Petrified of flying.?

becca

Please help. I am going down to GA to see my son graduate from the Army and I am petrified and I mean petrified of flying. I cannot drive. Any suggestions on helping me thru this. Thank you.

Answer
Becca, you may rest assured that despite what you may hear, flying remains the absolute safest form of transportation. Be glad you don't have to drive! If you drove, you'd have all that fuss of finding gas, making sure you're on the right route, finding someplace to park the car in an unfamiliar place, etc. By taking the plane, someone else deals with all those bothersome details. You just sit back and relax. Hundreds of thousands of people fly EVERY DAY. True, you occasionally hear of an air travel mishap, but they are the exceptions. No newspaper or TV news crew is interested in the thousands of flights that take off and land daily without any incident whatsoever.

Since being aloft in a modern aircraft makes you nervous, when you book your reservations, request a seat away from the windows. If it is a large, two-aisle plane, ask to sit in the center section. Otherwise, request seats on the aisle. Don't bother looking out the windows; keep yourself distracted by packing a good book to read, or watching the entertainment on the video screen (if your seat has one). Bring a personal stereo (such as an iPod) to play music you enjoy. It will be almost like being on a bus, but larger, with a smoother ride and friendlier onboard crew and co-passengers.

Also, do not hesitate to let the ground and/or cabin crew know you are apprehensive about flying. They are trained to make your journey as comfortable as they can, and will gladly offer assistance.

Finally, consult with your doctor. he or she might be able to offer you a mild sedative to take right before your flight. There's nothing like a nice nap to make you feel refreshed at your destination in Georgia, ready to greet your son on this very important milestone in his life. Have a great trip!

PS: Please thank your son for me for his service to our country.

A new era is arriving! Will we all be traveling in flying cars in 2014?
