Answer
Basically some American manufacturers are attempting to follow the Japanese method of creating and using a "common" chassis which then can be used for several brands of cars. It's more economical to use the same available skeleton and parts to underpin new styles of autos. It's innovatively using the same inventory rather than expensively creating each new car from new manufacturing processes.

That going bust news you hear is about the city of Detroit. The city government. They are not talking about the car industry. The car industry in the US is quite profitable now.

Over 80% of the cars sold in the USA are made in the USA including a lot of Japanese brand vehicles.

Mercedes and BMW build SUVs in the USA too.
