Looking at submitting a press release to local papers for a non-profit organization (library). Do newspapers generally charge for this? Or, because it's for a public service, is it free? I'd call the newspaper, but it's Sunday. Just looking for a general answer and some ballpark figures.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer
No charge. Free.

If you pay for space, that's advertising. With advertising, you know your message will appear as you wrote (and designed) it.

With news releases, there's no assurance that it'll get printed, or that it won't be edited. (Very likely, it will be edited.) And it doesn't matter whether the news release is for a library or for a used car lot or for a restaurant. If it's newsworthy and there's space, it has a chance of getting published. And it's always free.

Hope that helps.

Do I need press releases for my first fiction novel?

I have read a book recently that says purchasing press releases is an important part of the publishing/marketing process. Is this true? If it is, how does anyone ever see it? How exactly does it work to effect marketing? I can't remember hearing about any book that I have read through a press release. Is this important or just BS? Thanks.

Answer
Press releases can be very valuable, especially those sent to local radio/TV and news papers. They can create interviews and get a nice article published about "Local Author" makes good which can spur sales. If yoir name is JK Rowling, the publisher will take car of the press releases.

Now, the bad part. Do not buy this service. You can write your own Press Release. Just Google sample press releases for authors.
