The news feeds us tons of information every day, from what is good / bad for you to details about events in other countries. I think a lot of people believe that news stations are credible, and willingly believe anything that is told to them. How should we perceive this information to be able to decide what is true / lies? Is it safe to trust news broadcasts?

No! try democracynow.org! Many are brainwashed daily into believing that corporate and gov't press releases are real news which they are not! The mainstream media has no incentive to find or report the truth anymore. They are their to keep the consumers churning while the rich fat ones get fatter on the profits generated by an economic system that operates with no ethics. We only notice the deficiency when the skimmers take too much profit from the middle class and the system breaks down. (eg bankers, oilcos, and car makers.)

I got this feed from the BBC website. It shows the description and everything but how do these news events update and change? I mean wont these news events get old after a few days?

Actually RSS is the XML, to correct the post above. The RSS is updated on the back end, using a server side technology like PHP or ASP. You can also manually update it, but that is very tedious.

Most of the news sites, blogs, etc. that have RSS have their articles/posts saved in a database. The RSS feed script then just needs to read from this database and display the required data in the proper XML format. These sites will then either update the RSS on a regular basis, or, more usually, 'create' a new file every time it is requested, the same way the articles themselves are created. Usually, the RSS feed will just have the 15 or so most recent articles from a site (or section of the site in the case of most news sites).

What do you think about the possible smoking ban for Illinois' beaches and parks?

I heard about this yesterday on the NBC5 news.

Personally I think its a load of crap that will never work. For one its an open public area, whats gonna happen next is it gonna be illegal to smoke in my own home?

I want to hear your views on the ban and any feedback as to what I feel if you agree or disagree.

Just the latest action in the systematic dismantling of the tobacco industry !!
They have recently past a law (in California) that goes into affect in January that makes it illegal for an individual to smoke in their own car if anyone under age 18 is riding with them ---- the home is next -- they will run this under the "child endangerment" laws first --- then they will top it off with the total outlawing OF tobacco !!

The thing that MOST nonsmokers do not get ---- and the thing that they are NOT being told --- is the FACT that tobacco has a MAJOR tax load on its shoulders --- and many programs and services --- both state AND Federal run from these tax bases --- When Tobacco goes -- so does this revenue -- and when that revenue goes --- the agencies and programs that run from its money --- will NOT be shutting down !! The non-smoker will see tax increases like they have never in their life even DREAMED of !!! Billions !!! And, those dismantling the industry and those supporting them WILL NOT BE ADMITTING THIS TO ANYONE !!!!! For, it flys in the face of what they are trying to do !!

Next, look for the regulation of fatty foods and legislation against people who opt to feed their children on anything considered "an alternative" diet of any kind !! Full bore regulation of our entire lives is what these people are after -- and they are setting precidents here that will make these other things --- EXTREMELY EASY in the future -- they're just taking the "less popular things" first !!!!!

Arab spring is where normal Arab people rebelled against corruption, discrimination, opportunistic, living under slavery of dictators and their families and relatives. The current uprising started In the Syrian city of Daraâa on the border with Jordan. Where some kids, influenced by the TVâs news of the Arab spring in other Arab states, wrote things on a wall where the kids were forcefully taken from their parents, imprisoned, tortured, their nails were taken of, and at the beginning refused to free them under any circumstances. As a result their parents rebelled and some of them were shot died by the regime. This resulted the uprising to start and escalate in many other areas of Syria.
For many months, the regime as used to in the last 42 years, used extreme force, torture, and direct killing against peaceful protestors and accused them of all kind of bad accusations and telling the world that they have been fighting terrorists. The same way did in the last 42 years of tutoring under the lie that they were fighting Israel and America. Anybody opposed that lie was taken, tortured, considered traitor and executed. They banned the international media from entering Syria and converted it into a large prison. All that resulted in the escape of soldiers with their arms from the army and established small armed groups to protect civilians. Later, armed struggle against the regime started after months of daily killing of civilians and no help of any kind from outside Syria.

