Where can I get info on '88 to '94 Jaguar XJ6?

macvenom@s

I am interested in a late 80's to early 90's Jaguar XJ6. But, I'm confused about the difference between a Vanden Plas & a Sovereign. Is there a base model too? It would be great if you could tell me the differences, or point me to a web site that has this information.

Answer
The different trims the Jaguar XJ6 came in are as follows: XJ6 (base model), Sovereign, and Vanden Plas (most luxurious).

I'm not quite certain of my history anymore, but I believe the Sovereign was only offered for the XJ40 series car, and denoted the larger 3.9 liter straight six engine. For 1988 and 89, the XJ6 base model was saddled with a 2.9 liter inline six that Ford was quick to phase out of production.

The Vanden Plas edition cars were considered to be the highest-end; Vanden Plas is a coachbuilder in England, and the XJ6's that received the VdP treatment featured more luxurious leather interior points and upgraded wood trim (and of course the exterior badging). They also featured the more expensive engine option.

Now for the buying. The 1988 and 1989 XJ6 is the model that broke Jaguar. This particular model had so many recalls when new that it almost single-handedly drove Jaguar out of business. I see quite a few at my shop, and I can say of all of them but one that they are monsterously bad cars. They treat the owners badly.

For an 88 or 89, finding used major parts such as the ABS control module is nearly impossible--much less finding anything new, since Jaguar no longer supports those model years. I will caution you to absolutely stay away from those cars. Be careful to look at the VIN (vehicle identification number)--some 1988-89 XJ6's were altered to look like newer cars by the installation of the later-model square headlamps.

The 1990 and newer XJ6's, however, are a completely different story. We see many more of the 1990-1994 XJ6's at my shop, and I can say that they are vastly superior cars. They treat their owners well, are very reliable and parts availability is much better. They are both mechanically and electrically stronger than the 1988/89 XJ6.

Actually, if I were to recommend a car to you, I would have to direct you to a 1995 or 1997 XJ6. They may be more expensive than an XJ40, but they are mechanically and electrically sound and have a much better electrical system than the one used in the 1988 to 1994 cars. They are incredibly reliable, have a wonderful ride and are relatively inexpensive to fix.

Either way, you'd be making a good choice by buying a later XJ40 (1988-1994 car) or early X300 (1995-1997 car).

An excellent resource is the Jag Lovers website (http://www.jag-lovers.org). They have everything you could ever want to know about the history of Jaguar, can connect you with owners clubs in your area and are an invaluable resource when you need information on mechanical difficulties or simple questions.

Good luck and enjoy your Jaguar!

I'm a new car owner.?

...I mean im going to become one.But i don't know the whole process of buying a car.
And words like:Registration,Title,Insurance etc.,make me more confused. Can anynone explaing everything to me?

Answer
Registration is just a piece of paper that is with the state you are in with the info about the car and info about you on it. This is what allows you to get your license plates.

Insurance is what you have to pay legally on the car. Insurance allows you to pay in small payments all the time based on cars value, your age and driving record. This money isn't like kept in an account but just goes into a general fund. Now when you have an accident the Insurance company pays to have it fixed. Insurance is law cause most accidents are in the thousands of dollars for repair and few people have that kind of money laying around.

Title is the paper on the car, the main sheet. Shows the VIN (vehicle identification number) on it, who you bought it from, who you are, etc. You have a birth certificate...a title is like a cars birth certificate.

Sales tax will be the sales tax you pay on the car when you buy it. Like anything else you buy, gotta pay taxes on it.

If you are this unwise in buying a car, I would take an adult or someone familar with the process with you or a crooked salesman might talk you into items you don't need.
