Paramedic patient steals ambulance

By ELIZA BARLOW -- Edmonton Sun

An out-of-control patient crawled from the back of a city ambulance into the driver's seat and - with lights and sirens blaring - led police on a high-speed chase early yesterday.

The drama began when paramedics were called to a report of a drug overdose at the Shaw Conference Centre, 9797 Jasper Ave., around 12:35 a.m. on New Year's Day.

EMS spokesman Nikki Booth said the two-paramedic crew got out and assessed the patient - reportedly in his mid-40s - and decided he needed to be transported to hospital.

Booth said the two paramedics were in the back of the ambulance trying to treat the patient when he became "extremely violent and dangerous."

"The individual went from being in the back of the ambulance to climbing into the cabin and taking the ambulance for a joyride with lights and sirens."

The two paramedics were able to get out of the ambulance before the man started his joyride.

Gerry Wiles, president of the paramedics union, said the crew had put cloth restraints on the man, who was acting "bizarre," but he managed to get out of them.

"The crew did the right thing. They feel threatened, they get out - let him have the ambulance."

Once he had control of the vehicle, the patient-turned-suspect took city cops, who were called at 12:53 a.m., on a dangerous northward pursuit.

A police sergeant told the Sun the ambulance was driven "at high speeds, erratically, through tons of red lights" as it neared the northern outskirts of the city.

A cop following in a police car eventually abandoned the chase and called in Air-1, the police helicopter.

Around 195 Avenue and 82 Street near Canadian Forces Base Edmonton, the ambulance went off the road and crashed through a gate. The suspect bailed out into a field.

He was nabbed a short time later by a police dog. His name and charges weren't available yesterday.

Booth said as the ambulance was fleeing north, some motorists apparently thought it was on a legitimate call and got out of the way. She said the ambulance may have been in a minor fender-bender along the way.

As for the two paramedics who were ambulance-jacked, they're somewhat shaken up but are doing OK, said Booth.

"They're seasoned professionals and have seen a lot of stuff, but this is definitely not a situation they thought was going to occur."

Wiles said this isn't the first time a patient has stolen an ambulance. "It happens once or twice a year. But this is probably the furthest it's ever gone - usually it's someone driving it around the block."

Wiles added that ambulances must be open between the front seat and back area so crew members can communicate.
