 4.7 liter v8 is similar in gas usage to the 6 cylinder engines in dodge trucks.

Pickups are much cheaper than similar cars when they are brand new, so their resale is also a better deal.

If it were me, and I were you, I'd pick a smaller used extended cab pickup with an automatic tranny. A ford Ranger, or a Dodge Dakota SLT would be great. (I have a Dakota SLT myself by the way.)

- Good luck whatever you do.

How much would it cost to fix the fender of this car?

Mike

I got a car donated to me from a friend, but the right fender is pretty much smashed in.

It's not horrible but, its definitely noticeable.

How much would it cost to get the fender fixed? No paint job. Just getting it pushed back out. Its nearly the entire right fender being smashed in. This also has caused a gap in the passenger door.

People have told me 300 dollars. But ive also heard people say 1000-2000. I'd rather just get a new car having saved that 1k-2k.

Answer
I search relevant products on Ebay, price of fender is between $100 and $300 too. If you want to get more accurate budget on cost to fix the fender of your car, you may call some of your local auto shops to check.

Go to Yahoo Local to search auto shops. Search results should contain contact info and comments of auto shops. Then call them to check the final price.

By the way, an advice for protecting your new car.
Better prepare a quality car cover for protection. When you park your car outdoor, it will keep your car against rain, dust, scratches from pets, tree branches and slight collision, bird droppings and so on.

What and how can I do something that has a great effect on improving global warming?

Varsha

I have been mad about global warming for about 2 years. Reading "Chicken Soup For The Preteen Soul" really made a difference in me. I really want to do something that will improve global warming gravely, but I don't know what. I already recycle paper and save electricity at my home, and then I talked to my friends about it and they said the were in to help me. So now I have more support, so I think I can do something, but please do tell me what. Something that costs money will also work because I don't mind collecting donation, I just want to do something........do help me

Answer
We all need to do what we can to improve our environment. Every little thing you can do helps. However you must be realistic. There is much about Al Gore's movie that was hyped. You need to have all the facts before just believing all you see in Al's movie. Please read on.

Global Warming/Climate Change is not as big a problem as some would have you to believe. A recent article in the New York Times has even asked Al Gore to stop all the hype: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/13/science/13gore.html?ex=1331438400&en=2df9d6e7a5aa6ed6&ei=5090&partner=rssuserland&emc=rss
That same article talks about Al Gore's claim that the oceans could rise 20 feet is exaggerated by 18.08 FEET! The latest IPPC/UN study on the subject says the seas could rise a MAXIMUM of 23 inches. Al was only 18.08 FEET off. That, my freind IS hype...

If you look up any global temperature chart on the net, you'll find the earth's temperature has only increased by about 6/10 of one degree (C) - that's 1.1 degree (F), in the last 125 years. So yes, the globe is warming up, but it's not overheating like some would have you to believe. http://data.giss.nasa.gov:80/gistemp/2005/2005cal_fig1.gif

Other sources debunking Global Warming: http://ff.org/pdf/freedomreport/2006-05-06.pdf
http://meteo.lcd.lu/globalwarming/McLean/Disputed_Science_of_Global_Warming.pdf
There are hundreds of others but this will keep you busy for a while.

The latest research shows that the methane from cows and pigs is a major factor in the increase of "heat trapping gas". It's actually 23 times more potent as a heat trapping gas than is carbon dioxide. http://www.greenpeace.org/international/campaigns/climate-change/science/other_gases According to the newest UN report on Global Warming, "Livestock are responsible for 18 per cent of the greenhouse gases that cause global warming, more than cars, planes and all other forms of transport put together." http://news.independent.co.uk:80/environment/article2062484.ece So if Al Gore and all the alarmists really want to do something about climate change, they MUST become vegetarians and shut down cow and pig farms. I mean seriously, if they truly believe that global warming is as disastrous as they are preaching then they need to stop eating meat, period! I doubt that will happen.

One last thing - Al Gore preaches to you to conserve, but he does not practice it himself. He uses 20 times more energy in his Nashville mansion than the national average. http://www.tennesseepolicy.org/main/article.php?article_id=367 One thing he has not learned is that you MUST practice what you preach... at some point you will get caught as he has.