Now over 30.000 were killed, 100s of thousands in prisons, women have been raped by the regime, Kids and babies have been slaughtered, millions fled the country, cities have been destroyed by most sophisticated arms. The Syrian regime even, have been bullying, harassing, and threatening Syrians and/or others around the world who opposed. Unfortunately, still there is nobody really helping to stop the massacres until now.

Al-Baâath party has 2 branches, one ruling Syria under Al-Assad and the other was ruling Iraq under Saddam Husain with the same ideology and ideas.

Now, Al-Assad family and cousins and relatives control absolutely everything in Syria, and they became one of the richest worldwide and that is one reason why they do not want to leave power.
The other reason is that they are Alawis, a religious group who follow the Shia (Iran) in Islam; and that why Iran is unconditionally supporting them. Iran has been helping the regime by influencing Russia and china in the UN, supplying the regime with arms and Iranian soldiers. Iranian official said that the victory of Assad is the victory of Iran.

Nobody is assisting the Syrians. (Assad = Hitler)'s regime has been taking advantage of the careless and reluctant Arab and international situation and has been dropping TNT barrels on civilians and committing genocide. The current Holocaust is going on in Syria

don't think that terrorist can sneak in the same way? Do people sleep better thinking that only 'Mexicans' sneak into the US?
As a nation we are extremely vulnerable. We are not secure, nor are we protected. Yet on the news we feed information to terrorist all the time. This branch of the armed forces is doing 'blah'. We have developed 'blah' technology.

violent illegal aliens was the newlywed couple, James and Emilia Lee
of Huachuca City, Arizona, who had been married only six weeks. They
were killed Oct. 16 when a truckload of at least 17 illegal aliens

Topeka â When Victor Anzua-Torres asked the family of Ryan Ostendorf, the man he killed, for forgiveness, Ryanâs father turned his back.

âHe has no right to speak to me,â Robert Ostendorf said later.

Anzua-Torres, 29, was sentenced Thursday to prison for 13 years and nine months for driving drunk and crashing his car into one driven by Ryan Ostendorf, who was 28, a paramedic and Kansas University student who dreamed of being a doctor.

The sentencing capped an emotional hearing where Ryanâs family, friends and co-workers spoke about his compassion, helpfulness and bright future, and how Anzua-Torresâ actions wrecked the lives of many.

The crash occurred the night of Dec. 5, 2005, on U.S. Highway 40 near Shawnee Heights Road.

Ostendorf was driving to work at American Medical Response. Many of his co-workers responded to the accident, rendering aid to Anzua-Torres and others at the scene.

âAn enormous holeâ

Anzua-Torres had a blood-alcohol level of 0.26 percent, more than three times the legal limit of 0.08, authorities said. He had no driverâs license, had a prior drunken-driving arrest and had been deported as an illegal immigrant once before.

He was driving a Cadillac Escalade east in the westbound lane when he struck Ostendorfâs Jeep Cherokee.

âMy family has an enormous hole where Ryanâs life ought to be,â said Ryanâs mother, Jo Ann Ostendorf, of Gothenburg, Neb.

She wore Ryanâs lab coat from KU as she spoke in the Shawnee County courtroom.

She said Ryan was a biology student at KU and planned on being a cardiologist.

âHe wanted to mend broken hearts and he died of one,â she said, adding that KU granted him a degree after his death. The mother said she would miss her sonâs bear hugs and smile. âI will never hear him say, âI love you Mama.ââ

Meagan Kennedy, Ryanâs fiancé who also is a paramedic, said Ryan was her âsoul mate and love of my life.â

âYou left all of us with holes in our hearts that can never be filled,â she said to Anzua-Torres.

Anzua-Torres frequently looked down during the statements, sometimes dabbing tears from his eyes as an interpreter translated for him.

