I want to sell my car! What do I do in the UK?

C h e e z

I've done my MOT testing but I have no clue on what should be done in the UK? Ownership transfer? Test driving with a potential buyer? How to research the selling price? DVLA regulations? Please help! Thanks!

Answer
To sell the car privately, please see my earlier answer on this subject; http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Ahkj3CDG1MTDZRi6n_Zv2H7sy6IX?qid=20061127083616AAGSdVS&show=7#profile-info-4a58acbf599956ee8785f20b34678fbeaa

First you neet to research the competition. Buy an autotrader or go to www.autotrader.co.uk, and look at what prices cars like yours are going for. Then decide on your price eg. go cheaper if you want to sell quickly etc. I would try selling it through the autotrader. You can do this online, or just phone them up and they will send a rep round with a camera and take your order, including helping you with the wording.

Depending on the price point of your car and whether you decide to sell privately, make sure the servicing is up to date and the tyres are in good nick, and spend some money having it thoroughly valeted.

Not knowing how expensive your car is... if it is under £1k then I would try the local paper, motoring section or eBay. Either way Autotrader is a good place to start for selling privately.

If you do not want the hassle then go to a garage and see if they want to buy it from you. Pick a garage that specialises in your type of car. So if you have a VW Golf for example, find a used car garage that specialises in these cars. You are more likely to get a fairer price and they are more likely to want to buy it. It will be less that what you would get privately but it is hassle free.

I would say that now is a bad time to be selling a car. If you can wait until the new year then I would.

Steps to registering a car back to its old UK plates.?

Matt

Does anyone know what the steps are to get a British car that is on foreign plates back to it's old UK plates?

Thanks in advance
If I can't get my old plates back, would it go on a Q plate?

Answer
Go to the dvla website for the info - as said
I don't think you will be given the original registration, it may have been reallocated, you could ask but you would have to pay extra, I think its nearer £100 to re-register .