How to treat asthma and how to prevent allrgic asthma attacks?

car pollution info on Percent of total Canadian emissions of air pollutants (2002)
car pollution info image

donna bell

I have always been sensitive to air pollution, smoke, dust, pollen and other things that trigger asthma. How can I help myselfwith asthma attacks?

Answer
Do not smoke or allow smoking in your home - Babies exposed to tobacco smoke are more likely to get asthma. If a woman is exposed to tobacco smoke during pregnancy, her baby may also be more likely to get asthma.

If animal dander is a problem for you, keep your pet out of the house or at least out of your bedroom, or find it a new home.

If pollen is a problem for you, if possible, stay indoors with the air conditioner on, when the pollen count is high. Do not run the air-conditioning, whether in car or indoors, on the setting that draws in outside air and cools it. Outside air brings with it pollen, and cool, pollinated air is bad for asthma.

To control dust mites, wash your sheets, blankets, pillows, and stuffed toys once a week in hot water. You can get special dust proof covers for your mattress and pillows.

If cold air bothers you, wear a scarf over your mouth and nose in the winter.

There are a number of highly effective herbal and homeopathic remedies that may be used for the successful treatment of asthma and other respiratory conditions. Depending on the severity of the asthma, natural remedies can either reduce or completely eliminate the need for the synthetic drugs and are often used in conjunction with conventional medications as a part of a holistic treatment plan.

Herbal ingredients such as Matricaria recutita and Astralagus are known for their antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties, while homeopathic ingredients such as Mag. Phos. and Nat. Sulph are successful at easing chest and throat constriction and soothing mucous membranes while reducing the presence of phlegm in the chest. Used regularly, natural remedies can help improve respiratory health, reduce the incidence and severity of asthma attacks while strengthening the immune system.

You may get detailed info on the above here http://www.healthherbsandnutrition.com/remedies/a/asthma.htm

What is your opinion? Should I buy a hybrid or a regular car?

yakngirl

My considerations-
Pros: Better for the environment and save money on gas
Con: Gas savings not significant enough to warrant the higher price tag.
I need a new car now, but keep delaying the purchase as I vacillate between hybrid or regular.

Answer
FYI

Toyota makes all Hybrids.

Some Info:
Advantages of a Hybrid Car

There are many advantages, firstly that they save gas. Merging the cleaner energy of an electric motor with the capacity of a gasoline engine allows a hybrid car to save as much as 30 miles a gallon. They are also environmentally friendly, giving out lower toxic emissions compared to conventional gas cars due to less gasoline being burned. It is environmentally friendly, and causes less pollution. Less carbon dioxide is also released into the atmosphere.

Fuel Usage

Nearly all hybrids still need to have gasoline and diesel as their solitary fuel resource although other fuels such as ethanol have also seen occasional use. A number of other hybrid vehicles use hydrogen fuel. Hybrid cars are starting to become more popular in America as more people are considering them as an option when purchasing a new car, but they are still relatively new to the car market. In future years even more hybrids will become available and it is perceived that hybrid cars will become a popular option as people become aware of how they can help the environment and save money at the same time.

Though the plot is fictional, this scenario has occurred many times in the real world. In 1997 Michael Drosnin published a best-selling book titled "The Bible Code," in which he claimed that the Bible contained a code (hidden in numbers and letters) accurately predicting past world events. Drosnin's work was later refuted, with critics demonstrating that the "meanings" he found were simply the result of selectively choosing data sets from a vast sea of random letters.

Similar "hidden codes" were found in other books such as "Moby Dick" and "War and Peace," demonstrating that any sizeable text can produce such codes if you look long enough.

In psychology, the tendency for the human mind to find coincidences, patterns, and connections in random data is called apophenia.

What is the best sedan for carrying a child?

car info msn image

V K

What is the best, safest, economical sedan for carrying a child? Looking for a car 10K to 15K price range. We already have SUV for my wife. I need a safe sedan to commute 20 miles to work and occasionally carry a child in sedan. I prefer the car with all the most current air bag technology. I need the car for driving in Washington, DC area.

