do cars time to time am no expert but wondering if its worth spending more on the diagnostic gun or if having a android app with the obd 2 plug will give me the same results as the gun

i'm not sure what you mean by gun..
OB2 cable is very useful to read car's ECU and engine light codes..
They come in USB for PC, WiFi dongles, Bluetooth and more
the WiFi and Bluetooth OBD2 dongles will work with Android, look for app called "Torque Pro", it works great and shows real time info, reset and clear codes.