Speaking through the interpreter, Anzua-Torres asked the family to forgive him and said he felt remorse for Ryanâs death.

âI never wanted this to happen,â he said, sometimes reading from a handwritten sheet of notebook paper. âI ask forgiveness with all my heart for the pain I have caused.â

Maximum penalty

Shawnee County Assistant Dist. Atty. Karen Wittman sought the maximum penalty for Anzua-Torres.

âHe set out to hurt somebody that night,â she said. A friend had tried to drive, but although Anzua-Torres was drunk, he demanded that he drive to show everyone how âbadâ he was, she said.

âOn that day, you canât get any more selfish than what he was,â she said.

Shawnee County District Court Judge Nancy Parrish sentenced Anzua-Torres to the maximum for the reckless second-degree murder charge: 11 years and six months.

The remaining time on his sentence was due to additional charges related to the incident including driving under the influence and not having a driverâs license.

Parrish ordered the sentences to run consecutively. Earlier, Anzua-Torresâ public defender, Richard Jones, requested that the sentences for the various offenses run at the same time.

But Parrish declined.

âYou have really exhibited a flagrant disregard of our laws,â she told Anzua-Torres.

She noted he had ignored an order to receive treatment after his previous drunken-driving conviction. He also had been deported in 2000 and been arrested for several other offenses, including possession of drug paraphernalia.

After the hearing, Jo Ann Ostendorf said she appreciated that Parrish gave Anzua-Torres the maximum sentence on the murder charge, but added, âFor my sonâs life, it is not enough.â

How do I build a DIY humane mouse trap to catch a pet mouse in a car?

My pet mouse escaped from his box in my car, a 2004 Chevy Classic. I have had no luck attempting to catch him. I know he is still there as I have set food aside for him to eat, and its been nibbled at or gone. I would like to make sure my mouse lives. Any suggestions from anyone else that has experienced a similar situation??

i don't recommend building a mouse trap, there is no guarantee that it will be a humane trap. there are a few humane traps out there, one that works really great is the tomcat multi-catch. it's grey with a clear panel so you can see if you caught something, and it comfortably holds up to 10 mice. i got mine at walmart, but they don't always have it. try a feed store maybe, or order online. pretty much every other humane mousetrap is either not attractive enough to make the mouse enter it, or they can get out too easily.

it's pretty bad news that your mouse is loose in the car. they are so small, they can get through pretty much any opening. they can do a fair bit of damage, or they could get caught in the engine while you are driving and burn.

since this is a pet mouse, it may be slightly easier to retrieve your little pal than if it was a wild one. did he have any favorite toys to hide in? my mice used to have this tennis ball with a hole cut out of it, i could hardly get them out of it. you could take the toy, add some of his old bedding material and a snack or two, and just wait up for him one night. leave it in your car in the same spot you left the food before, keep the car dark, and when you hear chewing sounds, aim a flashlight at the toy to keep him from coming out (the light will scare him a little).

Why are we told so much sports news that takes time away from the important stuff?

Even the weather which is certainly more important is lengthily cast and often leaves you not knowing what is likely to happen in your zip code. Then the news casters are like bull dogs when they get hold of juicy gossip on one incident that you hear till you get nauseous. All the while you wait and are curious about the tease of a new development on a cancer cure they throw out and every commercial break. How can they improve? What should they do?

There are many alternate outlets for scores and game times, but the regular news cast are at a time when the bulk of viewers are tuned in. I wonder if a real survey was taken, just how sports would do. Many as I do not need to know every detail of the teams and what the playing jocks philosophical outlook is. I have tried to surf to another station, but they are wise to that and are speaking sports also. they compete but also know each other too well now. Certainly there are too many things to report it all, and the public is too dumbed down to understand anything but sports, car crashes, and drive-by shootings. Like the print media does, they need feed-back and voice of the people input to create more personal interest. The PBS stations are better sometimes, only they run ads now and are always begging Geeeee's!!!