Answer
In the 10K to 15K price range, look into the Hyundai Elantra or Hyundai Sonata. The Elantra is the compact sedan and the Sonata is the family-sized sedan. Both cars have 4 and 5 star crash ratings, according to MSN Autos which gets its info from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Find out more about the cars at http://www.hyundaiusa.com/

The website lists MSRPs as a little higher, but check with dealers. I live in New York where prices are probably quite similar to the DC area and I see newspapers advertising Elantras starting around 10K and Sonatas around 13-15K.

My friend has an Elantra and it's definitely a comfortable car with regards to the cabin, controls, and passenger experience.

Just as a personal note from me to you, you might notice that subcompacts are inexpensive and fuel-efficient, but if I were you I wouldn't get one since you'll be carrying a child and very small cars don't hold up well when they are hit by very big cars.

where can i find info on car auctions?

diego

I live in San jose and would like to attend car auctions or online too. I need sources please. Thanks.

Answer
Hi:
When my dad was a dealer I worked as his 'DMV Clerk' and bookkeeper and also attended auctions with him in Hayward (forget the name but you can see the car lot from 880 right North of Whipple) and Tracy (Golden Gate right off of 205 to the West of Tracy).

But these are for licensed dealers only. You can not get in or bid without being a licensed car dealer or an employee. That requires having a display area, bond, some classes and other requirements.

We sometimes went to public 'open' auctions but did not buy that many units because either the pricing was too high or too much work required to restore.

For private party, the best deal is Internet sites on Yahoo or MSN, Craig's List or the newspaper. Auctions are fast paced and really hyped up. They are not a good place to buy cars for most non-dealers.

Take your time, check carefully, look for oil leaks underneath with a flashlight (ha ha, that was sometimes my job). Know what you are buying to estimate reconditioning costs.
Good Luck,
Jin Ju

What is the difference between crazy cat ladies and crazy pig ladies?

daisy

This lady, and she's young, keeps 40 pigs in her house. Isn't there a law or something?
I would provide a news video of this, but it would be deleted.

* Yahoo mail is completely scrapped for me tonight, so I may as well ask a question.
Anyone else having email problems?
.
It is not my computer. Go into Answers- Mail category and see the endless complaint questions. Like all their other efforts, not all are being worked on at the same time.

Answer
I've had no problems at all with my email.

As for the crazy ladies, it might interest you to know that pigs given half a chance, are one of the cleanest animals in the world. That is a fact. While cats on the other hand carry more diseases than the majority. Therefore my answer would have to be that the pig lady is the smarter of the two.

Breeding pure bred cats and dogs whats your opinion?

Meow

I have found that for some reason people think that breeding purebred cats , for the purpose of showing and enhancing the breed is almost a crime but breeding dogs for the same purpose is ok , I am curious about the ratio please post your opnions = ) .
darla only bad breeders can live off of an income from breeding animals. Breeding animals that are healthy happy and conform to breed standards is very expensive and in my experiance costs way more then any income you might make from selling a kitten, vet care, registry fees, show fees , travel , good quality food etc make for an expensive hobby

Answer
Many of the answers, so far, include valid points.

As a breeder of pedigreed cats myself, I have never had anyone challenge me on my motives or ethics. However, a few people have assumed that all of this work that I do with and for my cats and my breed is a "business". It isn't. I don't profit. It is a VERY expensive hobby.

Unfortunately there are a very few people out there who's actions as breeders ruin the reputation of the fancy for all of us. They are either motivated by money, cut corners and care very little about the health or well-being of their animals, or they have too many cats in comparison with the time, money and other resources available to them.

Raising cats, unlike dogs, has two challenges.

First, some cats need to be bred more than once a year; they are prolific producers and a cat's health may be at stake if she has too many unbred heats. Therefore, its very easy to have too many cats at a time if you don't have a waiting list of forever homes. If those cats get sick, a breeder often must treat every cat in the house/cattery at tremendous cost. It can get out of hand if one is not prepared physically and financially to care for many cats at once.

