Is there a free website to look up a VIN prior to 1981?

I have a 1979 Ford F-100 and I am curious about the history of this truck. I have looked on other websites but they all say the VIN needs to be 17 characters long and mine isn't.

Answer
Places that you might find online to check a
VIN for vehicles are places that have limited
resources beyond a few years back. Also,
these places want you to join, and pay a fee
to use their site for their resources.

The best way I have ever found is to contact
the manufacturer of the vehicle to inquire about
when the car was made, exactly what it had
when it was made, and in what state is was
first sold. Sometimes they can give more info
due to warranty work done while it was under
warranty.

There are other sites such as CarFax, and
StatewideGovRecords.com. You can find
many such places. You can also find sites
that have info on certain year models of a
particular manufacturers vehicle model, but
these are usually private sites that only
focus on that one particular model by one
manufacturer. I don't know of any site that
would have records of all manufacturers
cars, so it just becomes a 'Pot Luck' type
of situation.

Now, as far as just your particular truck,
you can probably check with CarFax to
see if they have anything on it. Other
than that you probably would have to
contact Ford directly to see what they
might have.

You are right that all VIN numbers are
supposed to be 17 characters in length.
I would imagine that it is possible for one
to have not had all of them. Double check on
your truck to see if you can find more than
just the door, and dash area for any mistakes.
If it does not have all of them, and you can't
get a good check on it with Ford, or CarFax,
I would contact your state police to find out
if your truck might have been stolen, and a
new VIN added. I have seen this happen a
couple of times before. I even had an employee
of mine that had bought a car at an auto
auction where this was found to have happened.
That got the FBI on the case. My employee
was allowed to keep his car, but it did cost
several businesses for the mistake, and took
a good while to catch those who had stolen it.

What car history report has the most detailed data on a wreck or salvage?
