How to look up a VIN number?

christinam

Does anyone know of a website to go to to look up a used car VIN for free? The one I found says it is free but then charges you after you put the number in before it will give you any info.

Answer
You shouldn't even have to go that far. Go to your car and look at the driver's side windshield in the bottom corner. There should be a little silver plate that has your VIN number on it right there between the glass and the dash. If it's not there, or has been scratched off, that's a sign of a possible stolen vehicle. Car lots can't sell a car with no VIN number unless they track it down to make sure it's not stolen.

Another way to check without going online is to check your title, registration, and/or the sales documents if you bought it off the lot.