Second, raising cats can be very isolating. Dogs spend a lot of time outside. Pedigreed cats, typically, are indoor-only animals. For me, as someone who also has a job outside of the home, I do little more than work at my job and then work at home to do either housework or care for the animals. I don't get out much. I can't just meet up with a friend and take our pets for a walk. I don't see my friends and family who don't like my cats. The fancy seems to attract introverted people and often people who are loners stick with it; the extroverts don't, in my experience. Not that there is anything wrong with being quiet, shy or introverted, however these people and what they do are often misunderstood. Unfortunately the fancy also attracts what seems to be a number of self-isolating people with mental health problems; they prefer cats to people.

I think these two reasons contribute to the image of "crazy cat ladies". I am a self-declared sane and ethical cat lady... but there are some days I do come close to the edge. LOL I am an extrovert and I do think you MUST be crazy to go through what we do for the cats and not profit. Crazy for cats or crazy for... ? LOL

The one thing I promise to myself, my family and my cats is that we'll never end up on the news for being dirty or over-run. I think its upto the breeders in the fancy to educate others about what we do and why and how it should be done propperly.

That's part of the reason why I post here. I also love talking about cats and learning, too.

My dad's wanting to see if we find any information about a car wreck my Cousin, and his mom were in,thursday april 3.

they were driving more to the southside, and they were in a little red car. it maybe was around 3-5. my aunt's now in the hospital, and we need information.

what news channels and stuff should i check?
SORRRY, i forgot to put the statee.
were in oklahoma city.

Answer
it depends what state you live in. go on a local news stations website and type in car accident in their search pane. then look for the date that it happened. but the main thing is it depends on what state you live in and even if you do log on to their website, they still might not have anything on their website because unfortunately not all car accidents get posted on their websites or even the news tv program. i hope this helps and i hope that your aunt's health improves. much luck and my prayers are with you and your family.

Why did they KILL my Ayrton?

Shark

TO ALL WHO ARE WELL FAMILIAR WITH FORMULA ONE:

It's so obvious that the "accident" that killed Ayrton Senna was "engineered" by someone/some group.

C'mon, what is mathematical probabilty that the in-car camera's channel was changed in the last second? That explanation does not make any sense.

The video that was given to us after Senna's death was missing the last second.

You can watch this video here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TpCsJKRF4PE&mode=related&search=

In my opinion, the camera kept rolling till it impacted the wall where it was destroyed during the impact. So, the real video with the impact is out there but we don't have it.

I know this is old news but Ayrton is on my mind for a long time. I was watching F1 since 5 years old.

So, can someone please give any comments/opinions?
I know the recording medium is NOT on the car. I know it is taken from the video signals from the car's cameras.

Answer
Unless you are talking about some vague South American conspiracies, it would make no sense to anyone to kill Senna except maybe Schuey ( that's a joke) because he went on to win the WC that year.
Its rare to see a steering wheel break. But conspiracies apart, there are too many myriad factors in racing and no one including the driver has full control over them.
If someone wanted senna gone, there were better, less public gaze avenues.
So let us lay him to rest. He had a good time.
RIP

What GPS tracking units do I need to find the tracker within a few feet?

Yesterday (my birthday) I rode my brother's bike to k-mart to buy a bike lock because I was gonna ride the bike somewhere today. When I got out, the bike was gone with no leads/evidence leading to where it may be.

Now obviously that pissed me off a little. So, I am going to buy a new bike, and hide a gps unit inside it. Along with a hidden camera, it's going to be like the show bait car. I looked it up and actually found a news team did exactly this. Except they needed some handheld antenna thing to find it within however many feet. I've looked online and can't find anything like it. Anyone experienced in stuff like this?

Answer
A GPS with a US and Russian satellite receiver should be able to resolve to a few feet, because the more satellites in view, the better the math can triangulate position. An alternate method would be a US only GPS receiver plus a separate position transmitter and handheld receiver/directional antenna. If the GPS and cellphone technology incorporated two way GPS position (the bike part knowing its position and the position of the interested owner), the separate location transmitter could be switched on only when the owner was close to the stolen bike, saving battery power.

