What degrees can lead to fields in the creation of new energy and other materials?

I have been hearing a lot about how the US needs to break its hold on oil and the need for new sources of energy that are clean and renewable. And after seeing the Iron Man movies and seeing how he creates the new element to power his suit I began wondering what degrees to could lead me to careers in such fields. So does anyone know such degree programs?

That's a great question - and you can get the answer by looking at what the REAL Tony Stark studied in school. :-)
When the director for Iron Man was trying to figure out how to portray Tony Stark in the movie, Robert Downey Jr told him what real 'billionaire genius' he should base that character on.
The guy he talked about did part of his undergrad University studies at an "Ivy League" Canadian school - Queen's University - but then switched to the University of Pennsylvania (because they gave him a scholarship) where he got a bachelorâs degree in economics and a second bachelorâs in physics.
The he enrolled in a doctoral program at Stanford University in California, where he 'planned to concentrate on a Ph.D. in energy physics'. Not sure if he graduated that or quit midway to concentrate on his company (like Bill Gates did when he was in University).
This guy is the real Tony Stark in the business sense, because he has built - or is building - a solar powered city, electric sports cars, and launched a civilian rocket into space, plus other ventures - and even had a cameo in Iron Man 2. :).
