How to become a Car Designer?

Chris

Hey guys, im currently a senior in High school and im graduating in 2 months. for now i'm just goingto go to my local community college, but i have a passion for designing cars. i wanted to know if anyone know what it takes to become an automotive body designer. im a pretty good artist and i constantly draw cars. the field i want to specialize in isn't very common and i can't find any info on what i have to do to become a auto. designer. i cant figure out what i have to major in, what schools i should go to, etc. i live in california so if anyone knows of any schools that can help me out please tell me. thanks again!

Answer
You'd need an engineering degree to be an automotive designer and there are degree programs specifically geared toward that field. You're smart to go to community college before transferring to a four-year school, since you'll save a fortune and still graduate with the same degree as everyone who spent four years (and many thousands of dollars more) at the university. Here's a link with information about programs for auto designers, some of which are in California:

My best advice to you is to set an appointment with somebody who is in charge of automotive design at a car company you would like to work for, and talk with them directly to find out what you need to know to get a career started. If you do get a job working in automotive design someday, keep in ming that retro styled autos sell very well here in america. For example the 05-current Mustang, and the new Camaro & Dodge Challenger. I also would love to see Cadillac bring back tail fins and lots of chrome & character back to their cars, instead of the boring cookie cutter cars that they have now.