The equation is B = {A[(1+r/n)^nt -1}/1-(1+r/n)^-n/k.
I know that finding the equation for t (all the other variables are solved for) involves using natural log (ln), but I can't figure it out for the life of me. Anybody help?

What are all the locations where birds/fish (any animals) have died and the amount?

Mario

Like stated in the above question where are all the locations worldwide where birds/fish have died with no explanation in the past week?
Also what are the number dead?

Answer
Brazil, New Zealand, Florida, Maryland, Texas, Kentucky, Arkansas, Louisiana, Sweden, Italy, and England

Arkansas- 100,000 dead drum fish, and the i think it was 5,000 (or 3,000, i'm not sure, sorry!) blackbirds.
Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana- Thousands 'American Coots' and Sparrows found dead.
Maryland- 2 million fish dead.
Florida - Thousands of fish dead.
New Zealand- Hundreds of dead 'Snappers'.
Sweden- 50 'Jackdaws' dead.
England - 40,000 'Devil Crabs' washed up on shores.
Brazil - 100 tons of fish wash ashore.
Italy- 8000 Doves fall from the sky.

It's also crabs.
The scientist and researchers are trying to find out what happened.
They say it can be the end of the world, as stated in the bible (Night Line says this, i'm not saying this personally) and it can also be a sign from the Mayans prediction (Though i read on Yahoo! News that the people who studied the Mayans prediction read it wrong, and theres actually like, 100 more years or something till the Mayans prediction of the world ending). Or it can be just pollution, or as the researcher said, "The black birds can't see in the dark like owls. Just like, humans, if we walk around at midnight outside, we can't see very well. It's the same for the birds. If they were to leave their perch at night-time, they could have ran into a tree, house, car, eachother, mailbox, etc." Or it could have been their navigation thing.

But, animals don't just die. There's always a reason.

When do I take my toddler out of the car seat and into a booster?

car news design on ... Car revival trend and takes inspiration from the 1971 Plymouth model
car news design image

livelife

I have read all different answers on this topic. My daughter is only 3 but she is 36 inches tall and 40 pounds. Is it safe to put her into a booster? Her car seat harness is starting to get very tight (I have loosened it as much as possible) Thanks!

Answer
Car crashes are the leading cause of both disability and death for children in the United States- and they are for a reason.

Just a few weeks ago, a 3 year old was killed while riding in a booster seat: http://www.ktnv.com/news/local/187038601.html

My greatest sympathies are for the parents- it really just takes an instant to loose a child.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends that children ride in a forward facing car seat with a harness for as long as possible. The AAP recommendations say that moving a child to the next step is a decrease in your child's level of protection. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says to keep 4 to 7 year olds in a car seat with a harness until they have outgrown it: http://www.safercar.gov/parents/RightSeat.htm

There are many car seats with tall top harness strap slots and high forward facing weight limits. Here is my recommended list:

-Baby Trend Fastback (18" top slots; 70 lb weight limit with harness)
-Evenflo SecureKids 300 or 400 model (18" top slots; 65 lb weight limit with harness)
-Graco Nautilus (18" top slots; 65 lb weight limit with harness)
-Graco Argos 70 (18" top slots; 70 lb weight limit with harness)
-Recaro Prosport (19" top slots; 90 lb weight limit with harness)
-Britax Frontier 85 (20" top slots; 85 lb weight limit with harness)
-Britax Frontier 85 SICT (20" top slots; 85 lb weight limit with harness)

We all know that car seats pass standards. But what are these standards? Federal standards say that a child's head can move as far as 32 inches from the vehicle seat back when installed without the top tether. The top tether is extremely important as it reduces this forward movement as much as 4-6 inches. If you were to measure 32 inches in your vehicle- you may be very surprised.

Every car seat on the market comes with the top tether, however, vehicles made after September of 2002 have factory installed top tether anchors. These anchors can be found on the rear shelf in a sedan, on the back of a captain's chair, or on the ceiling in an SUV.

The Britax Frontier 85 only goes up to 65 lbs without the top tether, however using the top tether is always recommended. The SICT model of the Frontier 85 does not require the top tether at any weight.

