My local news has interviewed regional car dealers who consistently report great sales on brand new cars produced by Obama's Muslim / UAW supporters in Detroit. But they also report they are owed hundreds of thousands of dollars for old jalopies that are filling up backlots and vacant cow pastures.

Is this another one of those bailout programs where billions of dollars are being handed out to to intermediates, like bankers, who claim they don't know what happened to the money?

I don't really have an answer for your question, but I wanted to tell you I love your avatar!

I'm glad I wasn't the only one to see the resemblance between Obama and the guy from MAD magazine.

What are the historical connections between Chicago and Memphis?

STRAUSSIAN

Even though those two cities are over 500 miles apart, they've shared quite a few connections over the decades - blues musicians, for example. Memphis BBQ got exported to Chicago early last century. Both cities even street gangs.

What is the basis of this historical connection? When did it start? Why was it Memphis and Chicago, and not Memphis and Detroit, or Chicago and Nashville, or some other pair?

Answer
Chicago Northwestern Rail Road which ran through Memphis and other towns. Ran between Chicago and New Orleans.

The train had Pullman cars and Pullman porters. Pullman porter was one of the few good jobs that a Black man could have in the South.

The Chicago Daily Defender, a active Black newspaper was picked up by the porters in Chicago and distributed throughout the south. Not only gave information and news not available in the south but pushed the civil rights movement.

Chicago became a Mecca for Black musicians especially.
Just before WWII there was a start of a huge migration of rural, many former sharecroppers, Blacks
to Chicago for work after news came via the train about the good life in Chicago, especially in an area called Bronzville on the South side.
The migration lasted through WWII when even more jobs opened up in the far south side and west side manufacturing districts.
With the people came the food, the music and parts of the culture.
