I want to buy a campervan in Germany. I would like to know the specifics involved for a British purchaser regarding obtaining (and maintaining) their equivalent of road tax and MOT. If anyone can advise on a good insurance company, then that info would be appreciated too. The vehicle would leave Germany immediately upon purchase, but will never enter the UK. Many thanks.

The vehicle can only be taxed and registered in Germany if you are a resident in Germany and you are registered in a German town/municipality. If this should be the case you will need to first get a car insurance and provide a statement of insurance for the vehicle registration. You also will need to provide your personal registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) of your place of residence, so that a tax invoice can be sent to you, and your UK passport. In general the company where you buy the vehicle will do the registration process for you if you provide your documents and a power of attorney.

Should you reside in a different country and you want to buy a vehicle in Germany for the purpose of exporting it you will need to get so called tax plates or short-term plates. Those plates show the place of registration, a registration number, and the expiry date of the plate, on which the vehicle must have left Germany. You again would need to get a German vehicle insurance certificate, and would need to pay tax for the validity period (up to three months) of the plates at the time of the registration.

The vehicle must be registered at the vehicle registration office (Kfz-Zulassungsstelle) which covers your place of residence in Germany. These are in general located in all bigger cities that have there own licence-plate letters or at the county/district administration office (Kreisverwaltung, Landratsamt) for smaller municipalities.

How can i Find where my MOT was carried out if iv lost my certificate?

I have lost my mot certificate and need to get a replacement one, as i bought the car recently i dont know where it was tested, i have the VTS number but is there anyway of tracking down the phone number of the testing station from this number?

Answer
A replacement can be obtained from any MOT garage so long as you can produce the V5C logbook or VOSA can supply one for you (please don't call DVLA for MOT info as they have absolutely nothing to do with MOT's and you'll simply waste the price of a phone call).