A booster seat just sits on the vehicle seat. It is not attached to the vehicle seat in anyway. Then you thread the lap and shoulder seat belt through the belt guides as said in the manual. A booster seat is designed to lift a child up for a better seat belt fit- by placing the lap belt on the child's hips and the shoulder belt between the child's neck and collar bone.

Not all booster seats are doing their job- some boosters put the lap belt on the child's tummy. During a crash, it will sink in, injuring the child's inner organs and spinal cord. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rates how well booster seats position the adult seat belt on the child's body.

Here are their results: http://www.iihs.org/research/topics/boosters/default.html

If you are going to put your 3 year old in a booster anyways, I would recommend the Graco Turbobooster in highback as it does a great job positioning the adult seat belt.

As a side note, all car seat manufacuturers prohibit the use of aftermarket products. This includes a child's bulky winter coat. This is because during a crash, the coat will compress, leaving the harness really loose on a child. This will mean that head excursion will increase, or in a severe case, the child will be ejected from their seat.

Why is it when we see a car chase on the TV we are so compelled to watch it?

channel 3 news car crash image
Q. Seriously Why??? I work at a resturant and during the lunch hour its turned onto the news channels such as FOX, NBC, CBS, CNN etc. The few times I've been working in the past couple months theres alsways someone who steals a car, breaks into a car, soemthing happens that turns into a car chase.

And i notice people are literally GLUED to th TV. They can't take the eyes off it. People all of a sudden are becoming friends and where there talking about: Is there someone in the car? Do they have a gun? Is it a man or women? How fast are they going? Where are they?

I don't knwo if theres some kind of psychological explanation or what but its just seems anywhere at home, at a friends house at a resturant a car chase no matter what your age is 10, 18, 27, 45, 67 any age man or women you love to wtach a car drive on a freeway for 3 hours until the very very end where usally they get out of the car and give up.

Any input would be great, I've just been curious for a while.

Its like Nascar; round and round and round. just waiting for a crash...

What TV shows do you like to watch or usually watch everyday?

Jon W

I know everybody likes to watch certain TV shows or sitcoms everyday. Every individual watches something different compared to others. I'd like to know what most people watch these days.

It could be anything from the news, cartoons like the simpsons and family guy, MTV shows, discovery channel or animal planet, reality shows, the list goes on and on. Just list the ones YOU like to watch, in which it sort of feels like a routine everyday thing (assuming you don't spend all your days working and having no time for TV anymore).

Here's mine: When I wake up, I usually watch some news, then later watch First Take on ESPN or other sport shows, I like to watch shows like The Simpsons, Family Guy, Everybody Loves Raymond, Around the Horn and PTI. Sometimes I turn to the Discovery Channel to watch the shows like "How's its Made" and Man vs. Wild. At night I like to watch shows on TRU TV like Forensic Files and Amazing Videos (car chases and crashes are cool), or if I want to fall asleep I watch the shows on animal planet then just snooze off. I don't like reality shows (sooo played out), so ignore them altogether, well unless there's a hot girl on there I might watch it for a minute or so =). Well that's me, what about you?

Answer
2-6am- adult swim
6-7am- Angel
go to school, then come home
2:30-3pm- Law & Order or Just Shoot Me
3-4pm- Yes, Dear
4-6pm Charmed
from 6 pm and so forth I pick random shows to watch

I have to choose a theory and give an example of how it relates to the news today. I'm not sure that I quite understand. Can someone help me?
The theories I have to choose from are Inheritance, cells, biological classification, bioenergetics, homeostasis, and ecosystems.

Answer
You could use the classification system, which was created by Linnaeus, to show how cars have evolved over time.

What is the purpose of news? Do you think in today's time the news is doing what its intention is?

bballmvp61

I feel as if the purpose of the news is to provide us with information. But as I analyze the news, the stories that they are showing are not what they used to be. For example the news would consist mostly of war updates, or state what is going on. News today is more random stories that gets their station more viewers. Am I the only one who sees it that way?

Answer
You try putting a whole countries news, as well as international news into a half hour show.
And at the same time, keep everyone happy in terms of what they want to hear and what they dont.

