How long does a car dealership have to pay off your car after they receive the funds to do it?

I guess that is my question. The dealership is going on 3 months now without paying off my car that I sold them as part of my financing. They keep saying they are going to do it, but haven't done it yet due to one reason or another. Any suggestions on how I should go about making it happen?

Answer
Normally they have a 10 day pay off window for the trade which is entered on the finance application. At 3 months you should have already been in touch with someone to get it resolved. If they are not paying the monthly payments it will be on your credit report and possible additional charges.

You could ask to speak to a general manager or dealership owner and see if that makes a difference. Check with the Attorney Generals office and the Better Business Bureau. Perhaps even a local tv station news department.

What type of "car fax" style report provides the most accurate information on a car?

I have heard that some "car fax" type of reports are not that reliable. Is there any recommendations about a good reliable report that I could use for a car? BTW are there any free ones out there too?

Answer
No free vehicle history reports. Of those that are available, Carfax and Autocheck are the most popular. However, neither is completely accurate or complete. They are only as good as the information that is reported to them by dealers, state DMV, and insurance companies. If certain information is not reported, it doesn't show up in the history report.

A recent national TV news program did an undercover investigation and found that Autocheck was more accurate and more complete than Carfax.
