I am supposed to have my new taxi car weighed, and take this information to the California DMV. Why?

I bought a Crown Vic to drive for the taxi company, and it's being repainted into a taxi as we speak. The boss told me to have it weighed, then take this info to the California DMV. What am I getting at the DMV? A license or certificate of some kind?
Thank you, help is greatly appreciated.

Answer
Because your crown vic is now a commercial vehicle and will be issued commercial plates. As such it falls under different laws.

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/commercial/cvra.htm is the page.

All commercial motor vehicle owners/lessees must declare the gross operating weight when:

â¢The vehicle is first registered.
â¢The vehicle is purchased (new or used).
â¢The operating weight changes. If the operating weight increases, complete a Declaration of Gross Vehicle Weight/Combined Gross Vehicle Weight form (REG 4008). Additional CVRA fees will be collected for the remainder of the registration year or partial registration year (PYR) period. If the operating weight decreases, the lower weight will be added to the vehicle record and a new registration card will be issued. Refunds are not issued when the operating weight decreases.

Answer
Not without following certain procedures.

You have the title = it is your car.

The car is on his property = neither you, nor your agent (the tow truck driver) can legally go onto his property against his will, that is trespassing. (Tow truck operators are generally familiar with doing discrete repossessions. Call around and you should be able to find one who is willing to recover the car if it is an easy grab - trespassing requires that the property owner order you off the property - if they are not aware, and it is not posted, it is not technically trespassing - once it is off the property, it is a done deal).

If you want to sue for damages, you will need to go to Small Claims Court.

If you would rather get your car back, without a tow truck "grab", the legalities call for you to file a "Complaint for Summary Proceeding to Recover Personal Propertyâ in the District Court. A hearing can be held as soon as seven days after the complaint has been served on the person who is holding your property. If you win (a no-brainer here), the judge will order that your property be returned.

See linked page below (it is specific to Maine but basically should apply to your state as well - to be more specific look this up on your own state/county website) for more info. (notice to "defendant" and procedure to pick car up).