Its impossible.

There is two sides to every story. Producers of news programs struggle daily as to what they should air, what is popular to air , what is necessary to air, what has to be aired, whether they air something and what reaction it has from viewers. As well as fit in sponsored commercials (which everyone hates) that pays for the news show to be produced.
Keeping in mind, in that hakf a hour show. Ten minutes is taken up by sport and weather. Possibly another five minutes of sponsored commercials.
So there goes 15 minutes of the news show already, without even telling anyone any news.

Feel like being a news show producer?............

As i said, its impossible to keep everyone happy in regards to what they want to hear.

I could go on..........After all that. The producer also has bosses and network bosses they have to report to. Questioned as to why they did not show a particular news story and lost ratings to another network.

So your copping it from the viewers for not telling every news story in the country in a half hour show , as well as international news. And your copping it from behind, by you network bosses because of ratings.

What you want to hear you have to google. Its the only way. Because prime time news can not fit all that news in a half hour show OR an hour show.
In fact, if they told you every news story there was, it would be a 24 hour show, running around the clock without stopping.

Ask yourself how much despair and bad news do you want. Because quite simply, all news is bad news.
Your not going to hear how your neighbour planted roses on a sunny day.
Your going to hear about war, rapes , car accidents, volcanoes, terrorism or any other million bad things.

And even if they did do all that that you request, then you would be complaining you can not understand the news reporter. You dont like their hairstyle. You dont like their makeup. His/her nose is too big.
Blah blah blah!

Just do what everyone else does. Buy a newspaper and read it at your own pace.

WittyWease

Also, is it possible to find a "kit car" for the '66 Mustang? What engines are available for a '66 Mustang kit car?

Answer
sorry, no kit car, but lots of parts

Here are some specs http://boxwrench.net/specs/ford_289_302-5.0.htm
the only engines that will fit in the early Mustangs (65 and 66) are the 302,289,260,250,200,170 because of the narrow engine bay created from the coil towers.

Actually they all came out in the 65/66 Mustang except the 302 and 250 which came out in 68/69 Horse power ranged from 120 in the six to 271 in the eight.
lots more info here

How much does it cost to make a nice kit car?

wx4nc

Say you have an older (but nice) Fiero laying around, and some money to blow through.. how much would it cost to build a kit car? I know it probably varies depending on how close you want to make the replica and what kind of car you're building towards, but I can't find any info anywhere on the numbers. Something like this would be nice...

http://img.worldcarfans.com/2008/11/large/zorba-g40-murcielago-kit-car_1.jpg

Thanks guys!!!

Answer
To do a really nice rendition count on spending 50% - 75% more than you spend on the kit itself. And that does not include your labour. You can cheap out but the end product will show it and you will be disappointed.

I am in the market to buy a new car in the up coming year or two. I want a hyprid becuase of the gas milage ect... I don't really want a super small car Honda insight or Toyota Prius more of a standard size, unless it will get wicked good gas milage. Does anyone know if there will be any new hybrids coming out within the next year or so that I should look for?

Answer
Unfortunately, most manufacturers so not announce their upcoming hybrid release plans. Not all hybrids are created alike (some are more geared towards performance (acceleration and available power) than to fuel economy), and some have more hybrid features than others (full hybrid vs. mild hybrid). So, just because it says hybrid doesn't mean that it has "wicked good gas mileage."

So, you would be best to find the best fuel economy vehicle in the vehicle class that you are looking at. For your choices in the US, I'd suggest:
http://www.fueleconomy.gov/
http://www.epa.gov/greenvehicles/

I'm not entirely sure what size of vehicle that you are looking for. The Honda Insight was discontinued in the 2006 model year, so you'll only find that 2-seater in the used market. Meanwhile, the Toyota Prius is currently a midsize hatchback, which is the same size class as the popular Toyota Camry, or Nissan Altima, or Chevy Malibu, or Saturn Aura (all of which also have hybrid versions available) or the also popular Honda Accord (which had a performance-tuned hybrid option available in the past, but is now discontinued and only available used). In fact, of the currently available hybrid vehicles in the US for the 2008 model year, the only ones that are smaller than a Toyota Prius are the compact-sized Honda Civic Hybrid and the Lexus GS450h.

If you are planning on the US Federal income tax credit for your hybrid purchase, the sooner you purchase, the better, as there is a sunset phaseout provision set for after a manufacturer has sold a certain number of hybrids. The Toyota/Lexus credits have passed this sunset already (so no more credits), and Honda is currently in the phaseout period...

Hybrids do cost less in the long term than their conventional counterparts. (Intellichoice used a 5 year ownership comparison in 2006) See http://www.intellichoice.com/press/Hybrid-Survey-2006 and http://www.intellichoice.com/carBuying101/HypeOverHybrids )

While Consumer Reports in 2006 only found the Toyota Prius and the Honda Civic Hybrid would pay off within the same 5 year frame. The Honda Accord Hybrid, the Ford Escape Hybrid, the Lexus RX400h, and the Toyota Highlander Hybrid were also studied. (I'll note that there was a mathematical error in the initial publication of Consumer Reports' hybrid vehicle cost analysis, which a retraction was published later... http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11637968/ ) Since this publication, many more hybrid models have become available, so I can't use this to say about hybrids "in general." However, in the US, the Toyota hybrids have sold so many that they no longer qualify for the US Federal hybrid vehicle income tax credit, but Honda and others still have theirs.

Check out the April issue of Consumer Reports if you want reliability information. Here are their top picks for both new and used vehicles:

and the Prius was just rated top Green Car for the 5th year in a row: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/cars/new-cars/news/2007/04/top-picks-for-2007-4-07/overview/0704_top-picks-2007.htm

The Prius is also in edmunds' used cars best bets list as well, and their lowest true cost to own list (2007 and 2008).

Announced hybrids to keep an eye out for are the upcoming plug-in hybrids due out in 2010, a plug-in capable version of the Toyota Prius and the new Chevy Volt.

The hybrid batteries are typically placed behind the rear seat/above the rear axle, and are not prone to damage in a vehicular accident. (Nor is it easy to cut the bright orange HV cables that run under the car, either.) The hybrid battery is disconnected from the rest of the car when the vehicle is off (SOP for first responders is to turn off/remove key to disable vehicle in an accident) and also when the air bags are deployed. Only a poorly-trained emergency department will not approach your vehicle in an accident. (Emergency Responder guides are available from all hybrid manufacturers for free, and most manufacturers also provide free training sessions when asked.)

The hybrid batteries are warrantied (Full, not pro-rated) for at least 8 years/80,000 miles or longer, depending on manufacturer, out to 10 years/150,000 miles if an AT-PZEV model in a CA emissions state.

How and when did Hyundai start improving their car?

david

If someone to link me to a page or explain the evolution of the Hyundai cars and how they slowly improved their cars that would be great

thanks

Answer
Here's a couple nice links, essentially the company took on new leadership around 1999 and made a rapid turnaround in quality from that point forward. A rare case of a son taking over a company and actually improving upon it.

How To fix a scuff in plastic car interior?

car body news on Detroit Auto Show 2014 Gmc Yukon Denali | Car Release Date
car body news image

Ronzilla

My wife is going to kill me, I drove her 3 day old car to work, (2008 Honda CRV) and I had to move a bunch of PCs and one of them scuffed the dash it took the paint right off.

Is there a way to fix this, I was thinking about using model paint, the spots are pretty small but she will definitely kill me if she sees it.

Please help!!!

Answer
Most auto body paint supply shops sell vinyl dye. It comes in rattle cans or can be custom color mixed and matched to your vehicle. I'm not sure how well this would work on a small area though applying with a brush or air brush. I would buy her one of those nice dash covers and a dozen roses. Be sure to hide all of the sharp and blunt objects around the house before you break the news to her though!

Good Luck

How do I relocate an article I saw earlier in the week on Yahoo News?

I saw an interesting article on Yahoo News concerning natural foods that are good fat burners, such as green tea, cinnamon and some others that I can't remember. I would like to find it again but so far I've had no luck.
